Why can't Melli be the other half of our PF tandem

Melli was a huge part of the issue tonight. 0/9 from the field is not good.

He played some great defense for sure, but your value goes down exponentially if have to play 4 on 5 on the other end.

If you cannot see that EVERY stat in basketball finds its context in the swirl of ten men and two teams playing a team game with all the variables that go with it, then that is very concerning.

It is so unfair that +/- has been the whipping boy of "noise" and "context" when every single stat comes with the same baggage. There is a reason we all know that there are players who put up "empty stats" and can have lots of points and rebounds, etc., but do nothing for the team actually winning the game. The reason is that all individual stats have to be interpreted within the greater team context of simple winning and losing.

So we agree some stats are individual?

+- is not an individual stat, however you want to show it. It is a result of a group of players on the floor. It is a team (or group of players) achievement assigned to specific player.

We can take analogy with rebounding. Melli collected 3 rebounds. That is individual achievement. Context of this stat within team is to take total rebounds of the team and compare it against opponent. Did team still win rebounding battle despite Melli bad individual stat? And even that doesn't bring enough information if Melli individual rebounding was actually bad or good. Team might still win the rebounding battle because other players were hustling a lot and covered for individual mistakes or lack of effort.

Group of players was responsible for that +2. Like group of players was responsible for that 46 total rebounds (or whatever rebounds were collected when Melli was on court). It says nothing about which player in this group played good or bad or if perhaps opponent had a bad stretch in this timeframe simply by missing some open shots or making some stupid mistakes. Other stats and eye test need to be taken into context to understand it.

What you did was take one team stat at face value and claim it is a proof of a player playing well (Melli was not even CLOSE to being an issue were exact words), while you disregarded all other context that might put that team stat assigned to Melli in a different light.

If plus minus is the stat that explains individual performance, than explain JRich. Despite his non existent offense and missed 9 shots, he still had way better plus minus than KP and DFS and almost same +- as Doncic and THJ. So he must have been absolutely amazing on defense to make up for his bad offense and still contribute more to team than some others, who had far better offensive performances.

I think Melli does some good things, but didn't really think he brought much value last night.   He shouldnt' be starting, especially when paired with two of Maxi, Richardson, and DFS starters, but that is where we are right now looking to plug starters.  He also needs to be able to score a little more.   I think if he was a fifth man, in a lineup with 4 other guys who can score than that is his role....especially when he is trying to regain confidence and fit in with a new team.

Our starting lineup can look ok when our glue guys hit shots, but boy does it look bad when they don't.  Most nights, I am just looking to make it to the subs when Jalen and Hardaway enter the games to provide some juice.

Melli is a nice surprise in that he was basically attained for nothing, but no ... Nicolo Melli should not be playing playing 25-30 minutes a night for a Western Conference Playoff team, like he has been the last week.

So is every single stat in basketball. Even free throws are only achieved in a TEAM context. There is no aspect of basketball where there is only one player involved, again, even free throws. But the team IS made up of individual who all contribute to what is happening on the floor. So we can look at "individual" stats, but they ALL have to be deciphered through TEAM context, just like +/-.

Nah, he’s just trying to carve out 15 to 20 minutes for Redick, and he’s experimenting to find the best way to do that.
