RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - F Gump - 12-10-2025 "If they can add a guy without giving up the pick, great. If not, I think they would rather wait. " And if I'm the Mavs and I can't get the right value for AD, I would rather wait too. The idea that ATL can add AD and keep all their most valued assets and only give up scraps, sorry I'm not your huckleberry. I happen to believe that ATL is at a crossroads where they are feeling internal heat to push their trajectory up to the next level. Waiting several years (by which time their core good players are going to elevate onto much bigger salaries and they are likely to have a hard-to-manage cap) is not in their best interest. The teams around the league usually hold onto their very best players so they can build around them. This is a special window of opportunity for ATL (or someone) to add one of those guys that you can almost never find available. If ATL is not the team in a hurry, then someone will be. (And ATL has to consider that if they don't do what it takes to get AD, some other team might, and might jump right past them and leave them still struggling.) Teams who want to take a jump up the ladder, they are always out there, emerging here and there. Some team will come to me because I have a star who is already fully developed as a player. In exchange, I want a young raw star (or equivalent pick/s) who will be superb somewhere down the road. If I am the Mavs, I gotta realize what I have, set my price, and be patient until that someone comes chasing with SERIOUS value they are willing to offer. " I don’t think Atlanta would be interested in a swap with the Mavs. But that could be something where they only potentially move down a few slots instead of out of the lottery completely. Mavs could also leap frog the Pelicans with the lottery so you just never know. I just can’t see that pick being included for anyone less than a Giannis level player. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - khaled1987 - 12-10-2025 The whole "this draft is generational" can be a bit overblown. I've read the same in 2008. 2010, 2012, 2014, 2025 among others. And frankly some drafts that was considered awful was actually the great one (2009 & 2011 were widely regarded as bad drafts) And even if it is, there is a Sam Bowie,Darko & Thabeet in the greatest of drafts (1996 is probably the only one that the top 7 were good). NO pick is a big asset but it isn't the untouchable one folks making it. AD brings Hawks into true contender in the playoffs, there should be no deal without inclusion of the pick or pick swap. They don't have any other interesting piece for the Mavs to trade for. It depends on how much Atlanta wants him, AD isn't a neutral or negative asset, the NO makes their deal likely the best one among other Eastern Conference buyers, without it they are likely offering the worst package RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - Mavs2021 - 12-10-2025 (12-10-2025, 07:39 AM)khaled1987 Wrote: The whole "this draft is generational" can be a bit overblown. Harris Anderson Clarkson McDermott Kleber (undrafted) TJ Warren Parker and Exum were the busts, but that´s largely been an injury thing. Parker was 20/6/3 shooting 49/37/74 as a 21 year old, when he tore his ACL. Played 161 games over the next five years. 2008 also looks pretty good. Top 7 worked out pretty decent. Beasley had a decent career considering he was high as a kite for all of it. And that Mayo would develop a serious drug addiction is hard to scout. 2025 has shown great early returns. Feel like mostly these days the busts are more related to injuries or off-court issues than bad basketball skill assessment. That´s a hard thing to scout, when a guy from a poor background is faking it to earn himself life-altering money. And I swear whoever thought Thabeet could play in the NBA after watching him run for 10 seconds is a complete moron. If you are that scared of your own judgment, you should not work in basketball. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - RoyTarpleysGhost - 12-10-2025 I don't think there's any chance you're getting that NOLA 26 unprotected pick in an AD trade. Can ATL add top 3 or top 5 protection on it? Looking at their stash of tradeable picks, not sure what would happen if that pick ends up being top 3 and doesnt convey to Dallas. Which is the same for most draft prospects, work ethic, personal life, injuries are all part of the decisive process that you can't control. NO pick could land a franchise player, or someone far worse than Queen whom they got the pick for. And luck is 50% of the process. Hawks have traded Trae for Luka, drafted Risacher because others refused to play for them, have long history of not drafted BPA. Why do you think they will be super confident of getting the best player? (12-10-2025, 08:53 AM)omahen Wrote: Here is where we don't agree, which impacts our evaluations. In my opinion, Atlanta would get better with AD, but far from becoming a true contender. You keep mentioning the term contender, and I am not sure what it means for you tbh. Can you define it in this context? Because I fail to see a true contender in the East, a team that was supposed to tank like Boston is 3rd atm, Knicks with Mike Brown, who hasn't won a playoff series in 13 years. are 2nd and a young Detroit team is the first. It is all over the place, Chicago were 9-7 and looked legit and then they lose 7 in a row and out of the play-in place. A trip to the Finals is more than possible with AD, the last one in their history? In 1961 when the NBA was 9 teams, playoffs were 4 teams and Hawks were in St. Louis playing in the Western Conference. Hawks had plenty of top 5 or top 10 picks in this century alone with nothing more than conference finals to show for, so winning the East and getting spanked by OKC would still be the greatest season in their history (in Atlanta) and would be worth it. I think AD gives them one of the best chances to do, and this is probably the reason they are interested. If I were them, I would try to get Giannis first, but I won't make the pick untouchable RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - omahen - 12-10-2025 (12-10-2025, 10:00 AM)khaled1987 Wrote: You keep mentioning the term contender, and I am not sure what it means for you tbh. Can you define it in this context? Good question. For me a contender is a team with a legit chance to win it all. In my opinion, true contenders are (of course assuming teams are healthy): Tier 1: OKC in a league of their own. It will be an extremely hard task to beat them in any best of seven series, although some teams could give them trouble Tier 2: - Houston. They are good but they need a good PG to be really good - Denver. They have Jokic but I think they are vulnerable a lot mostly because they are injury prone and have bad defense - Detroit. They play good defense, but could use some reinforcements on offensive side - Cleveland. Their team should be good, if they can stay healthy. I think they are much better than their current standing - NY. They have the pieces, at least in the starting five. Can they put them together when it matters most? I would have LAL as perhaps borderline Tier 2. Need to see them in more games against top teams. Very match-up dependent team due to their lack of athleticism. I think Atlanta is in tier 4 as they are. I am not sure if swapping (lets say) KP and Risacher for AD puts them two tiers higher. I agree that East looks much weaker than West, but lets not forget Atlanta is currently 9th in that weak East. Getting Davis would perhaps put them in a fight with Detroit, NY and Cleveland to get out of East. Assuming they keep Trae, he would still be a constant target on defense. Close to impossible to hide him against top teams. Johnson and Davis are both injury prone, so it is a big risk that one of them misses the playoffs. If he does, they can't really survive/replace his production. For me a move for an injury prone guy in his thirties is a move you make if you are: a) sure he puts you in tier 1 contenders or b) you keep enough assets if the thing doesn't work out - don't spend top assets for him I don't think AD fits under a). I certainly don't believe that they would become a surefire team to win the East with AD. Based on how strong OKC is, I would be very careful and rather keep the great assets that can make you good in a couple of years. I would not bet my future against them. AD is a short term move, that gives you a very short window where a lot of things need to go right (and even that might not be enough). Mavs are a prime example of how quickly that plan can fall apart. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - mvossman - 12-10-2025 (12-10-2025, 06:05 AM)F Gump Wrote: "If they can add a guy without giving up the pick, great. You are arguing from the point of view of how the FO should be operating. They should be patient when trading him and not extend him (unless its reasonable enough that it could improve his trade value). I am looking at this from the perspective of a fan. I don't know what the FO is thinking. I have to infer from the transactions they make (and to some degree rumors about them afterwards). So when I say I hope they trade AD and cite one of the reasons is concern over them signing him to an albatross extension, your response is they don't have to extend him just because they didn't trade him. I realize that they don't have to, but they could (they have done worse!). As a fan, trading AD means they are not going to sign him to an albatross extension and its a strong signal that they are fully committed to building around Flagg. Of course I hope they use good process in doing it, but as a fan I don't have any exposure to that. When I say that they need to trade him before next season starts, I am not arguing that should be their mindset. Its what I am hoping for as a fan because I think the alternatives are likely worse. As for the process, they need to be patient but they also need to take into account the significant injury risk and they need to be reasonable about what his value is. AD is not worth the NOP pick. Yeah, there has been a lot of talk about Atlanta, but Detroit was another one of the teams mentioned. Something like AD + Klay for Harris + Ivey + Holland + Stewart. Some young players, salary relief and Stewart makes it easier to trade Gafford for Mathurin (and the salary relief gets you the room need to sign him). Maybe you get some assets as well that would probably have to go to Indiana. I really have no idea what the pick value is here (and maybe we don't know until next week or so) RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - Smitty - 12-10-2025 (12-10-2025, 11:21 AM)mvossman Wrote: Yeah, there has been a lot of talk about Atlanta, but Detroit was another one of the teams mentioned. Maybe you get some assets as well that would probably have to go to Indiana. They would have to take Martin also. Not legally, just that I want to get that off the books as well. I'd need some unprotected picks also. The Pistons '27 FRP would give the Mavs a pick in every draft. I'd probably ask for '27+'29 instead of '26+'28. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - Mavs2021 - 12-10-2025 Why would the Pacers trade Mathurin? They´ll obviously offer us some combination of McConnell, Walker, Jackson and a future 1st for Gafford. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - BigDirk41 - 12-10-2025 I'm in the camp of we need to trade AD to get on the Flagg timeline, but I'm with F Gump on you don't just deal him to deal him. They need to hold their ground and someone will give in and meet our demands at some point. We got here because Nico didn't take the best deal for Luka or even try to find the best deal. AD is a game changer and can absolutely decide who comes out of the East this year. That has great value. Someone will offer us a crazy deal for AD. Just have to be patient. No reason to move him just for the sake of it. Risacher, NOP pick swap, and worst of 2027 MIL/NOP 1st is the bare minimum we should get from ATL, otherwise I don't any reason to trade AD for late 1sts and expiring. And imho AD would definitely give Atlanta a legit shot to make it through the Finals. Davis, JJ, Trae, Daniels, NAW, Okongwu, Kennard, that's a pretty strong core to compete in the East, and they still get a lottery pick cause Mavs would likely end up in the 8-10 range after moving AD. Financially is a bit tricky for ATL, their 26/27 cap actually sits at 161M and AD in/Risacher out would add ~45M at their payroll (tax line projected to be at 201M), I don't know if they could afford AD without moving Trae but then it would make little sense to acquire Davis. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - Chicagojk - 12-10-2025 Anyway for a trade of AD to PHX. PHX has gotten off to a much better start then expected. Their owner is not thinking longterm. They lack draft picks so that is a negative, but you could also lesson the picks Houston is getting in the future. Adding AD to Booker may be an attractive win now move. I can't find a work though. I was think AD and Exum or Jalen Green and Maluach. Green is a frustrating player who is still young. Maluach is raw. Although, you are getting two young players who fit the timeline better. Green can be a trial run as well. |
