I'm a little surprised to see this announced, rather than just quietly decided. Same here -- hope he approaches the role enthusiastically and performs well.

Not really. It's not like the Mavs get anything different either way, and the Mavs aren't sitting around wishing that NY ends up displeased. "Gotta win the trade" long after it's over is just a fan thing for shallow bragging rights.

However, you'll be pleased to know the Mavs are almost certain to convey pick in the 20-23 range.
