No reputations for tactical, Xs and Os brilliance that I could see. What happened to Igor? He.was known as that type of coach. This staff has really done a lousy job with a roster that’s better than many think. The Mavs will do themselves a disservice if they go into next season without realizing that the coaching is a big problem. Even if Kidd stays, they need to bring in a top assistant with skins on the wall known for his work on the chalkboard, a Dell Harris type.
I may be wrong, but it seems to me that Kidd is surrounding himself with people that don't represent a danger to him. Always a sign of weak leadership. Sweeney is the only guy that has some reputation as an assistant coach. The rest are either career specialists (Armstrong, Shammgod, Patton) or inexpirienced developing coaches (Toliver, St.Jean, Dudley). Interesting enough, Marko Milic is not even listed on Mavs site. And lets be honest, he is there only because Luka aranged a job for him. His only qualification is that he was a player.
All big coaches (Pop, Carlisle,...) developed a number of assistants that became head coaches. Kidd doesn't have a long tenure in the league so we can't really fully judge if he is able to develop. Sweeney is his constant that has been with him in both previous adventures (BKN, Milwaukee). I don't think any of his assistants from BKN or Milwaukee made it to become a head coach.
