I thought they would actually bring him to camp, I guess this gives him the chance to go somewhere he thinks he has a better chance of making a roster if he wants.  I was hoping he would make the decision himself to call it a career before shopping his services elsewhere, but not surprised that he thinks he still has some gas in the tank.

Best wishes JJ, and hope to see you back on the Mavs bench before too long.  Thank you for your service to the team and community.

His agent said before that he has few offers in Spain.
Makes sense for him tbh, he is still wants to play and might get a new experience in great country and good league while making some extra cash.
Also, I doubt he is joining Mavs coaching staff, Mavs already made their coaching staff changes, with 2 of the 3 main assistants being few years younger than Barea himself, and Devin Harris is probably still waiting for this chance.

Maybe my favorite player ever only second to Dirk himself.

While I'm disappointed at JJB's stubbornness at not being willing to join the coaching staff outright, and at the possibility of his playing elsewhere, hats off to him for all he has done for the franchise - especially his growth and spirit as a player who came in undrafted, and most of all for his quintessential contributions as one of the six core players of the championship team.

Hard to be disappointed in him wanting to continue playing.  Honestly, I expected nothing less from him.  I hope he catches on somewhere (and plays). Either way, he is an athlete that wants to go out HIS way.  For an UDFA who played 15 years, that is exactly the way it should be.  Classy move by the Mavs though - both in signing him to a guaranteed contract, and then honoring his request for his release to go try and latch on with another club instead of milking his JJ-ness during the preseason!

Thanks for your service JJB!

And thanks for not taking up a roster spot this year.

I hope that this time they do not guarantee that contract...

Shocked they actually waived Barea. He will be missed. Somewhere Mak is pouring one out.

Some of my favorite moments in Mavs history have been related to the Lakers having no answer, in the 2011 playoffs, for backup Mavs point guard, JJ "Freakin'" Barea.

Does anyone think JJB gets a spot on an NBA roster?

Sign JJB to a guaranteed deal even though he's not likely to make the final roster.
Release him after only a few days of practice.
Dallas makes a big show about how much they appreciate him.
JJB talks about how much he loves Dallas.
He signs in Milwaukee. Chats up Giannis all year about how great Dallas is.
Giannis signs in Dallas.
JJB gets a coaching gig in Dallas alongside his newly minted statue.

Well, after all you're right: this isn't impacting next free agency, so I couldn't care less.

However, if JJ doesn't make the roster, it's hard to envision Lee making it.

I think it just gives the Mavs a camp body and vet presence for training camp and preseason and may allow Lee to show teams he can still play. I'm sure both sides know he won't make the team.
