Not sure why anyone is talking about anything other than Kyle Lowry now. The Dallas Mavericks have opened up cap space for the big fish with the big ass - 2019 NBA champion, 6-time NBA All-Star, and the greatest Raptor of all time. You are in denial if you are thinking of other plans.

While my working assumption is that Lowry is the top name, I do find this move sorta interesting in terms of roster management. Because not having JRich to include in a trade actually makes it harder to acquire Lowry via S&T in order to stay over the cap to keep THJ. I suspect more moves may be in the future. Perhaps to clear even more space to divide between THJ and Lowry. Or maybe a bigger deal involving Powell and Kleber in a S&T for Lowry after they split their cash between THJ and a guy like Holmes.
Of course, Lowry could be headed elsewhere and this could be a move to prep space for a collection of other moves and signings. Should be an interesting few days.

Idc what the metrics are. Derozan was the best player on those Toronto Raptor teams with Lowry; I'd still take him now over Lowry and it ain't even close.
People forget Lowry was a heavy playoff choker too before Kawhi arrived.

When both played together
Playoff on/off
13/14 Lowry +10.4 DeRozan -6.6
14/15 Lowry +15.4 DeRozan -7.9
15/16 Lowry +24.8 DeRozan -4.8
16/17 Lowry +8.9 DeRozan -13.1
17/18 Lowry +2.4 DeRozan -19.9
I can see one playoff chocker and we aren´t talking about a small sample size. Basically all prime seasons for both. DeRozan is one of the worst high volume shooters in playoff history. 50.3% TS for his career. Add his terrible defense and the resulting +/- numbers aren´t a suprise.

No interest in Lowry. Just the lesser evil compared to DeRozan. I think Lowry would help the team this season. But the contract length and salary could really hurt the Mavs in the following seasons.
DeRozan is one of my worst case scenarios. Mavs already have a bad defense and add one of the worst defenders in the league. Really don´t want to see the results.

If we're talking about backup plans to Lowry, give me Reggie Jackson over DDR any day of the week. Cheaper, younger, better. A proven secondary playmaker and off-ball shooter who won't hurt you in a switching defense.

As much as I'd love those signings, I don't see them pursuing Holmes with KP still on board.

Welcome! This has all been just a big ploy to get you to finally post something!
I'm amazed though. You weren't lulled out of your sleepy sleep by signing 2 starting PFs with the same name to play with our star PF, nor by letting Nash walk.
You weren't riled up by Miami in 6, Nellie and the Dubs owning Avery and Dirk, or by Roddy B watching the Spurs beat us from the bench.
You weren't stirred enough to speak up when 41 thumped all the best the NBA could offer up in the most magical championship run in the history of athletic competition, nor when our heartless owner stole the soul of the team as soon as Dirk finished singing We Are The Champions.
You didint say hi or offer a shoulder to cry on when we all suffered through the DAJ rejection, Chandler Parsons photo shoots and Rondo v Rick.
You didn't celebrate with us when Vince made the 3, Dirk said farewell or when Luka came to make things right.
None of that brought you out of your shell...but Kyle Lowry did.
Well, glad you're here. It's about time!

People aren't listening to me on the Lowry or bust argument. Here's the rundown on the top free agents (from Hoopshype):
Kawhi - staying with the Clipps.
CP3 - staying with the Suns.
Conley - staying with the Jazz.
Collins - staying with the Hawks.
Jarrett Allen - staying with the Cavs.
DDR - do not want.
Lonzo - does not want the Mavs, or they don't want him.
N. Powell - does not make a whole lot of sense if we're going to flush money down the toilet on our 6th man.
Dinwiddie - set to go to Washington, if I read correctly.
D. Rose - do not want.
Duncan Robinson - not sure how available he is.
Schroeder - aw hell no.
Holmes - Yes, please, but I agree with Loki in that I don't see him and KP fitting together.
Oladipo - No.
Nunn - Looks to be staying with the Celtics.
Ibaka - Probably not leaving the Clipps, don't much want.
Drummond - No.
Lauri - Sure, at the right place *if* KP is gone.
Portis - Yes, please.
Barton - He broken.
Oubre - Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Fournier - Sure, but doesn't fit great if we're keeping THJ, and certainly not at his asking price.
McConnell - Sure, but not for big money.
McDermott - Not enough D.
Trent - Staying with the Raps.
Hart - meh
Reggie - yes, please.
Graham - sure, if the price is right.
THT - would make one poster damn happy.
Griffin - Lulz no.
Olynyk - Sure, at the right price.
Payne - Ditto
Batum - Ditto
Noel - Ditto
Caruso - Ditto
I think it's pretty clear that our first choice pivot if Lowry spurns us is DDR, whom I'm out on again - he will make us worse overall. I think the Mavs could come up with a pretty decent offseason targeting the second tier of free agents, but no, two major problems stand in the way - 1) Their quixotic desire to prioritize retention of a sixth man, and 2) Not taking whatever they can possibly get for KP. Get rid of KP for a deal that opens up more room for us, let THJ walk, shed D. Powell and Maxi, and then go get Holmes, Portis, and Powell. Then at least the starting lineup is decent.

It would be easy to say the Mavs have plenty of bigs and they don't need another one.
But can't deny there's an issue with the Mavs bigman rotation.
The only scoring big in the group would rather shoot 3s, with doubtful durability and can't punish smaller players. And let's not even talk about defense.
IMHO, either DP or Maxi, or both would be on the move.
And one big will be coming in.
Mavs can go relatively cheaper with Noel to address the defense, or they get have the Luka-Richaun show.

Oh, there definitely is!
Unfortunately, fixing it would either require moving a max-contract player to another team or planting his ass on the bench. If they really are planning on running him back one more year to try to make it work (to be fair, there is a chance this is successful, no matter how slim I believe it to be) then I just don't see them getting another big at north of the MLE.
