Payroll is part of it. But "no offense" - where he gets played off the floor in the playoffs - is why he's the expendable one, rather than someone else. His minutes were much lower in the playoffs which is what matters.
In the postseason this year, he never made more than 1 shot in any game. No free throws. In today's NBA playoffs, that is a huge problem. It was like playing 4 on 5 for the Sixers, allowing easy double teams on Embiid and others who key their offense. And their assessment was that they might as well move on and get something while they can, since he'll be a FA in a year.
