Klay frustrated after the Rockets loss.

Never thought I'd agree verbatim with Redditors. He doesn't fit this roster.

What an interesting and depressing thought exercise.  Even if they still did the Luka deal, Grimes instead of Klay and DJJ instead of Naji would feel much better than where we stand currently.

RE: MAVS NEWS: - SleepingHero - 11-04-2025

This team is very bad.

Extremely bad.

I've watched a lot of basketball over my years and this team is approaching the status of worst of all time. Ridiculous given the talent they have on this roster, but.... the the vibes are just all off. I cannot tell you from exactly what is the main cause, but you can feel it.

There is no offensive identity. There is no flow. There is absolutely nothing from possession to possession that makes me believe that any of the 5 players is comfortable being out there. It shows. The Mavs are 30th in the NBA this season in basically every offensive metric. They currently have a 103.4 ORTG, which is behind other offensive powerhouses like the Washington Wizards and New Orleans Pelicans. But relative to the league they are about 12 points behind league average. That is the lowest in franchise history. Not even the teams in the 90s had such a bad offense relative to league average.

Its such a glaring issue that its insurmountable. And one can argue missing AD for 3 out of the 7 games hasn't helped (i don't count the one where he never returned) and could be skewing the numbers, but the teams' offensive rating with AD on the court hasn't changed. Its a systemic issue. In fact, the only player that has a marked difference thus far vs. being on the court vs. off has been DLo. Which I don't think its a testament to DLo, but rather to how piss poor this offense is that even a guy shooting sub 40% can make them look better.

Further, Cooper Flagg has disappointed me a bit. The talent is there, but the drive? The aggression? It feels as if he's already mentally checked out. He goes through 5-10 minute stretches of basically running cardio on offense. The guy at Duke had passion for the full 40 minutes. Cooper appears disinterested thus far. Its making the alarm bells go off a bit.

Defensively this team actually isn't that bad. They've ranked pretty respectably across most defensive metrics, notably being 8th in DRTG. I attribute having PJ, Flagg, Christie, and Naji on the wings is helping that.

I am just sad guys. This is a bad team. I don't think they are going anywhere any time soon. Nico's creation, as many believed in February, is doomed to fail. The quicker we eject and salvage some assets the quicker we can hope to get back to where we were with Luka. Cooper is the future. Hopefully someone with a modicum of power within the Mavs can see this.

I'm not worried about Cooper's drive at all. He's 18 and being forced to play out of position against the best players he's ever faced while on a losing team that he's the dedicated savior of. I think looking a little lost or hesitant sometimes is to be expected, especially in these early games.

Breathe.

I don’t like the way it looks either. Maybe this team needs to trade for three difference makers. Kyrie, Davis, & Lively. They don’t have a lot of draft capital, so it will be difficult to pull off, but those three could put them over the top.

In all seriousness, I’m not even the least bit concerned about Flagg. He shows flashes of IT. That’s more than enough to give me the patience to see his growth play out. I think Kidd is playing the long game with him, and I think it’s the right call. He’ll be special. Give it time.

Yeah, Flagg will be fine.  I would be lying to say I expected some of these rough games.   I did expect plenty of bumps but I thought there would be more of a splash.    I think it will come eventually.  I think he is learning that he probably needs to get stronger.   Taking on contact and finishing will come.   Next is a floater in the lane.  In time, he will be a monster.

I think the evaulation is how he plays with PJ, AD, and LIvely.    I think this team looks much different with 1-2 more players who are smart who can create and shoot.   That would open up a ton.   They are real limited with this now.

They are better than they have shown.   It doesn't appear they are as good as I hoped though.   I don't see them as a playoff team now, while before the season I would have said between 6-9 range.  Long season though.

Detroit, SA, and OKC are the top 3. The one that's a surprise is Detroit.

I watched those early 90s Mavs teams. Pre-3Js. Those teams were bad. Low level talent. This team is nowhere near that bad. Plenty of talent. It's just mis-matched. Poorly constructed roster. After they fire Nico, the new GM needs to make some trades. What trades? How to make those trades? Different discussions.

Wasn't AD supposed to be reevaluated today? I see he's listed as OUT for tomorrow's game. Did anyone see an update?

Yes Lively and AD both out.  Still no real update on Lively.  Doesn’t appear to be traveling with team which is concerning.

At first they said AD wanted to go back into the game.  Then he was out for two games.  Now a third game.  With a back to back on Friday/saturday, let’s see if the mavs don’t provide real updates.

Get healthy sure, but would like real updates.

I am concerned about Flagg.  He does show flashes of "IT"...but he also seems to be showing signs of losing confidence.  The Mavs, Kidd?, the fans (us) have put him in an untenable, almost impossible situation.  I've seen way too many bright prospects lose confidence because of  unrealistic coaching and situations.  Carlisle was a master at this, Kidd has done it.  I'm sure others have as well, but I don't watch them.  Once the tender young star loses confidence it takes a long time to regain it...and may never reach the level they would have without the blow to their tender, young egos.  Yeah...I'm worried...

I'm not concerned about Flagg, really, but I'm growing increasingly concerned about the level of dysfunction he has landed in. The front office, coaching staff, training staff, team culture and even the fan base...all rotten to the core. I'm starting to feel sorry for him.

I don’t think I am there yet by any means, but it is a definite possibility in the outcome of his career. Especially in this environment

Flagg, at 18, is a better ball handler than Keith Van Horn at any time in his career. Van Horn was a pretty good shooter, so if Flagg was at least that good, he wouldn't be bad. Flagg has the intangibles that Van Horn never had. Flagg is 18, he's at the beginning of his career. Should be a noticeable difference between now, and the end of the season. Kidd has him playing out of position on an unbalanced roster.

Outside of white and 6'9"/6'10" i'm not sure we can compare these two YET.  Van Horn spent four years in college and was 22 when he entered the league. So its like going back to Van Horn's freshman college season and looking at highlights to compare.

People have to remember that Flagg re-classified and moved up a year. He really should be in his freshman season at Duke right now. But he's in the NBA, starting OUT OF POSITION at point guard averaging 13, 6, and 3.

Admittedly, i thought we'd see more out of him. But i think we're forgetting how young he is. Playing as a 6'9" point guard without a real point guard on the roster is causing him to look out of sync.  I still have no idea what his ceiling is or how good he is, but i'm just guessing.. Keith Van Horn is probably the floor not the ceiling.  But Van Horn wasnt a bad player, especially early on.
