What if he is clearly the second best player, and either he walks in free agency (seems extremely likely to me if he isn't a complete bust) or we fail to get something of significant value for him in trade at the TDL? Does that mean the next two seasons are lost?
Wood seems to me a perfect storm of mid-term future disappointment for Mavs fans. I hope I'm wrong, but I think it would be a small miracle if I was. Recent history suggests that he will greatly help the team the first two thirds of the season, the Mavs will keep him for their playoff run because they believe the trade return will be insufficient (since they can't negotiate trades worth a damn), then they won't be willing to pay him market value next summer, and he will walk.
I find it very unlikely that they will sign him to a simple extension. If he's good enough that the Mavs want to do that, he'll want to bet on himself and seek more in free agency. JB all over again. Once again, it will be a small miracle if I'm wrong on any level.
