THT was my train but we should compare DFS cards.  I lay my first one down.

DFS is my favorite current Mav.

I don't know if I can match that, but here's mine:

DFS is one of my top 5 all-time favorite Mavs.

I'd put Dirk, Tyson and JJ ahead of him.  DFS at 4.

I have a DFS card. Before Killer found his way back to us, and before DFS became a bonified starter,  at the beginning of Luka's second season, I told everyone that DFS's shot was about to arrive for real and that he was in the starting lineup for the upcoming season. I got ridiculed of course. But I didn't care. Why? Because love.

Go.check the tape.

Hmmm...even though I was first, I might have to tip my cap to you, good sir.

I have Dirk, TY, JET and Luka ahead of him.

It's good you guys weren't goofing me.  DFS is a really good kid and easy to cheer for.  I love underdogs.

Let's all get on the Hunt bandwagon together.

Jet said LeBron was his favorite teammate.  I've got him behind Gatling now.

If you weren't married, I'd say she's a keeper.

I would SO rock the indie DFS jersey before I'd go with the mainstream Luka. That's a good call. Lets people know you're real.

Pretty pathetic move. Especially being the first one. Mediocrity for life. Bullock could get the THJ role easily as a 6th man. New FO, same old shitty moves.

THJ is good and he has been very good for Dallas in his role.   Now would I have wanted his re-signing highlighting our free agent haul?  Nope.  But having a guy who takes tough shots a lot of times and still shoots near 40% is important.   We got several guys who appear good at hitting open threes and they should get looks with Luka.   Hardaway can do that as well but can also make contested shots.   We don't have many guys who can do this.

I voted C.  Not really worried about if it is a slight over pay or not, but just what his salary re-singing limited the rest of our moves (so far)

I mean, I'm a THJ hater so don't take me too seriously. His deal was actually fair. The problem to me is the timing. I'm fine with keeping him (not really) at that price, but the point is we didn't get significantly better at any starter position when we deperately need a talent upgrade to compete. He shouldn't have been a priority. Voted C to his deal, but Offseason is a D.

Rumor has it that Detroit wanted him badly, and he probably wouldn't have been around for much longer.

Also, every time I experience one of these free agency periods I become more and more aware that the teams are negotiating with ALL their targets simultaneously. So, the order of how the deals are announced can be misleading. Maybe there were 5-6 scenarios they wanted that didn't include THJ, but that they were all "no's." I get that they announced this one like right after the bell, but it's pretty clear that the Mavs did more overt tampering than usual. I think most of us welcome that change.

I haven't looked it up, but I am curious to know:
  • The percentage of THJ when going for a contested shot.
  • How many shots he has taken with a defender within 3 feet of him and does he make 'em on a good clip.
  • How many are wide open shots.
  • What percentage of THJ's game are spot-up catch and shoot, how many are attacks to the basket, how many are pull-up 2s
  • How effective THJ is with Luka and how is he without him
  • Is THJ really is your above average scorer or did he just become a 3 point specialist under Luka's supreme gravity
  • Is THJ really heads and shoulders above Bullock who will likely thrive on open shots? How about Sterling Brown who also has decent handles and also able to attack the basket with a somewhat open lane?
We all know, Luka would find open guys and get them the ball, that's great and all, but it kinda' nullifies the strength of a good jump shooter knowing he can just hoist it at his spot rather than a position closer to the basket that would require a bit of dribbling and creativity to get a shot up. And THJ does not have the advance handles to constantly beat his man to spots.

If THJ is relegated to a "catch and shoot 3s" kinda' wing, then there is less distinction he has from Bullock, DFS and Brown, at least in offense.

Am I just old or is this simply recency bias?  No Blackman, Harper, Finley, or even Harris?  Obviously this is all subjective, but I don't get the huge amount of love throw at DFS on this board.  I like him, but lots of Mavs I'd put above him.

[*]

In tight coverage (2-4 feet for the defender), THJ shot 35.7% from three last year. He shot 1.6 of those per game.

He shot 4.0 open threes per game, making 40.6%. He shot 1.9 wide open threes per game, making 38.8%.

He shot 5.3 catch and shoot threes per game, making 40.9%. He shot 2.2 pull up threes per game, making 34.4%. He shot 2.2 pull up twos per game, making 40.5%.

He averaged 3.9 drives per game (Luka was 20.3, JB was 8.9, JR was 6.3).
