Things haven't changed. They knew this season was going to be a huge loss going into Orlando. And the hope still remains that they'll have fans at games next year. The season being started in January gives that a chance (although it might not be right away). I'm curious how they negotiate the uncertainty this offseason...But I think they get it done. I 100% think they smooth the cap for the next 4-5 years and leave it fairly flat. But that keeps players from getting hammered the next 2-3 and a repeat of the Warriors down the line. Teams are still upset about the one year cap jump allowing them to create a superteam. Even if you are right and the cap shrinks big, I think the last thing the Mavs should do is go and blow all their money and get trapped in a mediocre roster for the next few years. That's the exact thing that most of these teams that had their star walk did. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart - cow - 10-06-2020 I guess Jones Jr is an interesting prospect that could be another Luka lob threat but he's getting no run from the Heat in the playoffs so color me worried. I am not interested in him unless he comes really cheap. I would rather try some of the wings in this draft over him. Check out the player boycott thread. Viewership down 70%. That said, as you said, conservative spending this offseason might be a wise course of action... RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart - cjeter24 - 10-06-2020 I don't get the hate on Buddy's contract. Your shooting guys consistently get in the 15-20 mill range. And Buddy is elite in that skillset. Next year at 24 mill is a bit expensive. But 22, 20 and 18 the next few years is perfectly reasonable. And by the end of the deal, it's a big time bargain if the cap is on the rise again. Buddy is a much better offensive version of THJ. They both are similarly great spot up shooters. But THJ is in the 30th percentile shooting off screens compared to the near 80th percentile for buddy. If you like THJ fit here long term, Buddy is an even better fit and you are likely going to have to pay THJ handsomely as well if he repeats his season. If you'd say you just want to get rid of THJ type guy completely, I can buy that too. I personally loved the way the offense looked with shooters all around Luka. I think getting an elite shooter is a big time upgrade for the offensive potential. Yes it is a concern... And I do think it's somewhat related to the protests. It's also due to basically every sport ever having major prime time coverage right now. Ratings are going to go down when people have other stuff to watch. Additionally they've been in decline for a bit anyways. Cord cutting has been a huge issue and that's just accelerated with a recession. Ratings are a concern moving forward but it's not yet going to have major financial implications for any of the leagues. I'd also thing a large portion of people tuned out on some of the sports like NBA and MLB because of the drastic changes to the schedule, etc. You are already having people say a Lebron championship in the bubble doesn't really count. Your old guys are purists. I think post election and post covid things are going to return to normalcy sometime next year (assuming progress on virus) RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart - Mavs2019 - 10-06-2020 Scott41theMavs (10-06-2020, 11:06 PM)cjeter24 Wrote:(10-06-2020, 11:00 PM)Scott41theMavs Wrote:(10-06-2020, 10:53 PM)Tyler Wrote:(10-06-2020, 10:27 PM)Scott41theMavs Wrote: Considering that the salary cap is going to go down precipitously, Plan Powder seems even dumber, as would players thinking they'll get paid more in '21. The cap will likely remain the same for the next two seasons as they try to avoid another big yo-yo-effect. In exchange the owners are trying to re-negotiate the percentage split. That´s where we are at. That being said I wouldn´t want to be the first fool to hand out a contract right now. Imagine you pay Grant 72/4 and then guys like Saric, Gallinari, Bogdanovic, Harrell, Harris all sign short-term MLE deals. Viewership being down 70%. I hope they do it for the right reasons (aka not BLM) namely that all the featured stars are either robots, unlikeable dicks or portrayed that way: LeBron, Davis, Harden, Butler, Kawhi, PG13, Westbrook. Yeah. I am not watching the Finals because I do not like Lebron and do not have any interest in watching him for 2.5 hours of my life. I would rather spend my life elsewhere. He is just completely uninteresting to me and completely overrated. I get not liking Lebron's personality but this is a weird bit. At 35 years old, he's coasting to a NBA title with AD and a bunch of rejects. Averaging 28/11/9 and shooting 54% from the floor. Even playing much better defense after everyone thought he couldnt two years ago. If anything, Lebron is one of the most underrated superstars in NBA history. I don't hope we pay THJ near 24 millions. We raged about him getting less than Buddys "bargain". As far as fit in the playing style goes I like what I saw from THJ. He wasn't afraid to pull the trigger. That's what you will probably get from Buddy too. Buddy adds some motor on the offence and less trying on the defence. THJ also is a stable for our locker room, a real pro. You won't get this from Buddy. In the end you gamble about Buddy being a good enough 3rd player or THJ keeping up his play. I would say most of the fans of the teams he is not playing for actually hate him. I don't think that was the case with, for example, Jordan. Anyone who watched Jordan would say Bron isn't anywhere close. Lebron is really good. I dislike him for a multitude of reasons, but he's definitely proven he's in the top tier of the NBA pyramid. Not Jordan, but thats okay. He's Lebron. Just like Magic is Magic. Bird is Bird. Kareem, Wilt, Russell, etc. All these dudes are legends. Jordan is to me the undisputed GOAT and it's not really close. If Lebron won more in the finals, and didn't become a mercenary for hire going from loaded superstar team to loaded superstar team he'd be higher on my personal list. I would hold a lottery tournament with all 30 teams simultaniously to the real NBA play-offs. I´d let the non-play-off teams compete with the G-League affiliates from the play-off teams. There is no relegation in the NBA for being an utter failure at your job, but losing a top 5 or top 10 pick, because your NBA team got upset by a well-drilled G-League team in a five game series would finally be a way to punish bad coaching, bad management and bad players. Could you imagine the Knicks fans thinking they get the next LeBron with the #1 pick and then they get upset by the Maine Red Claws, because DSJ shot 22% from the field and had 5 TOs per game. The stakes are higher than in the real play-offs. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart - StepBackJay - 10-07-2020 I would have for sure watched the playoffs, this is the first year I haven't watched much of the playoffs in a long time. The protests and lectures from millionaires is just too much to take. Having protest messages on your jerseys and boycotting your own games and all that is just too much for a lot of people. I don't disagree that cord-cutting and other factors are also to blame. NFL ratings are also down and they are waaaaayyyy less into lectures and protests than the NBA. RE: OFFSEASON: Mavs Trade & Free Agency (Nov 20?) + Salary Chart - Hypermav - 10-07-2020 If the Mavs were in finals, well of course I would watch. Heat and Lakers bleh. In a normal year, that would probably be a no go. After all, we are not a collective of lemming thought. If the NBA feels the need to get woke and go broke while supporting China and their human rights violations, by all means make that argument and see how it works out.
