I think they’ll be a little better than you think on most nights when Ayton is locked in. Keeping him locked in will be a problem though. Reddick has a challenge. Not only does he have to balance Lebrons ego, but he also has to not step on Ayton’s toes. Him and Monty used to get into it all the time and it was difficult keeping his motor up. When that motor is high though, he’s a fantastic player. But I fear if JJ and Ayton clash the divide will be too big to overcome within the season. I appreciated the video highlighting Ayton’s strengths and weaknesses. Not a physical player at all. Only one FT attempt per game?!? But a nice touch with hook shots, mid-range jumpers. Can Luka turn him into a rim-roller? If not, can they effectively use his skills? Below-average defender should blend seamlessly with Doncic and Reaves. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - Smitty - 07-03-2025 @Gambo987 I don't know if they trade him never said one way or the other. Just mentioned what I was told plain and simple and those who know me understand this info only comes from really good sources. Lebron and Reaves don't like playing with him (LUKA) and that LA would love to move on from Lebron if they can. No idea if he gets traded or bought out but time will tell. This is just wild to me. I thought LeBron loved Luka's game. Don't care about the Reaves part. BUT the Lakers would "love to move on from LeBron" is also kinda crazy... Love him or hate him, he made the Lakers relevant again after a long drought. Won a title... Now they would love to move on from him? RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - SleepingHero - 07-03-2025 Cam Whitmore has been linked to the Lakers in a potential sign-and-trade for Dorian Finney-Smith, per @AnthonyIrwinLA “Another name league sources have linked to the Lakers: Cam Whitmore. If Houston decides to shed a little salary or if they expand the Kevin Durant trade to include their acquisition of Dorian Finney-Smith, Whitmore – who is looking for a larger role than he’d have on that loaded Rockets roster – is considered a candidate to be moved.” RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - DallasMaverick - 07-03-2025 (07-03-2025, 12:09 PM)Smitty Wrote: @Gambo987 I remember the year that Luka and Dirk played together. Dirk was on his last legs, but I distinctly remember feeling disappointed that Luka didn’t get him the ball more often. Luka was amazing, but he didn’t maximize what was left of Dirk’s ability. Maybe the LA players feel the same way. You can easily find many reports saying how LeBron loves playing with Luka. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - KillerLeft - 07-03-2025 (07-03-2025, 12:09 PM)Smitty Wrote: @Gambo987 It's probably being overblown, but I have exactly zero trouble believing the two ball-handlers for LA prior to the Luka trade are less than thrilled with their new roles after acquiring him. We've talked a ton around here about how difficult it is to get into rhythm on offense with one guy monopolizing the ball for 20 seconds of every 24-second shot clock. Personally, I'm happy the Mavs are out from under that style of play (though I wish they had a little more skill with the ball to replace Luka). RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - SleepingHero - 07-03-2025 (07-03-2025, 12:09 PM)Smitty Wrote: @Gambo987 It’s genuinely insane to me how Lebron and Reaves were gifted the most talented player under 26 in the NBA and top 3 in the league and they are still finding ways to complain. Luka does require some intricacies more than others but what star doesn’t? One of them is that he requires a lot of effort from all of his other teammates. Lebron and Reaves don’t have that effort. But the biggest takeaway for me might be that this is pretty damaging to Luka and there's no way LeBron is back with the Lakers this season with this getting out there. But it is your choice to believe this version... Or you can choose to believe this version, for example. Austin Reaves' Agent's STRONG Response To Claim He Doesn't Like Playing With Luka Doncic It was long clear that LeBron can't carry Lakers offense anymore. That he prefers the secondary, less taxing role. That was clear from day one. It was also very obvious LeBron looked like a much better player once Luka started playing. Well...I for one DON'T think this latest round of LeBron drama is just a media creation. I think he (LeBron) really wants...something. Not sure if it's a trade, a buyout, or just for the Lakers to continue catering to him and not Luka during his last year or two. But, I don't think it's all a big nothing, as has been suggested. At the end of the day though, I'm not sure it will amount to anything. Nobody is going to trade for him, as we've discussed ad nauseam. I've wondered if his goal is to force a buyout, but I'm not sure. Any of the three would be amazing fits here, and I don't mean to continue the bit - I'm dead serious. Actually, I've lost track of KCP. Not sure he's still the player he once was, but the other two would help FOR SURE. Monk is being actively shopped as we type today. But, I don't think it's all a big nothing, as has been suggested. Of course it is possible that LeBron's ego is hurt, because Lakers put Luka as their future, which is of course the only logical thing to do, not much future around a 40 year old. He might be hurt a new 1+1 offer was not on his table, as Lakers are moving on. However, I don't think he could find a franchise that would be willing to trade for him, cater to his every need and wish and make him a center of their team while making a true contending push. So the logical result would be, that he will get his attention and a month or two of media highlights about him and his future, before he will publicly acknowledge what a great team Lakers have build and how he is excited to give it another go for a title with this great team. The other possibility is, that the media is just overblowing things. Rich Paul did publicly say that they are not looking for a trade. That they just want Lakers to be competitive (as all Lakers fans want too). Nothing wrong with a little push for a FO. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - Winter - 07-03-2025 Can you imagine JJ Reddick trying to sleep at night? You have to think about pleasing these guys every night. Luka, LeBron, Ayton, Whitmore. You'd probably love Reaves when he's stacked up against all these other players who are complaining about something. You'd probably forget completely that you have LaRiva. Yeah, it's kind of all a mess. What strikes me is how hopeless their situation is. They have Luka, yes, and we think that's likely to make the next era easy to reach, but he's already going to be 27, and LA is basically right where Dallas was when he was younger. He/they are faced with almost starting over, and with one of the worst front offices in all of sports, right after a big sale where ownership cashed in (providing a glimpse of what the Buss family has been focused on, recently). I think the new ownership group has been very good for the Dodgers, but I doubt they'll be able to affect too much positive change until Pelinka is removed, and meanwhile, the clock on Luka's career is ticking away. Honestly, I'm growing less and less interested in the Lakers as each day passes. When the deal went down I had nightmares of watching Luka succeed in a different team's uniform (at the expense of my team, fairly often) and while I'm sure he'll have some good games against Dallas, I mostly just feel sorry for him now because I don't think LA will be a team of any consequence for quite some time. I'm starting to wonder if it might be prudent for Luka to jump to either Denver or Miami when he gets the chance. There a greater than 0 chance that Luka doesn't even reup with them. Yes, they can pay him more than any other team, but not by much since the supermax is off the table. If he sees a better opportunity in Brooklyn (random example, and I don't know why anyone would do this) or wants to team up somewhere with Giannis he could theoretically decline his PO next season and just walk. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - KillerLeft - 07-03-2025 The reason this LeBron thing won't go away is that he opted in, rather than out to sign his customary 1+1. Reading the tea leaves there: We can reasonably assume he did so because they, the Lakers, were not offering the 1+1. I suppose it's possible that he did so because he's already determined that this is his last season, but knowing what we know about him, and based on last week's Rich Paul kerfuffle, I don't think so. From there, we can basically assume that this WILL be LeBron's last year in a Lakers uniform, whether he retires or not. If he decides this is his last season, that's probably only mildly annoying to him because he loses a little bit of face in that it's rather obvious that he's not the only one making the decision on when/if he exits the Lakers, but it's still probably best for him to retire a Laker hero, setting up and continuing whatever it is he's got going out there in LA for after basketball (the reasons he went there in the first place, really). But, if he decides he wants to play another season after this one, or maybe even two more...that's where it gets interesting. If he is going to retire wearing a different jersey, he's going to want to get there as soon as possible, imo, while he's still "LeBron James" on the court. However, it IS a big leap to assume the Lakers will buy him out, just as a thank you. It wouldn't be shocking, really, but they'd really, really have to want to be perceived as the good guys in the situation. There really wouldn't be anything else "in it for them," other than maybe just getting the circus that has been the LeBron James Lakers era behind them. And make no mistake, they are in for a circus of a season if he's a Laker this year. End of day, I think he's a Laker for one more season and then retires. But part of me thinks his competitive nature will push back against the idea that they, not he, get to decide when he's done. After the Luka trade and MIL stretch-waiving Dame, I don't think anything happening in the NBA will ever shock me again.
