GAME 67: DAL (34-33) vs. NOP (32-34) | 106-112 loss

Spent some time checking out the Mavs coaching staff. Looked like a collection of effort coaches. No gravitas.  No reputations for tactical, Xs and Os brilliance that I could see. What happened to Igor?  He.was known as that type of coach. This staff has really done a lousy job with a roster that’s better than many think. The Mavs will do themselves a disservice if they go into next season without realizing that the coaching is a big problem. Even if Kidd stays, they need to bring in a top assistant with skins on the wall known for his work on the chalkboard, a Dell Harris type.

I may be wrong, but it seems to me that Kidd is surrounding himself with people that don't represent a danger to him. Always a sign of weak leadership. Sweeney is the only guy that has some reputation as an assistant coach. The rest are either career specialists (Armstrong, Shammgod, Patton) or inexpirienced developing coaches (Toliver, St.Jean, Dudley). Interesting enough, Marko Milic is not even listed on Mavs site. And lets be honest, he is there only because Luka aranged a job for him. His only qualification is that he was a player.

All big coaches (Pop, Carlisle,...) developed a number of assistants that became head coaches. Kidd doesn't have a long tenure in the league so we can't really fully judge if he is able to develop. Sweeney is his constant that has been with him in both previous adventures (BKN, Milwaukee). I don't think any of his assistants from BKN or Milwaukee made it to become a head coach.

That's a good point. Kidd's assistants have always been light in the resume.

The only notable ones I could find during his tenures in MIL and BRK are Lawrence Frank, former head coach that had been in the league for years, and Joe Prunty,  another long time assistant coach for many teams and eventually replaced Kidd as interim HC when he was fired on MIL.

Igor was a great hire, and he left for a better shot at a HC position in BRK. It's pretty apparent they're missing him right now and it's puzzling they didn't try and replace him in the summer.

Kidd has had a reputation of being power hungry in his previous spots.  I dont think he brings in an established assistant that might outshine him.

Kidd and Lawrence Frank had the big drama in Brooklyn.
