RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: - KillerLeft - 06-20-2025 (06-20-2025, 07:18 AM)F Gump Wrote: "quick, fast ball-handling from guys who can pull up and stick it from anywhere on the court. " --- I think the OKC and IND model is far more broad than that. And I don't think Sexton is anywhere close to being that sort of player. Yes, the model includes other ingredients, but as I said, the Mavs have the other ingredients covered. This is why we think they're contenders, obviously. But, there are people acting like the guards they have right now are a preferable solution to ANYTHING ELSE, and that's untrue (using hyperbole to make a point here). I get that you don't like Sexton - I don't think he's all that great, either. But, he's WAY better than Williams (so far) and/or Exum, who has had trouble even staying in the league. I'm not trying to trash either of those guys, who I like, and in Williams' case, the potential is there, sure, but we thought that about Hardy once, too. The sample size of who he is as a player or even a person is miniscule. Planning for him to be good - resting the hopes of a CONTENDER on him being good next year...that's not intelligent. Both of those guys can be right in the appropriate roles, of course...just not "you know, I think we're good at guard, after all" candidates. I'm NOT arguing for Sexton, specifically. I'm saying that if the current guards are the best they can do BECAUSE they don't want to trade Gafford/PJW, that's stupid. Very, very stupid. They cannot go into the season with Williams or Exum as the starting PG and expect to be taken seriously. Sorry, I think that's just incorrect. You need multiple people who can handle the ball and score. Again, I'm so freaked out about this, I don't think their guard rotation is right even if/when Kyrie comes back!! RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: - Mavs2021 - 06-20-2025 I still haven´t watched more than a minute of Mavs ball since the trade, which were highlight clips of the fans sh***ing on Nico during the Lakers game. Yet Adam Silver has tempted me to at least watch Flagg in SL, but if that dumb mofo Nico trades Washington, Gafford and likely more 1st round picks for washed up 35 year old Jrue Holiday, there is no way back for me or this franchise. Also just so you heard it here first. If they start 35 year old Jrue Holiday and play him 38 MPG to cover for Kyrie, he´s the next one going down with a season-ending injury in the first 50 games. Does Patrick Dumont have Social Media? You might want to write him that a Jrue Holiday trade is a #DUMB IDEA or Nico will do it again. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: - F Gump - 06-20-2025 AS I SEE IT ON SEXTON --if the Mavs traded for Sexton, I dont see him being here more than one season. The desperation type need is really just for half a season until Kyrie is back. In summer 2026 he's a FA, and his asking price as a FA will be higher than Mavs want to pay for a platoon player because he will think (rightly) that teams pay more for scoring. And the Mavs are really looking for a team of players who are useful at both ends of the court. So he will walk. I can’t justify paying much for such a limited amount of help. IMO Mavs need to just go ahead and target the right type player ONLY. Oh BTW I do not think Sexton would be more useful than BW or Exum even though he's a better scorer. I'd rather let Flagg get those unused PG minutes, as I think through it all. Let him learn. I think it will be way better than anyone is imagining. He's going to be VERY good. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: - Mavs2021 - 06-20-2025 Sexton has been shooting nearly 50/40/90 on the Jazz. He was a net positive player in all three years in Utah. He makes just $18M a year. He is in the final year of his contract, therefore I assume Gafford/Hardy should suffice for a good negotiator; with Ainge then re-directing Gafford to the Lakers for his desired 1st round pick. Sexton will also be in the final year of his contract, so he´ll play hard. He´s surprisingly only 26 years, too. Nothing indicates he´s losing player except being on poor/mediocre teams. Heck Utah didn´t even want to win. They could have been much better, if not for the tank jobs. But then yeah he´s a losing player just like Washington and Gafford before him. Besides Flagg/Washington/AD/Lively is supposed to be the best defensive four outside of Boston and OKC, so the Mavs can´t handle one below average defender? Not buying it. I´m confused why Brandon Williams at the same age going 8/2/2 shooting 52/40/83 fills you with so much more confidence considering that the Mavs WON four games (GS, Orlando, Detroit, Sacramento) in which Williams played more than 10 minutes and the opponent was not actively trying to LOSE the game. He´s played three games in his career with 30+ minutes and the Mavs lost all three games pretty decisively. Maybe you are right and he´ll turn out to be the starting PG on a winning team, but that would be one hell of a gamble to ask him to hold down the fort. Guess it would still be better than the BS Nico will surely come up with, cause at least you don´t make it worse. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: - Mavs2021 - 06-20-2025 (06-20-2025, 01:07 PM)F Gump Wrote: AS I SEE IT ON SEXTON --if the Mavs traded for Sexton, I dont see him being here more than one season. Nobody has capspace anymore. If a team, does they usually aim higher than Sexton. He got 18M/year for 24/4/4 with 47/37/80 last time. I am pretty sure he was a RFA and the negotiations dragged on forever. I actually think, much like PJ Washington, he´s one of these good starters/6th man on a winning team just below the All-Star level that will be squeezed out of the market by the $30M+ two way players and superstars. I think he´ll be happy to see an 80/4 offer. Nobody will /can offer him that in free agency. I like Simons better, but Sexton is probably the easier trade and extension. it´s easier to accept an 80/4 extension, when your last contract ended with 18M rather than 28M. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: - DanSchwartzgan - 06-20-2025 FWIW on Jrue, the DLLS guys spent the first part of their show talking about the interest in Jrue being real. They think he's a Nico kind of guy and Nico tends to pay up for guys he likes. In other words, they were laying the groundwork for a deal we might not like. The reporting this week that Boston thinks they can get 'positive value' for Jrue may have been referring to a Dallas deal (or at least positioning it that way with Nico). They see Sexton et al as a fallback position if they don't get Jrue, but said Nico tends to be hard to move off of guys he really likes. I wonder if we could somehow move Klay in the outgoing. I'm more worried about what I am left with than what I send out. I'd like to be left with this 8 in my playoff rotation: Kyrie/Jrue/Christie Flagg/PJ/Naji Lively/AD I'd be willing to close with anyone there except maybe Naji. We are already at a point where Klay isn't closing and neither is Gafford if everyone is healthy. I'm also fine with the outgoing being centered around Gafford/Martin/Hardy and one more contract if we aren't giving up a pick or PJ. I don't mind the salary or the age and like having AD, Kyrie and Jrue all expiring at the same time (presumably). That Jrue Holiday would be the move. I have zero interest in him. That’s why I’ve been thinking of ways to get other guards. I just know that Nico is gonna stay with double Bigs and send PJ out for Jrue. My worst nightmare. The more I think about this, it sort of makes sense. Trading for a 35 year old making over 30 million for the next year is really scary though. Watching highlights of Flagg, he has a good feel of throwing alley oops and also creating open threes. Woudl you rather have Jrue or Caleb Martin catching open passes at the three point line? Both defend the same type of player too. Boston clears a ton of salary and can still be in good position for when Tatum comes back. Maybe even Martin can give you 75% of what Jrue gave you??? Atlanta gives up pick 22, but can get a wing at 13 and Gafford for 22. Add that to their young nucleus and that could be a interesting team. The question is they have two centers who will be making good money. Is that worth it? This trade at least gets you thinking. I can't think of another trade where we give up more that i would be ok with. It is also scary think a guy like Brad Stephens who is patient and deliberate, just waiting for desperate Nico to fold. It's hard to place actual value because teams are looking to sell late draft pics. But yes, I think they're all candidates and this is the draft for it. They see Sexton et al as a fallback position if they don't get Jrue, but said Nico tends to be hard to move off of guys he really likes. In an ideal world - one in which Nico isn't running the show - I could very well imagine trading AD and changing the timeline. I would prefer that. I don't see the Mavs doing it though. It sounds too radical after so much was invested in AD. Not to mention the Front Office would take a PR beating. Acquiring Jrue feels a little like an organization that wants to actualize all it's "win now" hype, forcing the issue and hurting future flexibility on a gamble. It just doesn't feel right. If I'm the front office, I would want someone who might bond with Flagg for a good season or two and especially while Kyrie is on the mend. It's hard to imagine Jrue as that player. It's a little easier to imagine Chris Paul because he knows CF, but even easier to imagine someone a bit younger and less expensive. It feels that if you acquired Jrue, you would be locked into a decline with an aging AD, an aging Kyrie, and an aging Jrue - with less flexibilty I think. That seems unfair to someone like Flagg. What kind of team is he looking at in two years? RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: - david75090 - 06-20-2025 My two cents is, build the team around the Flagg timeline. Not saying blow it up, just try to build with younger vets versus older vets. Meaning I'm not interested in bringing in high priced vets at the back end of their careers clogging the salary cap, such as Holiday. I like AD, just think he's the guy to move away from, especially since he thinks he's primarily a PF. Also, his trade value is the most of those I'd be willing to trade. I'm fine with bringing in win-now guys as long as it doesnt cost us assets that fit with Flagg's timeline ( Lively, Christie and draft picks). Unquestionably Kidd was impressed with Flagg, shifted the timeline in his head and told Nico we can win next year, just get me Holiday. Now Nico will give up Washington, Gafford and the Mavs 2026 1st. Oh and the mandatory 2nd round pick. The only people that get it worse from the Adelsons than Mavs fans are the people of Palestine and Iran. ![]() RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: - loki - 06-20-2025 If Holiday is the target it needs to be Gafford+filler for Jrue and a 2031 1st from Boston. But I think Nico is so desperate to justify the Luka trade that Boston is going to take advantage of him. I just hope PJ isn't on the way out. Personally I'd be content with signing a vet point guard with the tax MLE and bringing in a younger guard to develop like Anthony Black or someone in the late 1st round. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: - Ghost of Podkolzin - 06-20-2025 I don't think you have to give up Gaff for Jrue. At this point they just want out of that contract, a year of which is without Tatum. I think they'd take something like Klay/Martin/Hardy RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: - Ghost of Podkolzin - 06-20-2025 (06-20-2025, 02:28 PM)DanSchwartzgan Wrote: FWIW on Jrue, the DLLS guys spent the first part of their show talking about the interest in Jrue being real. He'd be a much better get than Jrue. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: - Chicagojk - 06-21-2025 With Miami, San Antonio, Minny, Houston and Toronto all I treated but not really giving premium value for KD, I wonder if another team jumps in that gives a better offer, but not great? I am going to throw out the Clippers and Detroit. Detroit being the most intriguing. |
