Indeed.  He's a top modern day defender.

Wonder what that means for Capela's future there. I would have expected Okongwu to get a lot more so I wonder if they just plan to keep both throughout Capela's contract now.

I consider Luka a SF, so we're more than ok there.  None of our guards (I consider THJ & J.Green guards) can rebound well, Kyrie being our best.  Powell and Maxi are terrible rebounders.  Hopefully Lively will be a rebounding monster.  GWill is below average.

I hate-watched a lot of Laker games last season.  Gabriel was a good fit on their roster as they had plenty of other guys who create offense.  He worked well as a good defender and hustle rebounder/garbage man.  Jarred Vanderbilt received more hype but Gabriel was just as effective overall in the same role.

He's a player that I'm surprised can't find a spot in the NBA right now.  I'd much rather have him than Markieff Morris.

My hope with rebounding is that Lively improves as the season goes on and Jason Kidd can convince Grant Williams to hit the defensive boards much harder.  Grant is a strong dude and should be able to capably box players out.

We don't really have a power forward on our roster who is even an average rebounder.  That could be a problem for us.

Well, Capela has BEEN on the trade block, so I think it was clear they were ready to move on from him even before this extension. They WANTED to trade him this summer, there's no doubt in my mind. They just didn't get the deal they wanted (great job not getting fleeced, Mavs).

For sure, I'm just saying I wonder if they were trying to do that because they assumed they'd have to pay Okongwu similarly to the 21 mil a year Capela is getting and if this team friendly deal changes things.

It may not at all and they may have had Okongwu penciled in at this contract the entire time they were shopping Capela but just feels like they got a discount on their future big man is all.

Oh, I'm with you now. Sorry, I read too fast.

That's actually a good question. I assume Capela is still viewed as a piece preferably moved, since this extension brings the inevitability of him losing his spot ever closer. But, to your point, maybe Capela can be convinced to come off the bench and take less on his next deal. I guess the question then becomes: is ATL's cap healthy enough to MAKE IT to the end of Capela's current deal?

Question is how they manage their roles. Based on last season Capela was slowly losing minutes and ultimately lost his spot in the closing five. But if this trend continues and Okongwu replaces him in the starting five Capela's value is going to tank even more.
A very Mavs-like situation. How to balance the declining trade value of a vet vs minutes for a younger player that took/should be taking his spot.

Ya, I still think the plan is to move him because that ~38 mil is a ton to commit to the center position so would be hard to think they want to do that for 2 full seasons but it's less than the 45-48 mil I was expecting them to have to pay if they wanted to go that route.

Simple ESPN article, but I think it has some cool facts like:

- Record 125 international NBA players from 40 countries and 6 different continents (no Antarctica born player yet  Sad  Big Grin ).

- The Mavs and the Thunder lead the way with 8 international players each.

For me the interesting comparisation is highschool/college vs international leagues. Josh Green or Dwight Powell count as international players but they played college bball in the US.

You know, DF1998, international always seems to be a gray area and a fun topic for debate (including here on these forums). Many fun questions to debate including but not limited to:

Is Josh even the best Active Mav Aussie? Or is it Kyrie (born in Melbourne Australia) ?

Was JJ Barea an International Player? Puerto Rico is part of the USA, but they have their own FIBA squad.

When Dirk becomes an American Citizen (earlier this year he said hopefully by 2024, he will be "American Citizen Dirk"), does he have to give back his designation of "International Player"?

I don't think there are any wrong answers to the questions above, though I'm sure voting percentages wouldn't be 50/50.

That's why I am more interested in the development and coaching part. Don't really care about official lists or rankings. In that sense even someone from the US can be an "international". Would be really interesting to see (more) high ranked US prospects in international leagues instead of college or g-league.

Josh plays for Australia = Australian
Irving plays for Team USA = American
Dirk played for Germany = German
JJ Barea played for Puerto Rico = Puerto Rican
Joe Embiid plays for America = Coward

See not difficult at all.

Maxey sticks out like a sore thumb.  Sounds like Bey was looking for 16-18 million a year.  ATL probably made a wise decision on him.    Different player, but I think he is comparable to Jae Crowder in that they are solid players but may not be as good as a lot of people think.  I like Patrick Williams but he is another guy who has shown in glimpses, but it is not an every game thing.  Supposedly he was looking for over 20 million.

Is Precious a center only?  Can he play PF?  Any interest?

I saw that Patrick Williams was looking for a contract in the range of 26-30 mil a year. No way he gets that but obviously that's what he's looking for.

Bey, Quickly, and Maxey are the real prizes. Not sure there is a Mavs angle there though.

So far Lakers vs. Nuggets is pretty entertaining.

Jokic looking just as dominant as in the playoffs. It will be difficult to come up with a narrative that prevents him from winning another MVP award. But I am sure Perkins and co will try their best.

Yeah Jokic looks as dominant as ever.

Lebron so far has been quiet. Just had 2 highlights made on him. Nuggets as a whole look unstoppable.

Nikola Jokic might be the most dominant player I've seen since prime Steph

RE: AROUND the NBA: Adams out for the year| Avdija 4/55 extension, Nesmith 3/33 extension - Chicagojk - 10-24-2023

Jokic game is so beautiful to watch. lakers got close mid fourth and after timeout every possession went through Jokic and they got good look after good look.

One thing that stands out is these teams are much bigger than the mavs. Mavs need to find some more talented size over next year or so.

LeBron wanted the ball at the elbow and DLo ignored him

Also, Wood couldn't even get in during garbage time. Just lol.
