He's not the answer to anything really other than the PG on the 12-15 part of the roster. Agree verbatim. IF Dangelo Russell plays well like a couple years ago and IF Exum stays healthy, then the Mavs might be over .500 around the trade deadline, waiting on Kyrie for a playoff run. If those things don't happen, I think we are telling Kyrie to extend his rehab and playing for that 2026 draft pick. What complicates matters is both your SGs Klay and Christie need a good playmaking PG next to them. They offer little dribble penetration or playmaking. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - KillerLeft - 07-09-2025 (07-09-2025, 08:53 AM)mvossman Wrote: I think his shooting will be ok. He has improved every season and the free throw shooting is good. It will be low volume, but that is ok for a guy that will generally have the ball in his hands. I remember thinking then, during that series, that he was a negative mostly because he was in a situation where he didn't have the ball. I remember thinking he was a PG almost exclusively, and was totally out of place being asked to play off ball. I wasn't surprised when they traded him, but had a feeling he might thrive in a situation where he was allowed to play PG. The $30 million part...yeah, I'm with you and Gump on that, especially right now. But, he doesn't have that deal yet. When I commented on Razz's deal (which I was conflicted about) I was commenting more about player for player value, rather than player for player salary, which I know has to be part of (maybe most of) the thinking. It's probably a long shot that Giddey is ever worth that cap percentage, I agree. On the other hand, the skill I think will always be crucial in sports is identifying the guy who's not currently viewed as a star but could potentially thrive in a star situation. I don't feel strongly that Giddey can be a guy like that, but I don't feel as strongly as some that he can't. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - mvossman - 07-09-2025 (07-09-2025, 09:58 AM)DanSchwartzgan Wrote: I think calling Flagg a PG is overstating things. He's a wing/forward who will be charged with some creation responsibility. We have plenty of examples of this around the league...many of which are on All NBA teams and none of which are called PG's except maybe Luka. Agree with all of this. I think Max is a little like Josh Green in that he is better surrounded by good players, and he is the most likely one to end up as 5th starter in the finishing lineup. I still think they will probably need to upgrade that spot to become a legit contender, but a big Max leap would be huge. I agree with every word of your excellent post, except for maybe the sentence above. I think off-ball shooting and offensive creation will be such a need for this team that I'd say there's a decent chance those two play quite a bit together. Both are good on and off ball. Kyrie, especially, has been very good off ball since coming here. I assume your hangup with it is defense, but I think there could be situations wherein the good outweighs the bad with that tandem, if Russell is playing well, if Kyrie comes back strong while games still matter, etc. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - KillerLeft - 07-09-2025 (07-09-2025, 10:22 AM)RoyTarpleysGhost Wrote: That's a little bit surprising. I'm concerned how that will work out, but I'm sure they are going to try it. I have a good feeling about Russell (we'll see how wrong I am in few months), so I'm excited about his fit in a number of ways. I think Dan's main point was that a major step forward from Christie would make this whole thing work a lot easier, and I totally agree with that. He has some skill but he also has a fair amount of bonehead in him. I'm curious how its going to play out between him and Kidd. If he does revert back to two years ago, they will not be able to hold onto him. If he does revert back to two years ago, they will not be able to hold onto him. I don't have the same aversion to "bonehead" (or at least what we fans assume is bonehead) as some. I actually liked THJ's game, remember? I think Russell is like THJ, only he can handle the ball, too. To me, that's a useful player, and this time around the contract is right. I don't think they'll hold onto him whether he plays well or not. At some point, a star guard will have to be added via use of Gafford, PJW, Lively, AD...whomever they deem expendable. Kyrie at his number in years 33-36 is the part that worries me, frankly. I wonder how Presti navigates 3 max deals on top of all of his other young talent. SGA/Chet/J-Dub are going to be an expensive trio. They have two seasons before they become really expensive. At that time they will have some 65 mil to pay rest of team and stay below the second apron (lets say 2nd apron is a hard cap limit). They are paying "rest of team" over 100 mil now. Seems like it will be difficult for them to keep Hartenstein and Dort. I don't full understand the ramifications of being a repeat tax team, but something tells me OKC will want to avoid being even a tax team whenever possible. When I commented on Razz's deal (which I was conflicted about) I was commenting more about player for player value, rather than player for player salary, which I know has to be part of (maybe most of) the thinking. I think the question of how much you are paying, and how much his future salary is likely to pay, is now a MAJOR part of a player's value and desirability. And ignoring a player's impact on your cap and FINANCIAL fit is as suicidal as ignoring his oncourt fit. It's going to be a killer to your potential to win. That was my point about Giddey at 30k. So I think your "otoh" in last paragraph is minimizing an issue that really CAN'T be minimized without shooting yourself in the foot. Money matters. "We we think he might prove more useful later" as an excuse for overpaying now is just pushing yourself to a path where, when/if the player improves, you will have to pay even more later to keep him. RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - KillerLeft - 07-09-2025 (07-09-2025, 03:33 PM)F Gump Wrote: That was my point about Giddey at 30k. No argument. But "on the other hand" (lol) players who already clearly justify a huge salary can be difficult to impossible to acquire. If you think you know a guy is undervalued, or in the wrong role, or on the cusp of breaking out in a way your competition can't see just yet, "overpaying" can be a strategically genius move. Brunson comes to mind, but there are dozens of other examples I could think of. I'm not saying Giddey fits the bill, and I think I'd probably steer clear of being the one to give him the huge deal, but it wouldn't shock me if he became an All-Star on a good team where he had the ball. You just do not, under any circumstances, want to be wrong if you take a risk like that. But, if you're right...could be amazing. Who, besides Donnie Nelson, believed in Steve Nash, for example? I realize the cap rules and general economic principles of the sport are harsher now, but I think there will always be an elevated place of respect for those who take risks - the right risks - that pay off. That's why teams still do it. They believe they see something others do not. I think that after Kyrie went down and the Mavs were devoid of several other playmakers as well, Max just tried to do too much. I DO think he has the potential to dribble penetrate and make plays for himself…..we saw that on several occasions early on after he got here. We also need to remember that he’s only 22 years old. We literally just signed Ryan Nembhard who is 22 already as a rookie! Let’s the give the kid a chance. He seems like a good guy and from what I’ve heard, has a good work ethic. It is manageable while two of them are on 25% max deals. The tougher decisions come when they are eligible for 30% of the cap (or God forbid, 35% of the cap because that means they've taken a big leap). Minutes are really tight. Some players are not going to be very thrilled with their roles. I have been listening to some pods who assume Cooper gets minutes at the two...even starting at the two. I don't think I buy that now. Although, if it does happen they talk about how Klay's and Max's minutes (not even mentioning Caleb's) get crunched. I even heard one of the Mavs podcasts saying Max being out of the rotation. I think this would be bad news. As you mention, Max is a young player. I think he plays a smart game. He has upside still. I am not sure if he is going to be a top 5 player here, but I think he could potentially be a really nice high minute bench player. To bury him on the bench would be bad news imo. |
