Trade & FA 2023-24: Stein-Ingram Trade Inevitable| LAL Want Lebron Back On Any Terms

There’s not much of a trade market for Deandre Ayton, per
@wojespn
on
@ryenarussillo’s podcast

“I think the hard part for Phoenix right now is Deandre Ayton’s market is lean. They have to be prepared they’ll have Deandre Ayton back. … They have to prepare for the very likely possibility (Ayton stays). They’ve gone through the marketplace, and I don’t think there’s an obvious deal for Deandre Ayton out there.”

Since the Suns matched the Pacers’ max offer sheet last summer, Ayton also has veto power over any potential deal until July 15.

Could Phx actually trade Paul and Shamet for Beal?  Why would the Bullets do that?  It would take an opt-in of Paul's contract, I'm assuming.

So, what would the Phx payroll look like at that point?

Seems super sketchy for both teams.  If Phx could come up with a couple of draft picks, maybe I could see it from WAS perspective.

From the reports we are hearing, the trade value of Beal is not looking that strong at all. MIA thinks they can do the deal without Herro? PHX is talking about Paul as the headliner (a player they had planned to waive)?

Is it reduced production, years of losing on his watch, age, or leeriness about the chance of being stuck with the massive contract? Or lack of bidders?

Does the new CBA have teams really slicing value when the pay is huge? I wonder if one factor in newer trade evaluations for GMs is "percentage of $170M hard cap" and weighing it against the amount of production the player offers for that percentage.

The most key word in that statement (not report) is “could”. They also “could” eat ice cream for dessert. They “could” get into talks about the weather, or whose fans are better.

You’ve been talking about that formula for years. I was fully bought into it when you first talked about it!

Here is the thing about all the Mavs&Hawks talk, that should scare the living crap out of you.

Hawks offer #15 + Collins for #10 + Bertans
Mavs counter with #15 + Capela for #10 + Bertans

...next two steps...

Hawks counter with #15 + Capela for #10 + THJ

.....Cuban vetoes the trade and suggest keeping THJ for win now purposes, so....

Mavs counter offer #10 + Bertans for Capela.

Hawks agree. Pick gone completely.

Just getting caught up with all of this…two questions:

1) Did I read correctly, a few pages back, that Kuminga is available?

2) If so, why hasn’t that topic dominated this space for the past 50 posts or so? That guy is EXACTLY the type of player needed here.

I also think Capella has become underrated around here. Players like him can’t really be effective in situations as dysfunctional as what the Hawks have rolled out the past two years. My bet is that he’s got 3-4 years of elite defensive center play left in him if he lands on the right team. If he does, and that team isn’t the Mavs, we’ll all want him later and the price will never again be this low.

Except that trade is not legal before the draft...

Pretty sure that's what they thought about McGee, as well!

Wow, step away for a little while and the world goes crazy.  Massive deals being discussed around the league.  Seems clear teams are trying to set their strategy in June for the direction they want to take for the next few years.

The biggest players don’t seem afraid of spending (at least in 23-24).  But, they want to move on from unproductive players to do so (Lowry and Paul).  The 3-star format does not appear to be dead yet, but a team probably has to be willing to spend right up to the second apron year in and year out if that is the plan (as contemplated in the Wood You Consider thread).

So, our trade down efforts seem to be focused on Capela and Ayton (or maybe we jump into the Beal thing because he’s so cheap).  I’m not sure how Bojan or Hield rumors fit though.  Turner appears to be out and so far there hasn’t been any legitimate buzz about Allen or Claxton.  The rumor I was kind of waiting for is Draymond, but it seems like GS would prefer to move on from Kuminga and Poole and run it back with their five starters and some depth.

Personally, I’m happy with either Capela or Ayton depending on the package.  It appears Bertans and Reggie have some value as expiring deals that help teams clear cap room (none of this is a surprise as we’ve been discussing it for weeks).  Either center plus Luka/Irving/Green gives you plenty of offense plus paint D and one perimeter defender.  Maxi and Hardy probably anchor the bench.  If this is the direction we go, it feels like we need one more starter level guy who is kind of a cross between Maxi and Green.  Maybe that guy is someone we draft (presumably with our trade down pick) or maybe that guy is part of a big package where we don’t have a pick (or end up with some second rounders).  I’m not particularly in or out on any of this yet as you have to see the impact of anything they do up and down the entire roster.  This week should be fascinating.

Salary matching is hard when it comes to GSW. Based on the rumors, GSW is most probably trying to attach Kuminga as the sweetener for either moving up in the draft or eating Poole's contract.

But who knows? Perhaps FGump is correct positing that teams may be cutting value from trades if the contract is bad enough. Poole is one of those contracts. Given that, a really Mav centric trade could be: Bertans+Bullock+10 for Poole+Kuminga+19. It's similar to some of the Hawk trades we've been throwing around. Moving 9 spots is a big deal. Same with eating Poole's contract.

I haven’t checked your math, but if we could add Jovic to Dallas, I’ve be all over this.  Is Gafford enough to move down 8 spots?  If not, then Jovic bridges the gap for me.  Gives you a starting C, a developmental four and you use 18 on the best wing defender left available in the draft.

Is it bad that I’d rather do that deal without including Poole and Bertans?

Here's another idea

Mavs
send: McGee, THJ & #10
receive: Kendrich Williams, Capela & #15

OKC
send: Williams & #12
receive: McGee & #10

Hawks
send: Capela & #15
receive: THJ & #12

Hawks get back shooting, take steps toward helping their cap and move up 3 spots
OKC gets Hendricks, Black or whoever they are targeting and deal from depth of position.
Mavs get their center, a solid cost controled wing who can shoot and defend without trading out of the first.

I just wonder if this is enough for OKC.  I guess they would have to really want someone who fell to 10.

Not at all. Poole's contract is horrific and Bertans is basically an expiring w/some cost.

But I think without Poole there is not much skin in the game for the Warriors. Sure #10 has value, but the Warriors need more than just a lotto pick. If they are truly going to retain Green, Poole almost has to be gone. Kuminga is the 1 young player with any value of theirs.

Thus I think Poole+Kuminga will have to be packaged together (and also why we haven't heard anything since that rumor because no team wants to eat Poole's contract)

To be fair, Scotto has routinely been wrong. So much so he's been known as ScottNO, as in if you read a rumor from him odds are it's not correct at all.

Still something to think about though.

I dont know how to feel about Grant Williams. Is he a young PJ Tucker? He seemed to get clowned on a regular basis last season.
