BTW I agree with and support the idea of coming under the tax line to avoid the repeater tax. Hopefully the Mavs will blow past it next year though.

Apparently, Stein also said no team has offered Wood more than the minimum. Can someone confirm?

We live in the New Orleans area so I follow the Pelicans as well. Valanciunas really declined last season compared to the previous. He can provide some scoring and can hit an occasional open 3-pointer. He is a really strong defensive rebounder. You would assume he'd be a good screener given his size but he gets at least one illegal screen called against him per game.
He's become a big liability on defense and I'm surprised the Pelicans haven't addressed the deficiency. I think they would have drafted Lively if the Mavericks didn't. Jonas is slow footed and can't guard the perimeter. When smaller players are switched onto him, they walk right by him. He doesn't really protect the rim either. His defensive metrics are bad. He is a strong defensive rebounder though and would help in that area. He was more effective two seasons ago. Especially offensively.
I think he's a poor fit with the Mavericks and I think Dwight Powell is a better player.
He's probably better than Richaun Holmes though. If that's the trade, it's good for the Mavericks. I can't imagine the Pelicans would accept that swap as Holmes brings another year of bad salary.

I can't confirm it but I think it's surprising. If that's the case, I wish we'd bring him back for just over the minimum. There's a lot talent there. Maybe a little continuity could help him on defense.

Not if he is a locker room issue. It might be addition by subtraction in that case.

About the Mavs' lack of activity for the last day: while reports say POR will match the Mavs' offer to Thybulle, it has not been done. His salary remains on the Mavs official cap sheet until the match is formally made. For now, the Blazers can change their mind.

So the Mavs don't know their actual cap/apron situation to work with, until that MT issue is resolved. In the meantime, they (and we) simply wait.
Deadline is 11PM CDT. If the Blazers do nothing, MT becomes a Mav. I expect he will be matched, but ya never know.

MFFL: FWIW, I have the same number as FG at $162mm and some change. It is fairly easy to take the Spotrac number and add in Prosper and Lively. Can’t speak for CBAMavs. Bear in mind we don’t know the exact numbers for GWill, Kyrie and Seth yet.
Killer: Confirm, he said that about Wood and nothing more than the minimum. You should send Stein a little money from all that you are saving by not having cable .
I hope JV isn’t the answer to our center question.

SurfpuckMD…what are your thoughts about Zion? Still some hope there for Pell fans, or are people starting to give up on him? Which would you say is more likely to be moved, Zion or Ingrim?

To amend my earlier post, if THJ is indeed going to be outgoing, the Mavs have to be looking for help at the wing as well as center, because here's where they are, with a real shortage of SG-SF sized wings:
PG - Kyrie, Hardy, Curry [all are small, and PG-ish on the floor]
SG - Luka, Exum
SF - THJ, Green
PF - GW, Maxi, Prosper
C - Holmes, Lively, Powell, McGee
I see
Holmes Lively
Maxi
Williams
Omax
Luka
Exum
Green
Hardy
Kyrie Curry
Exum would be taking over Timmy spot (prolly not a great tradeoff). We really wanted THybulle there, which would have made a ton of sense.

Agreed, but for some reason I first read this as Jeff Vangundy, who we know is currently looking for work. I am EXTREMELY doubtful that he could fill the hole.

So maybe not all hope is lost on MT. Can’t they just accept a 2nd rounder in a wink wink second transaction for future considerations in return for not matching? No salary match would be required then.

That's crazy. I've never seen anything like that before. New CBA?

Sorry, if that purports to be from the new CBA, FG posted a link to all 676 or so pages. I’m not planning to go looking for that. I’ve always heard (or maybe read in the FAQ) that this wasn’t possible. If it is a new CBA ‘fix’, I’ve not seen any publicity on it.
Time will be up fairly soon.

pg331 of new CBA. So we might be able to salvage the deal after all.

As one of the league's smallest markets, New Orleans can only acquire superstars through the draft. CJ McCollum wanted to be traded here but that's about the highest caliber player we'll ever get through free agency or trade request. Zion is an MVP talent when he's healthy and just a thrill to watch so I can't imagine they'll trade him for at least the next 2 years. He's frustrating because he doesn't take conditioning seriously but when he's on the court, he's just awesome. I think he's the most exceptional athlete in the NBA. Honestly, he's an even better player than I anticipated he would be. In addition to the speed, power and agility, he's a really capable and willing passer. He's surprisingly smart on the court. Any hope of the Pelicans competing for a championship in the next 3 years rests upon his shoulders.
I think Ingram is a good player as well but nowhere near Zion's level. He missed a lot of games this season for questionable injuries and doesn't really bother playing much defense. He was great in the playoffs against Phoenix 2 years ago. I hoped that was the player he would become permanently. He just doesn't seem to have the same intensity though during the regular season. He rarely drives to the rim and usually settles on taking contested 17-foot jumpers- which he hits at a good rate. He's a good player and his greatest appeal is that he seems to like being a New Orleans Pelican. A lot the young players here seem to have a really strong bond. They've created a family atmosphere with Willie Green as the coach and CJ McCollum as the fun uncle and it's a really likeable team even when they're not super competitive.
I think it's unlikely they'll trade either player unless the player requests a trade. As NBA players have more control over their destination, I think the Pelicans realize we should keep what we get.

Portland front office may get so drunk tonight after watching scoot that they may forget to sign the offer tonight.
I am not watching the game but seems like he looks good
