I agree Cuban generally doesn't seem to care about picks. But in this case, I don't think it was part of the "why."
Adding protections (where the 2029 pick would wait to be conveyed to the following year, if's in the top ___) was impossible, not allowed by rules. The Mavs were not making a choice.
The choice to use 2029 pick, rather than 2027, that was theirs -- but if they had traded 2027 protected, then they would have no picks to offer in a needed follow-up trade. And by trading 2029 "unprotected," it did add appeal, because BKN thinks "whoa, what if" rather than thinking the Mavs are going to send them a low 1st that they won't even get for 6 more years.
I know there are plenty of naysayers with legit reasons to doubt Kyrie. But given his talent (which is neither in dispute, nor in decline -- this is a superstar in his prime), we may look back in a few years and think that sending only a single 1st for Kyrie, and one that wasn't even usable on bringing in another talent for half a decade, was an incredible steal.
