I'm not sure the US should be the favorites (no idea if they are or not). I wonder if they'll even be the best team from North America, frankly.

That's part of my frustration with Luka/Slovenia, honestly. These national teams are getting more and more stacked each year. Luka could be the best player in any one of these tournaments and they still really wouldn't have a chance. It's starting to feel like risking injury just to throw his summer/recovery/developmental time into the dirt.

I realize I wouldn't feel that way if I was Slovenian.

I wouldn´t be 100% sure you don´t have to root for him next season anyway. Schroeder for THJ is another trade that really fits what the Mavs try to accomplish in regards to DJJ. Schroeder/Kleber become the German version of Rodman/Pippen and we will three-peat. Tongue

...and if we are for once completely honest about it, then the reality is that Team Germany had about two good players in the 2010s and Dirk was in his mid 30s still carrying the load for a shitty Dallas team.

As much as people said: Damn it Schroeder, give the ball to Dirk. Dirk was 36 years old, when Schroeder started to play for Germany. Dirk simply could not carry the worst German generation in the summer anymore.

Look at this Germany team now. They don´t even take Hartenstein and Kleber to the Olympics.

winshares aren't everything but still interesting that we have the leaders from the 2018 draft, 2019 draft (Gafford), and 2023 draft

Getting him to 37/38% in our offense would be close to game changing for us

RE: MAVS NEWS: Luka To Return to Slovenia- Will Get Knee Evaluated - Chicagojk - 06-25-2024

I think I prefer being opportunistic if the right deal pops up, but I prefer a simple, but harder to pull off offseason. The Hardaway contract is the big ? that can make everything more complicated.

1) Trade Hardaway without giving a major asset
2) resign DJJ- He is not perfect but lets not hide how important his role is to the current team. Maybe he is someone you look to upgrade that starting spot moving forward. But don't try to get rid of good, when you hope to find great.
3) Sign Gordon Hayward- He was awful in OKC, but I think he would work really good here off the bench. Can you find him 20-25 minutes though? I thought he was pretty solid in Charlotte, right? OKC just didn't work out and his stint was so bad that some teams may discount him. I think there is still something there.
4) Look to see if they can buy a pick in the 40's. From what I understand, second round picks are more valuable with the new CBA. So maybe picks will not be for sale because of this and the 3 G-league spots. Regardless, look to see if there are any buyers. A pick in the 40's is probably a two way guy anyway. Try to beef up the two way spots. We have at least 2 that should be open. If not, just pick someone interesting at 58. It is the longest of long shots that pick turns into anything. Just don't pick a 7 foot Indian guy for marketing opportunities though.

Dallas has their 25 and 26 first round picks. I believe they also have their own second and the Raptors second next year. The Raptors second could be a top 40 pick. Maybe next year, we think we would rather keep our picks and look for young talent. Or maybe we move a pick. Depending on how our internal development goes may help us determine which way we want to go.

Team USA Roster:

Curry/Haliburton
Edwards/Booker/Holiday
Durant/Tatum/Kawhi
Lebron/AD
Embiid/Adebayo

They are by far the favorites.

The reason I disagree is that the Americans don’t play together consistently. It’s a revolving door of who’s who players. Talented, yes, but not as cohesive as some of the other teams, and those teams are starting to be full of NBA players, too.

LeBron playing is a big deal because everybody will definitely fall in line behind him, but that last time around they had the most talented team and then we found out none of them knew how to play anything but one on one basketball. In retrospect, that’s not surprising, because they were all the best players on their teams.

Those stacked international teams have been playing together for years.

Also doesn't hurt that most of them play under FIBA rules all season long and don't have to make adjustments. France and Germany aren't even bringing all of their NBA guys because they are bad fits or lack the necessary amount of reps with the national team.
Just a different game. Some role players turn into stars. Some franchise level players are barely playable. I fully expect to see the FIBA goat version of Mills, Fournier and Theis.

Still a weak move from Embiid to join team USA but at least they added more size and have a legit center rotation. Learned from last years mistake.

I will say that the last time they sent Team USA it was largely the C-squad full of youngins.

Half of this new team are the same dudes from 2020 olympics, and the other half are from the 2012 team.

Only new additions are Edwards, Haliburton, Embiid, Tatum, and Steph.

That lineup alone is a superteam that can play off each other.  This will be a cakewalk for them.

The Detroit Pistons are hiring Dallas Mavericks executive Dennis Lindsey as the Senior VP of Basketball Operations, sources tell ESPN. Lindsey constructed the Utah Jazz era of Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert and now goes to Detroit to join Trajan Langdon's new group.

That is not good. Could be a sign Sweeney becomes the head coach there, too. Really worried we could go back to Javale McChucklenuts signings now with Kidd and Nico by themselves again. That is once again a money issue, too. Lindsey will be #2 in Detroit just like he was in Dallas, so basically Detroit must pay more. Undecided

Nooooooooo!!!!  I hoped Nico learned as much as possible. This is terrible news

Not at all. Trajan (new GM) and Lindsey used to be colleagues on the Spurs for over half a decade before he left to the Jazz. There is serious history there.

I think it’s fantastic that a trusted amigo of Nico’s is now running personnel at a team in the East full of young prospects and brimming with cap space.

My sentiments exactly. The Mavs skill in deal-making was really bad before Lindsey arrived, then was amazing when Lindsey came. It's working the edges of the deals that were so different.

At least the Cuban style is no longer in the building, so that helps. But I sure hope they figure out a high-level replacement with those elite deal-making skills.

Lindsey was not #2 in Dallas, he was an advisor. He is #2 in Detroit

Welp. Enjoy memories of the 2023-24 season. It was good while it lasted.

He was the de facto #2. They wanted to keep him, they could have paid him and given him the title. It´s still f´n Detroit, no matter how much history he has with Langdon. You can always money-whip coaches, assistants, FO staff. This really concerns me. If we go back to pre-Lindsey Nico/Kidd we could be in trouble. This might be more significant news than anything else this off-season. I just wait for the news to land that we wasted a first on (all due respect) DFS. Undecided

Well no... He was not the "de facto #2"

The current Vice President of Basketball Operations (and assistant GM) is Michael Finley. Lindsey was an advisor. He definitely had a voice in the room, but there was no title to give him. You can't have 2 VP's of basketball operations or else we're venturing closer to a Cuban/Donnie Nelson led team where their favorite movie was American Psycho. Could they have money whipped him to stay in an advisory role? Maybe....  But there are only so many GM jobs in the league. Lindsey took 1 of 30 VP positions on a team. It's kind of a no brainer.

I thought Lindsey's job was to show the ropes to Nico and Finley. Give helpful advice and aid negotiation tactics. He had really no public role other than being in the background of a few pictures the last year.

If you'd like, we can  give all the credit to Lindsey for every move made the last 12 months, which means Nico and Finley are horrible at their jobs and we're doomed. But before Lindsey was here the Mavs did make savvy trades that netted us Kyrie, Hardy and Dinwiddie. Were they as good as the the ones the Mavs made in the last year? No. Time will tell and we'll see how important Lindsey was in building this current iteration of the Mavs.

I am saddened from the loss but I think Nico and Finley were the main guys the whole time.

We will find out. With no Cuban and no Lindsey there is not much question who is running the show now. Nico first two years were a disaster and didn’t seem any different than before. It was totally different since Lindsey joined. I think there is valid reason to be concerned.
