EXTENSION: Gobert signs 5yr/$205M w/ UTA | DAL "significant interest" if available
#41
I am not going to say I want him more than I would want Giannis, but I do like the idea of going into next years FA fishing with a big fish already in the net...

I really would like to see if Utah would move him for Lee, some ballast, and a couple of future picks before we get into training camp. In a perfect world, Lee and Powell with 2 firsts really reduces the cost of Gobert and ultimately the cost of the upgrade in draft capital is a price most would pay just to dump Powell (though I am not necessarily in that camp)
I believe more in the ability to complete a trade where Milwaukee gets assets rather than hoping Giannis picks us over all other teams with Cap Space AND the teams that can do a S&T. Gobert represents that process, and a heck of an insurance piece instead of empty cap space when the desirable FA's repeat the pattern.

If KP continues to have health issues, then he could be traded for Bradley Beal after we get Rudy.

Right but if he has issues then Washington may not be too keen on that deal. I would certainly entertain a KP for Beal deal though. KP is still only 25 though. I like what KP brings to the table.

It feels to me that the signing of Derrick Favors is UTA preparing for the possibility of life without Gobert.

Gobert would be a great consolation prize.  It's hard to believe he couldn't be made to fit in a Mavs lineup.

Makes sense. I think Celtics would benefit more from Gobert than Jazz would at this stage. With Gobert expiring though it lowers his value.

"This is a terrible idea."

Substituting Giannis for Gobert likely makes the team more versatile, but I can't see how Gobert/Porzingis/DFS/Doncic/Richardson is not a strong starting 5.  Please point out the weaknesses.

23s of Gobert playing drop coverage won´t change the fact that he was exposed in the playoffs. In 2018 and 2019 the Rockets forced Snyder to limit his minutes because Gobert couldn´t defend the 5-out pick and roll. It was the same this year. Jokic was 22/46 from 3 in 7 games against the Jazz. He doubled his volume on +16% from 3 compared to the regular season. Gobert cannot defend the perimeter. Be it on switches against guards or against stretch 5s.
The Mavs already have one max contract bigman that cannot really defend in space. Playing two of them together would require a magical new coaching scheme. Otherwise guys like Harden, Lillard or Curry will drop 50+ on the Mavs.

We have seen Goberts impact in the regular season. Based on the impact metrics he has clearly been the best defender in the last few years. Problem is that the impact did not translate to the playoffs. And that´s because Gobert can be targeted on defense (just like any other big that lacks mobility, I would argue that Gobert is quicker than guys like Embiid or BroLo). To make things worse he also lacks the offensive skill set to punish opposing teams when they go small.

Theoretically, the weakness would be playing two guys together who can't cover someone on the perimeter would be disastrous against offenses where 4 guys can shoot. Some folks think Rudy could make it work. Others point out that Rudy as the one big has gotten run off the court before in the playoffs,.

Since it probably won't be tried here, feel free to pick your side without fear if being proven wrong.

Here's my take...  non-shooting centers are one of the least expensive players now days.  It isn't that Gobert isn't good... its that he isn't 8x better than, say, WCS.  Maxing a non-shooting/non-playmaking C is a very bad team building method in today's NBA.  I am not saying to not pick up a rim-running defensive ace... just do it for the MLE rather than 30% of your cap and use the balance on perimeter players that can shoot and defend where the game is played at!

It will be interesting to see what conventional C's like Gobert and Drummond get in the open market this coming offseason.  Even C's that could shoot a bit (like Ibaka) didn't get over MLE money.

We need lockdown perimeter players instead of getting a 2nd Center eating up 1/3 of your available CAP and half your money tied up at the center position with 2 players who would get torched having to defend a perimeter player......

IMO a stupid waste of CAP space...that kind of money should be spent on a player who plays a position of need not the same as your second star plays..
