Oh, and it wasn't just a little more money. The NY contract would have cost Dallas almost $100mm this season alone. People saying "If THJ is worth $19mm, then surely" is a false dichotomy. One bad contract (now unmovable) doesn't justify a second bad one. Brunson at $130mm in his DALLAS ROLE would have been a bad contract. Letting him go for nothing was a really bad move, but the mistake was not trading him the summer or at the TDL. Once it got to July, we had no control over the outcome.
I still think the clear answer at that point was to use the 2022 first rounder to dump salary.
We instead traded it for someone who most likely won't be re-signing with us next summer
