Having to pay around $15 mil a year to keep him seems like a horrible idea.

Where did this rumor come from that we have to pay Green 15 a year?  Is that a Hollinger prediction?  He has been notoriously off on these kinds of predictions, and I would not take it seriously.  I don't see any chance Green gets extended for more than the MLE unless he explodes this year.

Certainly a bit tempting
I know I hope he gets traded during the draft. I only see 2 scenarios if he makes to the end of the season: 1) we sign him to a bad, negative value contract 2) he walks for nothing

I've seen that number thrown around here a few times. Not sure where exactly that came from

For a team as asset and talent deprived as the Mavs, I can't think it makes sense to move up in the draft unless you are sure you are getting a major game changer.  I don't see it.

Anyone want to give last minute Mavs predictions for tonight?

What do they do?

1. Stay put at 10 and draft a player
2. Trade down from 10 and get a later pick/players
3. Trade 10 for a veteran or Salary dump and no 2023 picks coming back
4. Trade up!!

I'm feeling Utah right now.  #16, 2024 first rounder from their stash and Olynyk for 10 and Bertans.  They keep the deal open into next week so we can aggregate Olynyk with other players (like Reggie/THJ/McGee) in deals for someone else.  The 2024 pick might help in that regard.  Ultimately 10 turns into 16 and the trade target next week.

And for a team that needs as many wing defenders to cover Luka and Kyrie as possible.

The one time I really paid heed to what someone said after a draft was when Nellie said after the '98 draft, "This (Nowitzki) is a major, major piece for us." Pretty strong words for a 9th pick. And of course he was right.

They totally missed on "Tractor" Traylor.

I’m liking this move just like that(have liked a version of this for months). This is the right move if we don’t think we can get a veteran big/wing for 28. It buys us some time to be opportunistic this summer(2024 FRP) while offloading salary(Bertans). At worst we get a serviceable backup big in Olynyk. And we still get a high quality player at 16. It really checks a lot of boxes

Yeah good point.  I probably made a point with holes in it.  I certainly wouldn’t expect Lively to be a heavy end of game finisher often in big games early.

So Cato is saying Whitmore is the one with the bad medical. So basically no chance we get Walker or Hendricks, if Whitmore is not in the top 9 anymore. Ugh.

Wessarman (not sure if I spell it right) said it that it is about old injuries in high school,  but it didn't show in college

Gradey Dick is going to be a star. Dick and Jaquez are both NBA ready. If we’re picking 15 or 16 I’d be happy with either

RE: 2023 DRAFT: June 22 | Mavs to pick 10th - ThisIStheYear - 06-22-2023

Excited about tonight. My final thoughts on at least what I would do. Leonard Miller is the player to get out of this draft that balances value at his draft position and potential. IMO, he’s this year’s Giannis, SGA, Bam, Hardy, etc. (and no, I’m not saying he’s as good as most of those guys, he’s just incredibly undervalued). He has great length and athleticism, point forward skills, and at the end of the year was the best player in the GLeague, which is better than the NCAA. The Mavs also need to add a second player with some potential and shed salary. So, what would I do?

1) draft Coulibaly at 10. Pops and Wemby reportedly covet him. And, the Spurs should have the assets to move to about 20 in the draft to position for Miller.
2) if the Spurs fail in their effort to get that pick, then you have Coulibaly, who will be an excellent prospect with uber elite athletic traits and measurables and promising skills, except that he’s very bad on pull ups and floaters. He’ll probably be good.
3) if the Spurs are successful, trade Coulibaly, Bertans, and McGee for Miller and Charles Bassey. Best I can tell, Bassey is the only worthwhile prospect on the current Spurs roster (based on the advanced stats), if he can stay healthy, and is a needed big. I’d also want something like a future protected first or a couple of twos. The trade works in the Trade Machine and allows Dallas to just outright dump a large amount of useless salary.
4) maybe that’s enough money shed to give Dallas a full MLE - I don’t know the calculations, but hopefully it would put the Mavs in striking distance with another move.
5) sign a pretty good player in free agency with the MLE. Someone will be available for less than they should be because so few teams have cap space.

I really don’t think any other trading partner could absorb enough salary to help make this happen except San Antonio. They’re our brothers. They help us win now, we help them win later. Square deal.

[Wojnarowski] Charlotte Hornets remain steadfast with Brandon Miller as the #2 overall pick.

I dont think either of those two were going to drop anyway. I’d be happy to take Whitmore at 10
