That Boston vs Indiana game was fire. Pacers came back from down 20 in the 3rd in Haliburton's first game back from injury, but he was on a min restriction and only played 20 mins. Pacers kept it close until the end, losing 129-124 at Boston. Pacers are fun to watch. Carlisle has them playing fast.

RE: AROUND the NBA: Randle dislocates shoulder| ANT goes off on refs - DanSchwartzgan - 01-30-2024

I didn’t see this posted anywhere.  Cap projection looks about $1.0mm smaller than previous estimate (Woj-bomb below).  So, among other things, our committed salary next season is further into the tax and closer to the first apron.  Spotrac has the updated number.  Something to bear in mind…we are currently a mile away from the second apron for next season.

But, take on some trade spread in a deal in the next week…add a TP MLE player this summer (or use it to retain DJJ) and then do a big trade using expiring salaries that also has a trade spread and you get to the second apron pretty quickly.  So, one consideration for any current trade has to not only be current season LT, but the limitation is puts on our ability to manage the cap this summer and subsequent summers.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Tuesday that the NBA is projecting a $141 million salary cap for next season. That's an increase on the current number... but it's $1 million below the previous projection of $142 million.

Good info. Thanks.

1 With a $141M cap, tax line would be $171,344,528, Apron 1 would be $178,654,664, Apron 2  $189,485,109. (All numbers are now pegged to the cap and rise at the very same percentage as the cap does.)

2 One thing we have to get used to, is that when this season ends, the ability of teams to increase salary and jump up salary-wise VIA TRADE to land around the 2nd apron no longer exists. You can't even do so to bust the 1st apron. Any trade of any kind using a spread of more than 100% will hard cap you thereafter to stay below Apron 1.

Yeah, that was a nice game to watch! I'm trying to think of trades the Pacers could make that would turn them into favorites from the East. Came up with these:

1) Swap Myles Turner for Porzingis. If they can convince the Celtics about this, it would be dual addition by subtraction. Big Grin One, by trading away Turner, and two, by taking Porzingis away from a rival. Turner's rim protection or deterrence isn't that good cause he's not long enough, strong enough, explosive enough or mobile enough. Pacers have to add pick(s).

2) Trade Ben Sheppard (+?) for Quentin Grimes. (Grimes is someone the Mavs should trade for. He would also be real nice for the Nuggets.)

Their defensive efficiency probably skyrockets with these two trades.

1-5: Haliburton, Grimes, Nesmith, Siakam, Porzingis
6-10: Nembhard, Hield, Mathurin, Walker, Jackson/Smith
+ McConnell

I only saw a few highlights and I didn't see the last injury, but Embid looked awful moving last night. That is not good. Now Philly is in 5th place in the East after such a great start. There was a thought Philly should jump on deals now instead of waiting until the summer when you don't know who will become available. They are going to have some difficult decisions to make relatively soon.

Do you believe that this impending challenge might motivate some teams to get bigger deals done at this deadline?

Theoretically, yes.  In addition to the trade restrictions for over-apron teams regarding aggregation and trade spreads (or lack thereof), the TDL is the last time a team can positively impact their tax position for the current season.  Teams used to be able to do this before the end of the season, but now teams can't get out of their current season tax situation using post-season trades.  It needs to be done now.

Golden State can put on a brave face (we are looking for a player for player deal...IOW, we aren't paying to move Wiggins).  But, when push comes to shove.  they are working with a deadline.  The decisions they make now also impact the future because if they don't create a path to get under the 2nd apron for next season the 100% spread kicks in and they can't aggregate to get under the line.  We've not seen this before, so we don't know how aggressive some of these teams will be.

Video of Embiid's injury. Kuminga falls directly on Embiid's knee. Probably a sprain since he managed to walk out on his own power.

Very interesting. Thanks Dan. Another we will have to wait and see moment over the next week.

The NBA and NBPA have now finalized plans for the two-day draft in June, sources tell ESPN.

My personal favorite, Lebron’s face while Darvin Ham draws up a play

The Knicks are really impressive. Moved into the 3rd seed. They're on an 8-game heater without Randle, and OG has sat out the last 2 games. Brunson is the head of that snake, and he's getting help from Divincenzo. He's been tremendous and actually should be the AS game starter over Dame. Cleveland has been playing well too. The top of the East looks a lot different so far. Miami on a 7-game losing streak is surprising too.

Yes, I think the ramifications of the new CBA (which hit full blast the day the post-season begins this year) will have a SIGNIFICANT motivating effect for some teams. How you end this season cap-wise now has consequences in May-June choices and flexibility, not to mention the financial tax impact.

But how many teams will make it a PRIORITY? And how far will they be pushed? And will we see some sell-offs that we don't expect? Hard to predict. I'm thinking we will see some stuff that's unexpected, but don't have a good feel on who and what.

Doesn’t surprise me a bit that they are winning without Randle.

We are so dumb. Trade Kyrie for anything. Guy is the softest player in the league. It makes zero sense to cater to this idiot
