RE: DRAFT: Nov 18 (In-Person Workouts: Oct 16 - Nov 16) | Mavs get #18 & #31 - KillerLeft - 10-20-2020

More from that Supes guy with the Atlanta front office friend. Some notes about the draft included:

"Update:

We had a long convo this morning but more was about non-sports than anything but anyway, here is what he shared.

Corp is considering 70 games, season ends in June with 4-5 games a week. They get their July and August back to the players.

Obviously they can't do a bubble but with so many events canceled, arena availability is extremely high but travel is the challenge.

They are considering a preseason which starts on Christmas and a start of the regular season on MLK day. They are also considering wiping the preseason and starting on MLK day altogether.

I couldn't share the rest but it's a lot of games. Depth will matter A LOT.
We talked about teams in the draft:

Nothing changed on MIN front, he said they are still pushing the PG idea. I want him confirm that this is done from LAC but he said it isn't but LAC is shopping around different moves to see what are their options. They are looking at a number of different things to do to become a contender and keep Kawhi who has made it clear, he wants to win a ring or have the contending team which he felt they didn't have last year.

He confirmed Chicago interest in Ball and several others but said that Chicago willingness to move up is a lot less higher than that's being stated. Protections on any 2021 1st is seen as key and many don't want to even send top 10 protections, strictly lottery. It's been tough, this might be the least valuable year #1 pick wise since the A. Bennett draft.

He said MIN wants to move down but their target if they do is Obi Toppin. I asked could Obi go one and he said possibly. This would suck for the Hawks in my opinion.

Atlanta hasn't shown a great deal of interest in moving out of 6 but they have been very active in asset hunting. There is a feeling, they will not be able to spend a lot of their cap depending on what it becomes due to the market. They will be looking for trades. He said, we are looking for minor to BLOCKBUSTER deals. Stated we are one of the buyers for more picks in this draft.

He said the Knicks are looking at moving up to 5 again and that they are looking to move back as well. Knicks are looking at their options. He was told, NY doesn't want to move 27, that could make moving up to 5 impossible as they aren't interested in moving future 1sts. Frank or Kevin doesn't have 3 spot value even in this type of draft.

Phoenix has talked to Golden State, Cleveland and Atlanta about moving up. Likely for Obi Toppin. MIN asking price is too high I was told.

Obi Toppin is becoming the #1 player on the board in terms of interest. As more time as past, teams are realizing what I already knew, he's the most projectable and ready player in this draft with all star upside. The easiest player to pick in this draft where everyone has 21 questions. I don't know if we can get him at #6 as I hoped."

He also said that Jrue Holiday's trade cost was "a lot higher" than CP3's which I thought was interesting.

Yeah, I'm pretty convinced he's got a guy on the inside at the Hawks, and that he's accurately relaying information on that board. It's important to understand that it's still all just speculation, but I'm convinced it's more informed speculation than what we normally get. We'll see.

Neither is going to sit there like Dipo and expect the max whether they deserve it or not (you need to make it clear to them that the Parsons/Wes/Barnes days are over). I will say that I'm starting to get a little bit of cold feet on Schroder given comments made today on the board that made some sense.

Oladipo is going to make 21mio next year. Porter 28.5mio. If Porter has his usual prime Wizards season he won´t sign for less. Oladipos max will be in the 35-37mio range. Oladipo has at least shown that he can be a max level player. Porter has basically always been what Oladipo was in Orlando. A high level role player.
Same for Schröder. He had one good season. That´s not enough to give Oladipo the benefit of the doubt but in Schröders case it is enough for a big contract? Why exactly is Schröder a better fit? Because he has one season with above average shooting numbers? Oladipo is a better spot up shooter and prior to his injury he also was a better defender.

I get that some people prefer a build through the draft approach but I really don´t get the inconsistent takes on potential trade targets or free agents. Fact is that all three have expiring contracts. They also have some undeniable flaws. That´s the reason why they might be available in the first place.

Again...the inconsistency. And Oladipo won´t? No one will offer Oladipo a max contract if he cannot get back to his Pacers level.

Your beef isn't with me on Oladipo. I agree that he will find it hard to get a team to offer him a max contract in 21. If there is one or two, he won't like the team offering it.

Don´t think I am beefing with anyone and I also don´t see Oladipo as the best option this year. I just don´t understand why we aren´t using the same standards for players in a comparable situation.

But seriously, there are like 10 guys that could go number one in this draft....yet not a single one is probably worthy of even being Top 5 in a normal draft.

This draft is SO weak at the top compared to normal....but VERY deep into the 2nd round. The stars from this draft are going to come from all over it, not collected at the top like usual. This is a draft for finding role players....not stars (though some will certainly arise).

Most mocks have him as a mid/late 2nd round pick. Indicating that the Mavs are going to trade down?

RE: DRAFT: Nov 18 (In-Person Workouts: Oct 16 - Nov 16) | Mavs get #18 & #31 - Kammrath - 10-21-2020

I actually REALLY like Quickley as far as guard fits for the Mavs. He was the go to defender for UK over Maxey. Is longer than Maxey and shot the three WAY better. I think the only reason people like Maxey over him is that Quickley likely has a ceiling as a 3&D guard whereas Maxey theoretically could become more of a "star."

Wouldn't surprise me, especially in this draft where I think the guys from the late lottery on aren't much different than the guys in the 50s.

For instance I would just assume take Quickley or Ty-Shon Alexander in the mid 2nd than take Maxey at 18. I don't see much difference.

There are only a couple guys I really think are unique and worth targeting real specifically, e.g. I have become real high on Hampton or Achiuwa and their potential at #18 and Tyler Bey at #31 or before. I just really think there is no one comparable to those guys that the Mavs could get in their range and so I would REALLY focus on them if I were DAL. Even other guys I really like feel like they have comparable options, like Maledon, Bolmaro, and N'Doye as far as international picks.

RE: DRAFT: Nov 18 (In-Person Workouts: Oct 16 - Nov 16) | Mavs get #18 & #31 - Kammrath - 10-21-2020

My updated Mavs-centric board (meaning I am listing the guys I think are a good fit in the organization and possible to get in the right situation).

I have 7 guys I am grading as first rounders for the Mavs to try to get and then I have 7 guys I am grading for the 2nd round at the moment.

Trade-up Targets

1) Devin Vassell -- 6'7" | 6'10" wingspan
  • is the exact wing defender the Mavs need in the starting lineup with a great three ball
  • elite in catch and shoot (1.22 PPP) and transition (1.41 PPP)
  • great on-ball defender (0.50 PPP)

2) Tyrese Haliburton -- 6'5" | 6'7.5" wingspan
  • fits offensively with great potential to be 3rd banana/2nd creator and great defender
  • elite in spot up (1.43 PPP) and catch and shoot (1.49 PPP)
  • great on-ball defender (0.50 PPP)
[Image: tyrese-haliburton-shot-chart-1024x798.jpg]

Draft at #18 Targets

3) R.J. Hampton -- 6'5" | 6'7" wingspan
  • if his shooting improvement is legit...TAKE all day, one of the highest ceilings in the draft
  • probably the fastest player in the draft
  • can get to the rim at will (but needs to improve finishing a lot)
4) Precious Achiuwa -- 6'9" | 7'1.5" wingspan
  • all the athletic tools and with the right development has the potential to be the exact kind of big the Mavs need
  • good on-ball defender (0.61 PPP)
[Image: precious-achiuwa-shot-chart-1024x799.jpg]

5) Saddiq Bey -- 6'8" | 6'10" wingspan
  • great 3&D player, but his lack of athleticism, explosiveness, and lateral quickness is concerning
  • elite in transition (1.39 PPP) and in spot up (1.31 PPP) and great in pick and roll (0.94 PPP)
  • great one-on-one defender (0.56 PPP)

6) Aaron Nesmith -- 6'6" | 6'10" wingspan
  • his shooting numbers are just insane and he shows enough potential as a defender to intrigue me
  • elite at spot up (1.23 PPP), catch and shoot (1.64 PPP), and off screens (0.93 PPP) and good off dribble (0.92 PPP)
  • solid defender one-on-one (0.71)

Trade for/Buy #26 Targets

7) Tyler Bey -- 6'7" | 7'1" wingspan
  • great and athletic big wing prospect who can be a small ball big as well, the kind of versatile player that can bring team defense together (would honestly take him at #18 if others aren't there)
  • great around the rim (1.33 PPP) and good at spot up (1.02 PPP) and elite mid-range jump shot (1.14 PPP)
  • solid post defender (0.82 PPP) and great one-on-one (0.48 PPP)

Draft at #31 (or another 2nd round pick) Targets (in no particular order)

Immanuel Quickley -- 6'4" | 6'10" wingspan
  • great at spot up (1.08 PPP), pick and roll (0.91), and with the floater (0.94 PPP) and elite off the dribble (1.38 PPP)
  • great one-on-one defender (0.48 PPP)
[Image: immanuel-quickley-shot-chart-1024x800.jpg]

Ty-Shon Alexander -- 6'4" | 6'8" wingspan
  • 40% three point shooter who is better off-ball
  • elite overall defender (opponents shot 30.3%, 0.62 PPP)

Theo Maledon -- 6'4" | 6'8.5" wingspan
  • good at the rim (1.23 PPP), at spot up (1.0 PPP), and pick and roll (0.87 PPP)
  • promising defender with potential for growth

Robert Woodard II -- 6'7" | 7'1" wingspan
  • great around the rim (1.29 PPP) and at good catch and shoot (1.08 PPP)
  • good one-on-one defender (0.62 PPP)

Leandro Bolmaro -- 6'7" | 6'8" wingspan
  • unselfish player who can facilitate when needed
  • shot shows promise but needs lots of work
  • great, hard nosed, and competitive defender

Abdoulaye N'Doye -- 6'7" | 7'2.5" wingspan
  • elite catch and shoot (1.63 PPP) and around the rim (1.45 PPP)
  • good defender with versatility, even a solid defender in the post (0.82 PPP)

[Image: abdoulaye-ndoye-shot-chart-1024x799.jpg]

Paul Reed -- 6'9" | 7'2" wingspan
  • great around the rim (1.29 PPP)
  • good post defender (0.78 PPP) and one-on-one (0.55 PPP)

RE: DRAFT: Nov 18 (In-Person Workouts: Oct 16 - Nov 16) | Mavs get #18 & #31 - Mavs2019 - 10-21-2020

Based on the shot charts you want Vassell, Haliburton, Saddiq Bey and Woodward II. First two out of reach, but the last two could be available at #18 and #31 respectively. Also seems to confirm that Achiuwa is not that good finishing around the rim for his projected role.
