My informed guess is that Donnie, Carlisle and the player/personnel side has very little interest in the marketing side, and that the marketing guys aren’t really given access to much of their thinking.

Interesting! I had already conceded that Powell would be the starter when KP is back but I am going to retract that until we actually see it. Powell would look really good with Maxi in that second unit.

5. Porter will be traded at the deadline
Forty-two games for Porter doesn’t sound so bad now, huh?
The Bulls have been scheduled to play 37 games in the first half of the season, which takes them through March 3. The trading deadline is March 25. So 42 sounds about right, assuming a few nights off for rest or minor bumps and bruises here and there.
The right deal for Porter could be tricky to find thanks to his $28 million contract. Even with it set to expire at season’s end, most teams (save any with massive trade exceptions) will have to match that money, which means relinquishing a starter — not happening — or multiple players (it’s complicated).
I’ll save trade scenarios for a future column, but with Williams in the fold, and given the way the Bulls already are flirting with moving Porter to the bench, a deadline trade wouldn’t come as a surprise no matter how complex it may be. And with the 2021 free-agent class drying up, it could be a chance for Karnišovas to take back additional salary beyond the 2020-21 season.

Seems like MBT prioritses room over JRich when they apparently didn't even try to find a deal...

RFA: Isaac, Kennard, Collins, Anunoby, White, Hart, Trent, Robinson
Update on the list.

Totally expected. Why jump into a deal now? Both sides get to see how it will go and then have better grounds to negotiate. I am sure Mavs will have no problem showing the money if JRich performs as expected.
If he doesn't want to be here, we have no control whatsoever.

I hope it’s Richardson that didn’t want to extend. Mavs would be stupid not to extend him at 4/$72 right now.

White gone now also.
JRich can only get a 20% raise on the extension. So, deal starting at $13.9mm. If he bets on himself and loses he just takes the $11.6mm he’s guaranteed next year. But, if he bets on himself and wins, the benefit could be pretty big for him.
BTW, this doesn’t preclude an in-season extension. Richardson would would simply opt out of next season (which was the presumption anyway). Today’s deadline was for players with more than this season remaining.

They may have tried, but they can only offer 120% of his current salary in an extension. Both sides know he's worth much more than that, so it would have been a very short conversation.

I think a lot of players were spooked by the pandemic and decided that guaranteed money is the best option right now

Well that makes sense. No way he’d sign for $13.9 + 5% raises.

What are you trying to say? That they rather took discounted deals than bet on themselves? With perhaps the exception of Isaac, all deals are huge. Fultz got 50 mil for 3 years, Kennard got 64 for 4 years, OG got 72 mil for 4 years,... None of them could have a realistic hope to get a much better deal next year.
It is the owners who are locking their guys rather than risk free agency. Like tax doesn't matter. Clippers will be deep in tax, Orlando has 125 guaranteed salary already with 12 players under contract (looks like Fournier will be gone).

He's a salary match for Johnson
BTW, that Kennard deal is the floor for THJ and JRich. The path to improvement will be some kind of Johnson Plus deal and bring back THJ and JRich (unless THJ is the Plus...which I doubt).

I know I guess his price will not be huge and he would be a great 6th man for us. So why not (for example) Johnson+Brunson or Johnson+2027 FRP.
Another interesting option for a bit overpaid player who can play would be Rozier, another salary match for Johnson. I assume Charlotte will want to move Ball in the starting five soon. Than they basically have to decide between Rozier or Graham.
