BRUNSON BURNER: to NYK for 4yrs/$104M (no SnT) | NYK docked 2025 2nd for tampering
I came to this thread to ask whether Brunson is worth max money. I see a couple of posters have already done so.

But is he worth $30m a year? I would have never guessed that he could carry a team like he has. And your legend is made during the playoffs

The only reason why I'm even coming close to considering it is that he's stepping up when it matters most and is doing so in dominating fashion.

If Brunson comes back next year and averages 20ppg, isn't that exactly what we want from a number 2? Lets say they throw 5 years 148 mil at him. At 26 mil a year, him averaging 20+ppg is right in line with guys like CJ McCollum, Jamal Murray, Kyle Lowry, and just a tad bit more expensive than Mike Conley.

That's right in line with this kind of production. The only way it backfires is if JB regresses and never improves. The fact that he's improved every year and his personality seems like he's the kind of guy that wants to win a lot makes me think it's a good investment.

After his regular season, I was fully okay throwing him 5 yrs/ 110 mil (22 mil a year median salary). At this point what's the extra 6 mil a year on average going to do? This team will never have cap space after Luka signed his max. So it just makes sense to make JB happy and invest into him.

That's max money worthy easily.

Jalen needs to score 30 consistently in the playoffs when playing with Luka. Then you can pay him max. What can he do when he doesn't dominate the ball?

We need to pump the breaks. Let's see what happens the rest of the playoffs. If he helps lead Dallas to a Championship then pay the man. But right now he is still an undersized guard who isn't great at defense. I could see his ceiling being Chris Paul. But the odds of that are still like 5%.

I don't agree actually. I think Brunson's ability to shrink his game playing next to Luka while still being effective makes him a unicorn. How many guys in the league can go from averaging 17ppg to 32 a night when called upon and then go right back to averaging 17 because it's what the team needs?

When you got Luka Doncic, we don't need Brunson to score anything more than 17-20 a night on efficient shooting. But his ability to step up in the absence of Doncic consistently and make sure the team doesn't skip a beat is why he'd be worth close to the max.

I am most surprised how Utah is not trying to attack Brunson on defense. I thought they will be posting Bogi against him

I think I vastly overrated Snyder after Clarkson's 6th man of the year campaign.

Agree. Utah has far superior offensive players on the paper, yet they are totally unable to dictate their own style.

How does a guy who "struggles against length" continue to be one of the league's ELITE finishers?

maybe we trust our armchair evaluations a little too much

But scheme is a big deal too. Seemed to me like those offensive players for Utah shined when they played small. And when they play big Dallas has unlimited open shots. Also, Utah's "superior" offensive players don't appear to be great pnr players, yet they play with a pnr center. Lastly, they rely on shooting 3s, and our defensive scheme of running them off of 3s is bothering them.

I think we should think beyond the 30 points.

Brunson does something we would have trouble trading for. He breaks down a team by getting to the basket in the lane - essentially making this Mavs offense effective. In a nutshell, he can do what Donic does by creating an inside-outside game.

It's hard to replicate what Brunson can do for an overall Mavs offense. And it's hard to imagine the Mavs team offense getting an adequate return on a sign-and-trade.

Jalen started all year, played 32 mpg, and was 3rd on the team in mpg.

i would be furious if they don´t pay him accordingly. 20-25 per year should be managebale. the hell, i would even pay him more. this guy is so gritty and moving fearless to the basket. and he is a really good shooter. he is not the tallest, but you can´t teach guts and killer instinct. jalen got both. a real steal in the draft. love it, big fan Smile

Kammrath Wrote: Wrote:No one is "trying to get rid of him"....what we are wanting is the Mavs to upgrade their roster in any way possible.

I think there are too many scenarios (playoffs in particular) where JB's size is going to be a detriment on both ends and he won't be in the closing five. I want the Mavs to invest on upgrading their closing five. It is my opinion that JB isn't the best for that in the long term. Just my opinion, that is all.

I respect your opinion and obviously don’t agree. Maybe one day you’ll see what I see in Brunson. The dude has “it”. Improved every year. I’ll admit I root for the undersized, hard working guy to succeed in the NBA and I’ve been wrong before (I liked the initial KP trade) but I think JB is a winning player on a winning team.

@"Kammrath" Can we get you over to the other side now?!

I loved when they asked Kidd about if he was worried about JB not coming back from his injury.  Kidd said no,  JB is tough.  That is what I have been saying for years.   Love me tough players.    Can't put a price on that!

I am half way there. He has proven me wrong in half of what I want to see. I need to see one more series against better perimeter defense to come all the way over.
