RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - michaeltex - 07-25-2025 (07-25-2025, 03:05 PM)mvossman Wrote: Just about every champion has a top 5 offensive creator. The only recent exception is Boston, who had an insane amount of talent/creation in the starting lineup (Tatum, Brown, Jrue, White). Posted this back in April: For discussion purposes, here are the last to NBA Champions plus this year's #1 seed. Season Team Def. Rank Off. Rank 24-25 OKC 1 T-1 (current #1 seed, Best championship odds) 23-24 BOS 2 4 22-23 DEN 15 6 21-22 GSW 2 2 20-21 MKE 9 9 19-20 LAL 3 4 (COVID season) 18-19 TOR 5 9 17-18 GSW 11 1 16-17 GSW 2 1 15-16 CLE 10 4 14-15 GSW 1 1 Unscientifically, the Defensive rank for NBA champions is 5.9, while the offensive rank is 4.1 Maybe some skewing due to 4 GSW teams showing up, but (except for 17-18) they were high in both categories. There are also other factors that contribute to winning a championship but are hard to quantify. For example, injuries, even if the player is still able to play is there a diminished performance? How officials call games. How long the series go. Is there a bad matchup that tilts the results. Does a team play way over (or under) seasonal averages. Just looking at the data it feels like you have to have at least a decent defense, but you damn well need to have a good offense. I might even theorize that a top offense can improve the defense by putting so much scoring pressure the opponent can't keep up and makes key mistakes. (think last year's finals) One area the above does NOT show is the effect of injuries, acute or negging. Would IND/OKC be a different story if Haliburton isn't hurt? Would 23-24 be different if Luka was not playing on one leg, maybe the outcome doesn't change, but it would have been more interesting. I have more faith in their health than you do (though I concede it requires literal "faith"), but I agree with the rest of this statement 100%. I've never really dug into it all this deeply, but my eye-test observation has always been (especially recently) that the best offensive teams all get a ticket to the 2nd round, and then the groups from that list who can play the best defense continue to advance. Without a top 10 offense, you're not even in the conversation as a contender, imho. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - ThisIStheYear - 07-26-2025 (07-25-2025, 12:52 PM)mvossman Wrote: I have read a lot on here that size is coming back and that is where the NBA is heading. But it still looks to me like space is what wins in the playoffs, not size. Its not just the Warriors, we just watched two teams in the finals play with more space than size. Same with the prior champion. Size is great, but I don't think trading space for size is a winning formula. I guess we will see. Yes. Space is what matters. Now, if you have bigs that also create space, you’re golden. Unfortunately, the Mavs bigs are reundant in that they all operate midrange in. That’s a valuable player, but you only want one playing at a time. Maybe AD will finally develop that 3 point shot or the Mavs will make a trade for a stretch big. Otherwise, combined with one of the worst backcourts in the NBA for at least 60% of the season, there’s nothing Flagg can do to save them. I’d prefer a reboot. For me this is going to be a make or break year for Lively from the standpoint of can we ever depend on him being healthy. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - SleepingHero - 07-27-2025 @esidery The best available unrestricted free agents: Gary Payton II Ben Simmons Russell Westbrook Trey Lyles Malcolm Brogdon Chris Boucher Thomas Bryant Amir Coffey Cody Martin Precious Achiuwa Dalano Banton Cam Payne Delon Wright Markelle Fultz Alec Burks Torrey Craig Landry Shamet RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - SleepingHero - 07-27-2025 (07-27-2025, 02:12 PM)SleepingHero Wrote: @esidery Pretty uninspiring list truthfully. The doldrums of Free Agency is upon us. Surprised Westbrook has not found a spot yet. I figured Denver would've been motivated to bring him back at least. I also thought MIL had some interest? Speaking of MIL has basically S/W Lillard, Signed Turner, and kept with the status quo. Basically the same exact team with Lillard+Lopez+Middleton out. Kuzma+Turner in. Is Gary Payton II done for? He was/is one of the better defensive guards. Simmons being a FA isn't that surprising but also a sad state of affairs seeing how bad his career has gone down. The doldrums of Free Agency is upon us. While I’m pleased you are posting just about anything, at this point it would be more interesting to know who has slots rather than who is available (especially since Dallas has 16 already). It is really hard to know who will run with 14 and who will sent their mid-late seconds into two-way slots and so forth. I asked ChatGPT who has 13 or fewer guaranteed contracts. This might give a clue as to who still has work to do. It gave me ATL, CLE, DET, GSW, IND, PHI and SAC. Atlanta has 13 total contracts and two of those aren’t fully guaranteed (Krejci is Partial and another second rounder from last year is NG). Cleveland only has 12 total as they’ve not signed Proctor. But the much talked about Wade is partially guaranteed and they have another guy who is NG. We’ve talked about GSW before as they appear to have guys lined up if they ever get something done with Kuminga. Indy has 13 total, but one of those is NG Wiseman. They also have two FA centers who aren’t done yet and would presumably get them to 14 or 15 depending on what happens. Phil has 13 if you count PG Bona and early second rounder Broom. So, they get to 14 if they sign Grimes (and keep both cheap centers). SAC has 13, but two of those are NG Ellis and NG T. Davis. They also have Raynaud as a mid-second who could make the roster. So, they could be at 11 or 14 very easily. I go through all of those to say these seem to be the teams with the most opportunity to do something (including a deal for someone like OMax). But, maybe something bigger also. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - KillerLeft - 07-27-2025 (07-27-2025, 02:15 PM)SleepingHero Wrote: Pretty uninspiring list truthfully. I think with Westbrook and quite a few others on that list it's probably not about "does anyone want them" as much as it's about them accepting the new reality of what level of pay they're being offered. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - SleepingHero - 07-31-2025 @BrettSiegelNBA The Kings and Suns have made strong pushes for a Jonathan Kuminga sign-and-trade, yet the Warriors have stood firm. As of earlier this week, New York continued to show strong interest in signing Simmons as teams in on Simmons await his decision.” RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - SleepingHero - 07-31-2025 NBACentral @TheDunkCentral The Phoenix Suns’ trade offer for Jonathan Kuminga includes: • Royce O’Neale • Nick Richards • Four second-round picks RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - SleepingHero - 07-31-2025 @TheDunkCentral Jonathan Kuminga reportedly believes that the Warriors have stunted his growth, per @ShamsCharania RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - SleepingHero - 07-31-2025 @TheDunkCentral The Golden State Warriors have shown no interest in DeMar DeRozan or Devin Carter in a potential Jonathan Kuminga trade with the Kings, per @sam_amick "My understanding is the Warriors weren't interested in Carter or DeRozan. As of a couple weeks ago, the Kings weren't willing to pay Kuminga into the $20 million range (AAV)." RFA sucks for those players this year. Warriors don't want him but they need him as a trade asset. Personally I would have liked the Nets offseaon much better if they threw a contract at Kuminga rather than doing what they did. I have no idea what their plan is. Maybe Kuminga is not worth it, but I would have gambled and found out. The Nets have no future foundation...unless a few of their draft picks really hit. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - SleepingHero - 07-31-2025 Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) BREAKING: New York Knicks forward Mikal Bridges has agreed to a four-year, $150 million contract extension with the franchise, agents Sam Goldfeder and Jordan Gertler of Excel Sports Management tell ESPN. The new deal includes a player option for 2029-30 and a trade kicker. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - Chicagojk - 07-31-2025 I have no idea what to do with contracts any more. I think Bridges is a good player but sort of had a average year. On one side you have a guy making 75 million and then others who are signing or 5-6 million or the minimum. Close to 40 million is probably near the higher end for the type of player he is suppose to be. He wasn't really that player last year. I guess the Knicks are a contender and want to limit any issues that could prevent that. NY is now just 16 mil under the second apron next season with only 9 players under contract (if Yabusele picks his option next season). They still have Mitchell Robinson to resign next season. If they do, rest of guys can all be vet min and they will still be over the second apron. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - SleepingHero - 08-01-2025 @RTNBA The Kings reportedly offered Jonathan Kuminga a three-year, $63 million contract in a potential sign-and-trade that would send Malik Monk & a 2030 Lottery Protected FRP to the Warriors. Golden State rejected this offer as they want an unprotected FRP. per @sam_amick RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - SleepingHero - 08-01-2025 (07-31-2025, 07:09 PM)omahen Wrote: So best remaining 2026 FA is gone. I think NYK is still looking for their big fish and any of their dudes besides Brunson and maybe Bridges/OG are available. What is interesting is how are teams priming for 2026 FA going to build their team if all the good players are already locked up? |
