I think GS decision will be fascinating. Maybe it has already been made. They are not the same team without Draymond. It is tough to replace what he brings. It is such a unique skill. On the other hand, is it prudent to pay huge tax dollars to bring him back/resign him? Regardless if GS loses to Sacramento or somehow comes back, they are going to have an interesting offseason. Plus, isn't their GM a free agent as well?
The Steph era has three more seasons at $52mm, $56mm and $60mm. He'll be 38 at the end.
GS is already in a position that they can't bring back DiVincenzo if he opts out because of the new second apron rule. They are at $211mm or $31mm over next season. They are still over if they lose Green for zero returning salary. Thompson is free next summer. He's good, but is he really worth something in the mid-$40 million range? Poole is certainly not worth what he got. Some of these salaries they've given out aren't going to age well.
The new CBA is a killer if they try to bring back the band through the Curry era. It feels like they probably need to start taking a stand on some of these guys pretty soon. Green is their most impactful On Court and On Minus Off player. Is that the guy they really want to take a stand on? And how do they get value if they don't return salary? As I mentioned yesterday, there are more ways to benefit from Kyrie to Houston than just opening cap space. He could generate a massive TPE and that could be a way for GS to move Green for value. If there is any team that should be interested in the Mav's 2027 pick, it would be the post Curry Warriors.
Assuming Kyrie stays, GS could also do a deal for players if we send out about $22mm. This assumes Green opts in with the expectation of being extended by his new team later. Is there some combination of stuff here that lets them fill holes for something better than Vet Mins? I could see value in Maxi and Reggie, but that combo is a Josh Green salary away from matching the number needed for Draymond Green.
