Letting him walk for nothing isn't smart either. But, continuing the mistake isn't the right thing to do. The time to fix this was previously. Now is the time to let the mistake from the previous regime be corrected.
They would likely need to give him 5/$125 or higher to keep him at this point. He wants an opportunity to run a team as a starter. As of today, this is a mistake of the past. Don't overpay to try and save face. That's my point. There is a good chance he wouldn't have come back at all after having a chance to run a team as a starter. Those opportunities don't come up often. Generally, PGs take them when they can.
I look for Dragic to come to Dallas now. Luka will be happy and Brunson will be happy. I'm happy for Brunson. I have a feeling that he would have ended up coming off the bench again in Dallas. You can only have so many starting PGs.
The issue it is not as simple as saying we made a mistake then and let’s not make one now. This is a terrible loss that sets us back. This becomes even worse when Luka realizes his championship timeline has taken a hit and the team has lost their 2nd best guy who defenses had to worry about. You are minimizing how difficult it is to fin a player of JB caliber, warts and all.
