There is no scenario in which you would want to be the team stuck with Giddey on your payroll at 30M. I'd be leery of 20, frankly.

Not a fan, huh?

Well, I'm going to remember this reply of yours and let's see if this holds true (at least for you), in a year.

On the other hand, I just don't have faith anymore in guards who can't shoot. It might work, and if he grew into it, that deal would be a steal. But, there's also a chance PJW would end up being the best player in that deal by a mile.

Small sample size, but his shot (at least his 3 ball has improved).
As for PJ, I like the dude, but if Flagg is what he is projected to be, and AD still gets time at PF, PJ is going to be an expensive non starter.

That's fine.

In my thinking, if a player isn't on a trajectory to be a game changing all star, who is one of 2 to 3 who carry your team to huge success, then he has to be in the MLE -or-so class of salary. And I just dont think Giddey is that caliber of player.

He might be the key player on a crap team. Like Grant, Bridges, etc, knocking a huge hole in your limited payroll. But to me he's not a dominant difference maker. So when he's getting max like money, your ceiling is not high enough imo.

RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - DL2RimRocker - 07-09-2025

I'd be fine with giving up PJ for Giddey if Nico would commit to a full rebuild around Flagg.

I'm afraid Nico will squander PJ for a washed up 30 something former star to fill a pressing need during the season WHEN things start to get ugly.

RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - david75090 - 07-09-2025

I like Giddey but was shocked when I saw the $30M price tag. Don't think he's worked his way into that kind of money quite yet. He would have to show me a lot more to get half that, in my opinion.

RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - myconsumerclub - 07-09-2025

Flagg I think is going to evolve into a PG with JK pushing him in that direction so I see that developing as a potential reality. If that happens and you have 5 PG's you now need to sift through to see who is a keeper and who is not, how is that thing going to play out? Assume he is a future PG and we have Irving still because he makes it back. That team reminds me of Irving with Luka except Flagg is a defender and bigger and likely a better 3 point shooter.

Now you have the same center rotation Lively and Gafford plus PJ and AD to play around that backcourt.

To me that possibility could evolve and force us to look at things a lot differently.

Those guys then are your higher minute guys.

But we still have 5 PG's have Irving, DLo, Exum, Nembhard and Brandon. What if Nembhard is a savant at getting the ball to guys in scoring position and shooting the 3 you keep him and get him a contract right so then who goes?

All of these guys can hit the 3 over 40% when they get in a groove even DLo did that in his past.

Even Hardy can develop into a 40% 3 point shooter.

For me you have to play the 2 way guy who turns into a defensive force to guard the other teams fast guards.

Which of our PG's is the fastest most capable defender that you would want to play next to Flagg at the point?

Exum? Or is it a SG like Klay, Max.

Are BWill and Nembhard still worth keeping as undersized PG's? Is Dlo a bad defender, is Irving still able to do a decent job on that end of the floor when he comes back?

What if Nembhard and B Will end up being better defenders than our expensive vets?

PG's are usually valuable enough that when you discover a good one on a rookie deal you can always move the vets and get back value so sooner or later we need to see what we have and make a decision and I Know that they are always going to keep Irving so your backcourt is Irving and Flagg, if Kidds vision for him turns out to be real.

Is it too much to keep Exum Dlo Nembhard and B Will as backups behind Flagg and Irving? You still have to find time for Klay and Max at the SG and both of them are better defenders to use next to Flagg.

If Flagg is then penciled in as a PG who is backing up AD and PJ? Is Cooper still going to move over and play the PF enough that it enables us to justify an arsenal of 5 PG's?

Tiering the West teams after Free Agency

I know Minny has been to two straight WCF's, but I wouldn't put them in the same tier as Houston and Denver. Actually, I think I'd put HOU and DEN in the same tier as OKC...

Tier 1
OKC
HOU
DEN

Tier 2
LAC
MIN

Tier 3
GSW
DAL
LAL
SAS
MEM
SAC
PHX
POR
NOP

Tier 4
UTAH

I would agree with this but would put OKC in tier 1 by themselves.   Houston and Denver in tier two.   Minny and LAC in tier 3.  I think both teams deserve that but won't be surprised if at least one team jumps them in the regular season.   Then I have a big tier with the rest...besides the Pelicans, PHX and Utah.    Pelicans and PHX may be a higher tier than Utah but I don't think any of those three are anything to worry about.

RE: Trade & FA 2025-26: Free Agency Starts 5pm CST/6pm EST - HoosierDaddyKid - 07-09-2025

I agree about the T-Wolves. But if you noticed, they distinctly put OKC on an island by themselves, which is justified.

That's fair. And I'm perfectly fine with OKC in a tier of their own. Just think Denver did enough to improve, after taking them to 7 games last season. And I love what HOU did this offseason, after being the 2 seed last year. I just think there's enough there to say they closed the gap a bit -- to be in the same tier is all.

Marc Stein
@TheSteinLine
The Clippers’ salary cap management has indeed opened the door to signing both Bradley Beal (conditional on a Phoenix buyout) and reuniting with Chris Paul.

The Suns and Clippers have been the two potential spots for Paul since June 29 as covered here: https://tinyurl.com/3nfhybht

*******************
I don't know how much Stein is making on his independent journey, but I just want to note a job well done. He has consistently provided real news this offseason. I think more than anyone. Shams typically is the one who releases news, but this is typically when the deal is done. He is clearly getting his info from agents. Not much intel before hand from him. Stein and Fischer have been really good with giving intel before it happens.

I think his shooting will be ok.  He has improved every season and the free throw shooting is good.  It will be low volume, but that is ok for a guy that will generally have the ball in his hands.

But I can't get over the fact that two years ago he was probably the biggest reason we beat OKC in the playoffs, and now we want to pay assets and 30 mil a year for him?  I know he was young, but I don't think he will develop into an elite creator and he is not an elite defender which means he is not worth near max.  I'm with Gump on this one.

@esidery
Pacers President of Basketball Operations Kevin Pritchard said they were willing to go deep into the luxury tax to keep Myles Turner.

However, Turner’s agent never gave Indiana the opportunity to counter the Bucks’ offer before deciding to leave.

@esidery
Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle echoed a similar sentiment on Myles Turner’s departure on
@greenlight

Carlisle believes the Bucks offered Turner his deal, but made him accept it on the spot or else they were going to pull it.

Indiana is still stunned.

The Celtics are actively attempting to find a trade for Anfernee Simons, per
@WindhorstESPN (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/brian-windhorst-the-hoop-collective/id293376147?i=1000716476363).

Simons, who was acquired from the Trail Blazers for Jrue Holiday, could net Boston some future assets.

Simons is on a $27.7 million expiring contract.

If that happens and you have 5 PG's you now need to sift through to see who is a keeper and who is not, how is that thing going to play out?

I think calling Flagg a PG is overstating things.  He's a wing/forward who will be charged with some creation responsibility.  We have plenty of examples of this around the league...many of which are on All NBA teams and none of which are called PG's except maybe Luka.

I also think it is an overstatement to say we have an "arsenal of 5 PG's".  We wouldn't give Nembhard a moments thought if he was on some other team and had a different last name.  But, because he's ours, he's suddenly a legitimate NBA prospect.  The sample is incredibly small on Williams.  3 missed 3's takes him from a .400 shooter from deep to .350.  One more miss and he's .333.  He's not the answer to anything really other than the PG on the 12-15 part of the roster.  We know exactly what Exum is.  He's a 3 & D wing who has some ability to handle the ball better than most 3 & D wings.  If you are relying on him to be your full-time starting PG, you probably have issues.  He's a rotation piece sure, but there is a limit to his upside and we have a pretty good idea what those limits are.  Availability is always a question, so he needs to be a luxury in your rotation, not something critical to your success.

I think it is an open question as to whether we get the 24/25 version of DLo or the version from the two years prior.  If the latter, then he's a really good and helpful 6th/7th man type who will be unfortunately thrust into a starting role until Kyrie comes back.  I doubt we ever see much DLo/Kyrie together except for O-for-D switches in the final seconds of a game.  Kyrie is the "PG" that matters here.  He, Flagg and AD are the locks to close games.  I think Lively or PJ will be 4th in line and the real question that needs to be answered is who is the 5th guy (and is it one of the guards you mention...including Klay or Max).  Right now our 5 best players (Kyrie, Flagg, AD, Lively and PJ) probably don't form the ideal closing lineup.  I don't think DLo or Exum have the 2-way chops to fill the role that needs to be filled and we already saw Kidd going away from Klay as a closer last season.

I think the development we need to watch for is Max Christie building on his first month here.  In his 11 games in February he played 33 minutes a game and was 14.1/4.3/3.4 and +8.8.  He shot .440 from deep.  He's a great FT shooter (important late in games) and is probably our best point-of-attack defender along with Exum.  He fell about after that, which corresponded exactly to Kyrie getting hurt.  So, is he really good when surrounded by really good players and really mediocre when forced to do too much?  We need to hope so as he's probably our best hope for filling the guard need we have.  If February was a fluke and if he doesn't progress any, then we have a hole in our lineup no matter how many small guards are on the roster.
