Sign JJB to a guaranteed deal even though he's not likely to make the final roster.
Release him after only a few days of practice.
Dallas makes a big show about how much they appreciate him.
JJB talks about how much he loves Dallas.
He signs in Milwaukee. Chats up Giannis all year about how great Dallas is.
Giannis signs in Dallas.
JJB gets a coaching gig in Dallas alongside his newly minted statue.

Now this is a grassy knoll theory that I can get behind!

Classics Mavs move...

This is exactly what I said in another thread the day JJ's signing was reported by the press. I was wrong on the timing of him becoming a coach and a lifetime Mav, but probably only in the timing. The rewarding JJ by giving him a guaranteed $2.6 million by Mark Cuban...I was spot on and no one even commented.

Mark is one loyal owner to his guys who he believes have earned it.

Good point that Devin Harris is also in line to be rewarded though he has already been given some generous salaries late in his career that only Mark would likely have paid Devin. We don't beat the Spurs in that epic 7 games series to make the finals without Devin Harris terrorizing the Spurs a little like JJ did to the Lakers in 2011.
This Reunion Rowdie says the AAC needs "Luka's Lunatics" for the Luka/KP and gang era.

Heartbreaking. I already mentioned that it was the right basketball decision but right now I want to waive Luka and KP and bring back JJB and Dirk. That´s obviously not possible so I probably will rewatch some games from the Lakers and Heat series.

“Dallas is my second home, man, (after) Puerto Rico,” he said. He paused to rub his neck with his left hand, then slid it across his face, his thumb and pointer finger stretching the corners of his mouth. When he spoke next, his voice quivered: “It’s just special, man. It’s happiest place I ever played basketball.”

Barea would answer questions for 12 more minutes, but he could have stopped there. The look in his eye and the break in his tone conveyed more than words or numbers or milestones ever could. Sometimes, the spirit of a thing says it all.

I will miss JJ.

I really want him to come back as an assistant coach, hopefully as early as next season. Team needs his presence. Would be cool if he's here when Luka wins us another ring... Wink

Although I do think we're an injury away (knock on wood) and next thing you know, JJ is back AGAIN with the Mavs.

"I wanna make sure that everybody knows I wanna play. I want to play this year out."

That's probably the main reason for the whole process of signing but then releasing him: to gather attention and give him the best chances to fulfil his wish to play this year.

Best of luck my friend!

He said @4:48 he wants to play this year, then take a break with the family  and then get back in some capacity and end up coaching at some point.

So I hope we'll see him as RC's Assistant within the next five years.

Brad's anecdote might be predicting what happens. We'll see. . .

An amazing anecdote given the context here.
Its easy to forget that Rick Carlisle was also a real player in the NBA even though not as high profile as some others.
Maybe its also the fact it was so long ago but he brings quite a bit of that experience and perspective to the table as a coach.

Maybe the most memorable foul I've ever seen in an NBA game that didn't end up the player being injured.
It epitomized how completely unstoppable JJ was during the championship series.  One of the most talented ever Lakers teams on paper, with a prime Kobe Bryant, was completely humiliated and embarrassed by Dallas and especially the little water bug guard they had zero answers for.

Hats off to JJ as not only a top class professional example of a player and person but also a incredible player particularly in Dallas and in the context of that beautifully rounded Mavs NBA Champion team.

Just want to put in my Thank You to JJ Barea.

I admit I had my doubts about him as a player early in his career. This wouldn’t surprise JJB, he was doubted by too many way too many times. But never by himself, and he represents IMO, behind dirk but next to Jet, the greatest sports figure of the Dallas Mavericks.

His heart is an inspiration, his skill a joy, his toughness a bastion to us all.

Thank you JJB. Stay ready. I know you will.

Looking at Trailblazers roster and lack of backup PG, and Terry Stotts as the coach, I can see them signing JJ Barea.
