RE: AROUND the NBA: Nuggets complete the sweep, head to the Finals - Chicagojk - 05-23-2023

Saw Kelly Iko of the Athletic say Harden is the top target for the Rockets in Free agency. Outside of Harden, other high ranking targets include Brook Lopez, Dillon Brooks, Cam Johnson and Austin Reaves.

They also said acquiring a veteran point guard is a primary objective with Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson, Donte DiVencenzo and even Chris Paul mentioned.

If they renounce all cap holds but Reaves, trade #17 for future assets (which they can still trade later in the season) and decline their team options (Bamba, Beasley, Harrison), they can offer 30 mil to Kyrie.

I did not know this.  I am now officially worried.  If they can retain Reaves and give Kyrie $30 million...

Just for a second, let's say that LeBron really does decide to retire. How does that affect the Kyrie equation?

1. I can't imagine him wanting to go play there, without his friend LeBron.
2. I can't imagine the Lakers wanting to rebuild around 31-year-old Kyrie.

Who else is competition to sign Kyrie (or S&T)?

It seems like he's landed in a pretty good spot. The team is pretty good, probably better than last season's record indicated. With the addition of one or two mid-level players, might actually challenge for a championship. His role is complementary, and expectations aren't sky-high that he will carry the full responsibility for wins and losses. There are lots of serviceable pieces on the team. They've got good locker-room chemistry.

I think he re-signs.

After hearing this info, if Lebron doesn't retire, Kyrie is more or less officially gone from my point of view. The only silver lining to this is that it (maybe) is what finally wakes Cuban up.

What’s the point of Kyrie putting up such a stink in Bnk then? I’ll go on record and sig bet anyone that Kyrie will not sign for less than the $38M he’s getting paid right now as a starting year salary (I think he wants a raise to this year salary too).

Killer if you're seeing this I wonder how you're feeling about D'Lo these days.

The guy came from the Lebron school of, get all that you can get from these billionaires.

Kobe also attended that school.

Actually, most NBA players make the choice for the money, at the expense of everything else.  Wouldn't you?

It's AFTER they've signed the biggest offer they can, that they start to complain about their team, their role, winning, their coach, etc.

It's human nature.

It's a pretty small group that's willing to take less, and that doesn't complain afterward.

Dirk is my hero!

That also falls under what I was talking about with a team being able to sign him with space. At least I believe that is an angle, if not, I have a hard time believing Kyrie would take that much of a paycut to play another non-championship season with Lebron, who BTW leaves to his son’s drafted team the season after.

Can't restructure Lebron's contract at all. So that scenario is DOA.

From Larry Coon:

60. Can existing contracts be renegotiated?

A contract for four or more seasons can be renegotiated after the third anniversary of its signing, extension, or previous renegotiation (if the previous negotiation increased any season's salary by more than 4.5%). Contracts for fewer than four seasons cannot be renegotiated. A contract cannot be renegotiated between March 1 and June 30 of any year.

Only teams under the cap can renegotiate a contract, and the salary in the then-current season can be increased only to the extent that the team has room under the cap (and cannot increase the player's salary beyond the maximum salary). A renegotiation can only be used to provide a salary increase -- players can't take a "pay cut" in order to create more cap room for the team.

A deal for Kyrie starting at 30 million would be around 4/135. 4 yr deal with the Mavs is 4/209. So you're asking Kyrie to take a 74 million discount to sign with the Lakers. On top of increased taxes.

For the entirety of Mavs free agency in the last decade we hoped a star would take a discount to come team up with Dirk because the situation would be SO much better. What happened every time? The star ALWAYS took the money. Always. And if the rare star did take a discount to go somewhere he really liked, it was like a 5-10 mil difference. Not nearly a 100 million.

I think any scenario where Kyrie takes a "discount" to sign with the Lakers is incredibly unrealistic to the point that it's laughable.

RE: AROUND the NBA: Nuggets complete the sweep, head to the Finals - HoosierDaddyKid - 05-23-2023

Kyrie Irving and Trae Young were both at last night's game for the 2nd time this series. The rumors won't go away that the Lakers are going to try to land one or the other.

Now Trae is an interesting thought...

He's a really good, maybe even transcendent offensive player.  But oh, so weak on defense.  Sort of an even more mercurial version of Christian Wood.  The highs are really high, but so are the lows.

I get the feel that Atlanta is perhaps getting tired of the roller coaster ride he provides.  So maybe open to a trade like this?

So do the Lakers trade AD straight up for Trae?  Salaries match.

Which team says no?

As expected. No one is talking about the Nuggets. NBA media on LBJ watch. Windhorst mentioning that LeBron could sit out next season. Fix a number of medical issues. Most importantly ankle surgery to clean out scar tissue (Dirk did the same but it didn´t fix his issues). Return in 2024/25 to play 1-2 more seasons with his son.
Wonder how a decision like this would work from a contract/salary cap point of view.

As for LeBron retiring. I will believe it when I see it.

Why would you assume Mark Cuban is going to give Kyrie 4 years, $209 million?

He already said with the new CBA, "there is probably a number we have to walk away." We have no idea what that number is.

I will make a friendly bet with you we dont offer Kyrie the full $209 million. I'm not super confident but I find it unlikely.

RE: AROUND the NBA: Nuggets complete the sweep, head to the Finals - RoyTarpleysGhost - 05-23-2023

Not to even mention...Do we want to pay a small guard $52 million a year for his age 32-35 seasons?
