RE: MAVS NEWS: DAL confident in ability to resign THJ this summer - omahen - 06-07-2021 (06-07-2021, 02:40 PM)SleepingHero Wrote: The starter wrinkle is interesting to me. I just don't see Mavs playing any meaningful defense with THJ as a starting guard. He sure is a lights out shooter next to Luka, also very durable. I was looking at potential suitors: 1. Group one hard cap, so no way to sign/SnT him: BKN, GSW, LAL, LAC, MIL, PHI (likely), Uta 2. Rebuilding group, no use for vet: CLE, DET, HOU, OKC, ORL 3. Have their own shooters: ATL (Bogi), BOS (Fournier), CHI (LaVine, White), CHA (Rozier), IND (LeVert, McDermot), MIA (Robinson, Nunn), MIN (Beasley, Russel), PHO (Booker), POR (you name it), SAC (Hield), SA (plenty of guards), TOR (Trent) 4. Not going there again - NY This leaves following groups: 1. Could use a shooter, no cap space but not hard cap problem: Denver, Washington, NO (if they let Ball walk for nothing) 2. Could use a shooter and have cap space: Memphis (if they renounce Winslow) Memphis really desperately needs shooting and THJ is definitely much better than their current SG options (Allen, Bane, Konchar, Melton). So I could see them as driving his price up and basically I only see them as a team with real potential interest in him. On the other hand they do have four average SG - what would they do with them? Washington would likely be very interested SnT partner for him, as they desperately need to put as much shooting as possible around Westbrook. Problem same as with hypothetical KP trade. I just don't see any contgender starter value in Washington players not named Beal. Would NO entertain Ball for THJ SnT if they don't fancy paying Ball big money? Hell, I would send Maxi that way as well if that's what it takes to make Rui the prospect coming this way although then you're going to have issues making the money match (Bertans/Rui/Thomas Bryant for KP/Maxi would work I think). You could theoretically create up to about 6 mil in cap space in a KP trade if my math is right. I'd use 40 mil to overpay Lonzo and the rest to sign Holmes. Luka Lonzo DFS Rui Holmes Addresses a lot of our issues and you could then plug in Bertans for shooting when needed (I do think it's also important that we keep personnel in place that would allow us to go 5 out when we want to at times as well which would have to be addressed if both KP and Maxi are out the door this offseason). Just a conversation about it, lol. RE: MAVS NEWS: DAL confident in ability to resign THJ this summer - DallasBasketball - 06-07-2021 How good is Bertans? Is there reason to believe he is as good or better than 2021 playoff KP? RE: MAVS NEWS: DAL confident in ability to resign THJ this summer - omahen - 06-07-2021 (06-07-2021, 03:17 PM)JamesConway Wrote: https://twitter.com/thenbacentral/status/1401993823736274950?s=21 For Washington to get KP means Bertans is in the deal along with some combo of Bryant, Hachimura, Avdija and Hutchinson, if we don't go into some strange SnT options. As I said before, I don't really think any of them is salary I would really want to have. They also don't bring much cap relief for us, although 8 mil we could gave would come in handy in resigning THJ and bringing in another 20 or so mil per player. I wouldn't really want Bryant as he doesn't play defense (I would actually prefer Gafford), but let's say we really just want to get rid of KP and we accept Bertans, Hachimura, Hutchinson. Luka, Brunson THJ, Green DFS, Bertans Hachimura, Maxi Holmes, Powell I am not really impressed... (06-07-2021, 03:33 PM)DallasBasketball Wrote: How good is Bertans? Is there reason to believe he is as good or better than 2021 playoff KP? The only thing he does is shoot threes at good percentage. Even that failed him in plaoff round. No inside game, no defense. I guess way overpaid bench scorer. RE: MAVS NEWS: DAL confident in ability to resign THJ this summer - StrandedOnBeauboisHill - 06-07-2021 Vegas Odds for KP trade destinations: Boston +200 Golden State +225 OKC +300 Orlando +400 Washington +500 Chicago +600 RE: MAVS NEWS: DAL confident in ability to resign THJ this summer - loki - 06-07-2021 (06-07-2021, 03:33 PM)DallasBasketball Wrote: How good is Bertans? Is there reason to believe he is as good or better than 2021 playoff KP? He's horrible defensively, but he would immediately become the best shooter on the roster and you're not depending on him for heavy minutes anyway. That's an upgrade in my book since spot up shooting is all they want from KP. RE: MAVS NEWS: DAL confident in ability to resign THJ this summer - StrandedOnBeauboisHill - 06-07-2021 There is way too much concern with getting "value" in return for KP imo. Moving KP is a signal that we don't think we can build a championship defense around him and that we don't know how to utilize him as a second star in our offense with Luka (part Rick, but mostly KP for not knowing how to abuse smaller wing defenders because that's how Rick would have used him if he thought it was worthwhile). This isn't about getting some second star in return for KP anymore, it's about resetting the engines and admitting we went down the wrong path initially. From where I'm sitting, everyday we have 31 mil in cap tied to KP is a day we're further from contention and that should be the first thing addressed. Also, Bertans contract looks bad but we're also talking about paying Hardaway the same for the same exact skill set and it's also HALF of what we're paying KP. If our worst contract is paying an elite shooter 16 mil then I think we're in a pretty good spot to be honest. Agree with this. I used to be really high on the pick if Golden State has it to offer but I'm even souring on that. The last thing we need right now is projects. Need guys to step in immediately. RE: MAVS NEWS: DAL confident in ability to resign THJ this summer - jesusshuttlesworth82 - 06-07-2021 Can Bertans replace THJ production as flame thrower 3pt shooter? Then we could maybe flip Avdija.
