None of us 'know' if even that would have worked. I think Dallas clearly mishandled the Brunson situation, but the mistake was letting it get to the summer and assuming they could get something back from NY in a S&T. We simply have no idea if throwing more money at this would have worked. NY offered family and a team Brunson could call his own. That was never going to happen here.
Oh, and it wasn't just a little more money. The NY contract would have cost Dallas almost $100mm this season alone. People saying "If THJ is worth $19mm, then surely" is a false dichotomy. One bad contract (now unmovable) doesn't justify a second bad one. Brunson at $130mm in his DALLAS ROLE would have been a bad contract. Letting him go for nothing was a really bad move, but the mistake was not trading him the summer or at the TDL. Once it got to July, we had no control over the outcome.
