Plus it doesn't hurt that he is a fantastic offensive player.
I'd rather invest in Bojan than throw a contract at Kelly Oubre. If we thought THJ was bad, how does 7 3PA a game on 31.5% shooting sound?
Bojan will be expensive both in assets and cap, is not a particularly good defender and is 34. He does not seem like the direction this team is going. Don't see the fit with Williams and Luka. The starting lineup needs a center, a point of attack defender (Green) and a plus defender at the 4.
Agree on lack of interest for Oubre. Would be more interested in Jones Jr.

Good lord, I hate posting from my phone. Autocorrect is not my friend. Takes me longer to edit these things than it does to write them. I guess I need to proofread before posting, but I’m just too damn lazy.

Hasn’t played much for two years, actually, and yes, the kings literally launched their first round pick into the sun to get his money off of their books. The prize of that trade was Omax - anything you get from Holmes is a bonus. He might fit better in Dallas than he did in Sacramento, that’s very possible. I think it is kind of unreasonable to expect him to start and play 20 minutes per game. I think a more reasonable expectation is for him to play about as much as Mcgee did last year, hopefully helping a little bit more than Mcgee did.
And, I think you are showing your ass with that Powell hyperbole. The Mavericks were better last year when Powell was on the court than they were when he was not. He is still a very good pick and roll partner with Luka - good to elite in that category. That might open up some options for Luka and Kyrie with a full training camp. Powell is still a guy who is going to play with maximum effort at all times. He will still run the floor every single time, far from a given today, and he’s still a pretty switchable guy.
I’m not super thrilled with their inability to improve on him, year after year, either, but you can’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.
I agree on the Powell hyperbole, but I have more hopes than you do regarding Holmes. There were many extenuating circumstances with his situation in Sacramento and I think its roughly 50/50 he can get back to what he was, which was a decent starting center.

Ok, but even if we go with the hope of that scenario, he wasn’t really much of a defender, right? I can’t really look at this from any angle without reaching the conclusion that both Kleber and Powell will be more important 5’s for this team as it’s currently constructed.

The money we have left could open up Wood SnT possibilities that weren’t there before.

I don't think it's true that the deal is not expandable. No rule requires Dallas to take Holmes into the TPE, and there could be other options involving a larger deal with 3rd team. It does make it more complicated to package Holmes with other players for a trade-up in salary, though.
In any case, I imagine we'll see shortly how it all works out.

I don't know if Gafford is gettable or how good of a basketball player he is, but judging from his highlights he would love playing with Luka. Also, would probably cause a rift when Lively was ready.

I guess I disagree. (not necessarily what they should do but what Kidd wants to do. I think he wants to play bigger than you are suggesting). They've been vocal about upgrading defense and rebounding and neither Holmes or Powell fits that description.
I dont think they want any of those guys as the primary center. They're trying to trade for someone.

Oh, then you don’t disagree, because I agree with all of that (depending on what you mean by “play bigger”).
I’m just talking about the lineups I have seen people float around in the event that no other center is added.

Holmes as a straight salary match for Gafford is interesting since he cant be aggregated for 60 days. Wonder if 2 2nds would be enough to get it done.

He was supposed to be a good defender. Not elite, but a quality rim protector and a decent rebounder. The advanced stats say he has been a plus defender most of his career until the small sample of last year.

Well, I’m with you on a lot of that, but Kleber played the 5 almost exclusively last year, defensively. Maybe not during all of his minutes with Powell, but certainly during his minutes with Wood. There a few instances of players referring to the importance of him being healthy because “he’s usually low man.”
I think Kidd probably sees what we all do - that he’s (currently) the best paint defender/rim protector on the team, and that the benefit of having the other team’s 5 pulled to the corner with him, out of the paint, is damn near immeasurable.
I think they’re done hoping he can hold up to more than 12-15 minutes per night, but I fail to see how changing his position is the move.
I agree that they probably want to improve on Powell as a starter for a variety of reasons, but idk…just seems like those “clear cut starter” opportunities have come and gone this summer without working out.

Ok, well then we’ll see, I guess. Personally, I’m setting my expectations lower. Even if he’s straight dead money, I feel it was a good deal because Omax is the type of guy you MUST have in today’s game. I think people are sleeping on what he’s going to do here on this first contract.
If Holmes gives them more than I’m expecting, I’ll be happy, but I’m certainly not limiting my expectations to anything remotely resembling “if Powell is the starter, this off-season was a failure.” Not saying that’s where you are, but there are people who can’t see past that.

Whether Maxi is played as a 4 or 5 he’s gonna cut into one of the rookie’s minutes (my guess is both as he’ll probably play a little bit of both). I’m fine with that for a year as a safety net to make sure the rooks are who we hope they are. Next year might be the year to move off of him to make room though (of course as long as the rooks are ready for the extra minutes). I just want him to stay healthy and help take us to the WCF again so when he is traded, we get great value.
I’m glad Powell’s contract is so much more reasonable now so we don’t have that $10M sitting on the bench at the end of games. Maxi (when healthy) is the right choice for that moment. Now, we’ll have Holmes sitting there with more salary. Oh well, Maxi and GWill (what if we end the season with GWill and OMax finishing games!) are gonna be fun to watch then. I’m starting to consider the time commitment to getting season tickets again.

Allen is the ideal fit, Mavs probably don’t have enough for him. Cavs still aren’t for sure ready to trade him anyway.
Zubac may not be truly available
three guys Dallas has gone after: Capela & Ayton (talks stalled on both) and Naz Reid (never got a chance)

I would include Green or probably even Hardy in a deal for Allen if that got it done. That kid is exactly what this team needs to move directly into contention discussion.
