There were discussions going on out there that had more players involved than the ones who were actually moved. How could you possibly know who was discussed? If you don’t, how could you say this?
I’ll give 2 rumored names that I would add JB in a trade for, Brogdon and Collins. Do you know those weren’t in play in those discussions? Was the cost of Collins both JB AND Maxi, and that was too much for our FO? Do you know? I don’t. Unless you have a sure insider knowledge of the conversations that actually happened, how can you say others don’t have a clue?

The problem with trading Brunson came down to salary filler. By himself he can't return much more than a mid-1st rookie contract, so to get to the Lowry/Aaron Gordon level player Dallas had to fill in the salaries - Now for Rick, Brunson + Powell might not be a trade worth making unless it brought in a MAJOR upgrade; and you have a difficult time figuring out trade matches because Lowry would require like 3 contracts from Dallas (IF Brunson was involved)

If we look at what the Mavs said and did, it was clear they were hesitant to do a major change to their rotation. JJ was a guy they got for basically nothing and Fournier would have been additive had the Mavs landed him.
We saw interest in Collins who would have been a major upgrade and perhaps worth the disruption to this season it would have cause. So maybe Brunson was on the table, maybe he wasn't but I am leaning more towards the latter knowing that most deals that could happen at the TDL would be available in some way, shape or form this off-season. Mavs will have more leverage then because teams like ATL know that Mavs have other deals they can make.
At any rate I don't believe Mavs have some unrealistic view of Brunson. I do believe he would be on the table for a major move (ie Collins or Brogdon level player). I am not sure it would take that but we will see. I would love to not have to trade Brunson bc I love his fit here.

Because apparently they don't, if they took what was reported and think it means the Mavs were declining to talk about Brunson no matter who might have ever been offered. It just wouldn't work that way.
Teams talk to teams every day. In fact, basically EVERY team is checking in with EVERY team - that's the nature of the business. In those conversations, they are taking the temperature on every team's desire and willingness to move players. Without limit. That's how the game is played.
That wording means the Mavs were not soliciting offers for Brunson, and apparently no one was being shopped that interested the Mavs enough to consider making Brunson available. BUT everything is relative.

The Knicks, Lakers situations are interesting to me and I think they will indirectly affect the Mavs.
Schroder is intriguing because ordinarily he would be a guy you think is going to stay with the Lakers. It's LA, they are competing for championships and he is a starter.
The Knicks though can just offer him a huge deal that is hard to match.
Classic Knicks targets seem like:
- Schroder big deal
- Drummond on a short deal
- Dipo maybe on a short deal?
- At least one RFA overpay to try to steal someone away (ie Lonzo)
They might be able to do all of the above even. The Knicks could also take on money in a trade situation. We have seen that they don't necessarily care a lot ab fit altho they absolutely will want a very good PG.
My concern as a DR fan is that they find themselves at his door-step if the Schroder deal falls-through.

I'd love to have Lonzo but my guess is he wants to go to a glamorous market.

I like Lonzo a lot. I'm still a little weary of giving him the max. He may also just go elsewhere to have the ball in his hands more.

If that's the case it's really dumb that the Pels didn't trade him at the TDL.

Doubt he'll get max offers or a job as the primary ball handler - he hasn't shown the NBA-level skills for that. He's certainly intriguing as a sign-and-trade target.

I'm sure they got offers and probably just didn't like the offers. They can still do a sign and trade, no?

If I'm Lonzo and I got similar offers from Dallas and New York, I'd probably go to New York as I'd have more opportunities to have the ball in my hand. Luka's ball dominance might worry me, especially if I'm trying to build towards my next contract.

And NYK has lots of dollars to throw at him as well.

Am I the only one just a little bit antsy signing Lonzo at a 20mm annual offer sheet for 4 years?
The dude has been balling out and has carved himself a nice niche as a spot up shooter/defender. But I feel Lonzo is also the type of guy to just stop giving a crap as soon as he gets a payday.
Just a passing thought I had.
