Green was on a lottery team with one of the worst defenses in the NBA. Its really hard to compare them with on/off given the context. What we do know is that Williams played at a high level in two deep playoff runs while Green disappeared in the one playoff run he was in. I expect him to be better in the future, but if we are talking about "deserves" I would argue that Williams has shown more so far and to pay them the same would be to some degree banking on Green's potential.
All that being said, I'm all for getting a deal with Green done now and if that means a little more than Williams I could probably live with that.
You're probably right about on/off. I'll concede that.
I definitely think we'd be betting on Green's potential to improve. Not many players in the NBA have improved more over the past 2 years. He's gone from looking like a bust to a good rotation player. He's become a good defender and increased his 3-point percentage from 16% to over 40% over the past 2 years. That's extraordinary. Some continued improvement (he's only 22) should make him an above average starter eventually. He's a great fit here on the court and seems like a high-character guy.
The important thing is that we extend him for two reasons. One is to not repeat the Brunson mistake. The other is for Mark Cuban to demonstrate he's willing to make the financial commitment to contend. He talks about that but hasn't actually spent the money since the championship.
