Love hearing from Nico in this interview about how Christian Wood was not brought in to stand at the three point line, but to be a pick and roll threat with Luka that can punish the smaller player that switches onto him.

I have been BEGGING for Luka to get a pick and roll partner and I am SUPER excited to see it unlock the offense.

Yes, I think we're in lock step on this. If they can get Wood to play the role that Porzingis should've been playing here (a good mix of skills that involve multiple scoring levels but starting as a screener very frequently) then this should be a massively helpful addition.

Looks like Jalen, josh and Dwight were at a wedding in California (I assume maxi was there too but nothing on Instagram).  It looks
Like a wedding for Sekou Lewis.  It looks like
He is the general councilFor the mavs

I liked Nico's responses when asked about knowing about the top of the draft, his intel board being very accurate on draft picks. the fact he admitted he knew about KI prior to news reports and my favorite was him just saying, I know lots of guys in the league.  I think Nico's ear to the ground connections may yet work out for him and us.  Kinda like Sherlock Holmes and his irregulars.  We can hope anyway.

Didn't we have a starting center that was a pick and roll partner with Luka?  I'm not sure it unlocked the offense, especially in the playoffs.  I like Wood's offensive versatility and the P&R is part of that, but I don't really think that is the key element to his offensive game.

I think they key thing here is that Wood isn't just a roll guy. He's a legitimate 3-level scorer, he scored efficiently even on a horrible team as the #1 option with no real PGs. Powell couldn't even dream of doing that. If the other team knows you have multiple ways to kill them, it's much harder to defend the roll threat.

That was basically my point.  I don't think of Wood as roll man.  I think of him as a versatile offensive player and roll man is one of his tools in the kit.  Its that variety of offense that makes him valuable.

While yes on both accounts (we had another pnr partner, and his versatility is certainly a big part of his game), Wood is at another level.  His athleticism is at a higher level than Dwight's, as is his aggression.  The one thing that I want to see is his screen setting.  Dwight was pretty good at that and has a good connection with our PG's, particularly the timing.  He was very good at sensing re-picks as well.  That is the "dirty work" of the gig, and I hope that Wood embraces that.  After that, everything he does, whether roll or pop, he can do at a level we will enjoy!  Going to be fun on that end.  Still hoping he can bring it on D better than he has previously.

No we didn't. We had a lob finisher specialist in DP. If a smaller player switches on DP and you don't get the immediate lob then the defense is fine. Nico is suggesting that CW is somebody that can punish that smaller player on the switch, scoring in many more ways than DP.

Excellent point.  Something that none of our recent previous C iterations could do efficiently. Offense around the basket.

I don't disagree with what Nico is saying.  I think you are using a very broad term for "pick and roll partner".  We have had a lot of guys in that role historically and I don't remember any of them having an offensive game to punish smaller players.  If you had said "I have been waiting for the Mavs to get a Pick and Roll partner that can punish smaller players" then I would have agreed.

Of course technically Luka has had pick and roll partners....shoot even JB has been a pick and roll partner with him. When I have been asking for a pick and roll partner, I have essentially been asking for a "star" pick and roll player, a player with the talent, expertise, and skill to open up the offense in that role. I hoped KP was that...he was NOT. I am hopeful CW is that.

I am anxious to really watch Wood.  But I am probably most interested in watching play the pick and roll with Luka.   He looks great in the highlights but for him and Luka to be a lethal duo there will need to be a lot more.  What I mean by that is the things that don't show up in the stat sheet.    Powell with his limitations knows how to do these things.   Can Wood?   With Wood, there will be more options.  Rim running and pick and pop being the main ones.   Knowing when to do what will be important because Luka is going to expect Wood to see what he is stilling on the court.  Many times it will be a split second reaction.   It will be difference between a good option vs a lethal one.

KP and Luka PNR was lethal in the bubble. KP wasn't fully healthy the year after that so we weren't really running that and KP didn't really like running it even though that was where he was most effective. It would be nice to get Luka a real PNR roller and that's one of the areas that most excites me about Wood

I vividly remember KP hitting a high percentage of his shots in the bubble, and generally being a difference maker on offense.

I don't remember much of that offense being generated as a two-man game partner with Luka, honestly. I think he was just jacking up the same shots he did the entire next two seasons, only he was hot at the time.
