The Lakers have no need for Kyrie. Their PG dominated last night. Kyrie is a free agent, so you can’t just trade him. A sign and trade might bring back a minor asset or two and a bunch of salary. Kyrie as a Mav is probably the optimal outcome for both parties right now, and then later you could make a proper trade if needed.

I’ll admit from the start that this is a bit of tin foil hat theory.
It has been reported that Brooklyn would not trade Kyrie to LA (or if they did, the price would be dramatically higher than trading him anyplace else). If Dallas was just a stopover on the way to LAL, the way to do this isn’t in free agency this summer. It is extend and trades before 7/1. Think in terms of the discussion FG and I (and others) had regarding Draymond recently.
Yes, there is a limitation on years in this scenario, but are we sure there is a contract out there for more than $84mm over two years? The reporting is Brooklyn didn’t want to fully guarantee him as his extension number. That number is now larger because of his trade kicker. Are we sure Russell will find more than $67mm over two years? I’m not sure either guy gets those numbers…especially from a contender.
So, how might this work out for Dallas?
We gave up Dinwiddie and get younger Russell
We gave up DFS and get younger Vanderbilt
We gave up 2029 and get Lakers 2029
We gave up a 2nd and get a future second from LA
It isn’t hard to make us whole (and younger). Vanderbilt is under LA control right now (as are Beasley and Bamba), so this doesn’t have to get into all of the other FA’s on the LA roster. Dallas is getting Russell and Vanderbilt for $10mm less than the Kyrie max. It fills two spots on the roster and enhances out ability to stay under the tax and use the full MLE.
As an alternative, maybe we take LA’s pick in this years draft instead of 2029 giving us more flexibility to trade for a center since Vanderbilt covers the ‘big wing who can defend’ need that we have. Maybe you draft Lively with 17 and use 10 plus 2027 for Turner and take back Indy’s early 2nd.
Turner, Lively, McGee
Vandy, Maxi
Green, THj
Russell, Bullock
Luka, Hardy
One last note…the timing of all of this is in the current season before 6/30 (or before 6/29 if Bamba or Beasley are involved). So, it avoids all of the restrictions of the new CBA.

Kyrie has value, especially to the Lakers. To me this all depends on what LeGM wants. If he wants Kyrie, we can take them to the cleaners. If he doesn't, then we are better off resigning him like you said.

I like what you outlined Dan. If that is on the table, sign me up! D. Russell gives you 75% of what Kyrie does with less drama and nagging injury. Love Vandy. Recoup pick. Use of MLE. Develop Hardy. Skew younger. What’s not to love?

I think Russel is a very bad fit next to Luka. Irving is at least elite offensively. Russel is not. It sure is better to get him than losing Kyrie for nothing. But, I wouldn't pull a SD+DFS for Russell+Vandy trade.

I don't mind Dan's proposed outline of making us "whole" should Kyrie force his way to La La Land. Although I'd be more inclined to get just a little more. Malik Beasley for instance and they take Bertans.
Just something where we can definitively say we've improved. In the above we've reset our cap, and gotten depth. But we're back to searching for a 2nd star. The issue is I think it's unrealistic to think this team can get that 2nd star with the assets they have, even if we get a 2029 Lakers 1st.
What does 2023, 2027, 2029 get you in today's market? Dejounte Murray? OG? Is that really much better than just keeping Kyrie and rolling the dice on finding a center?
Point is, while I can see the appeal of getting off the Kyrie train (and in all honesty it might be the best move), someone at his talent level does in fact raise the floor of the overall team, even if we didn't see it after the ASB.

I mean this is a fun theory but does ANYONE believe Mark Cuban is capable of something like this, vs. just trading for an aging star because he can. I think we all know the answer

Mavs and Atl need a shakeup in the worst way. Okongwu needs to finally be the undisputed starter. Collins needs a change in scenery. THJ needs a new team as does Bullock. This trade happens this season before the draft.
Atl out: Collins/Capela
Mavs out: Maxi/Bullock/THJ
Atl gets 3 quality bench players for their 2 replaced starters.
Trae/Murray/Bey/Hunter/Okongwu
Holiday/Bogdan/THJ/Bullock/Kleber
Strong group with good depth and vet presence.
Mavs get 2 of the 3 starters they need. Go into the draft knowing what they need. They trade down for Lively and an asset or 2. Could use one of those assets in the offseason along with Bertans to SnT for Dillon Brooks. I know he’s been getting beat up recently, but I really think he needs to get away from that horrible Mem culture.
Kyrie/Luka/Brooks/Collins/Capela
Hardy/Green/FA/FA/Lively
Defense, rebounding and scoring.

Problem is Collins/Capela are proven to be a terrible combination. IMO, if they're both moved, it'll be to different teams.

Newest offseason plan. Not worried about how to do it. Get Brooks, Draymond and Simmons.

Don’t care if Utah isn’t going to do this (I think it’s debatable). Would you?
Utah in: Josh Green, Bertans, Delon Wright, Mavs #10 and unprotected 27
Was in: THJ
Dal in: Markannen and Gafford
Completed during the draft so Utah can try to move up and get Scoot (they then have their bookends for the future)
Saves Was $2.6M to help ease the burden of paying Kuzma.
Saves Dal $10M (hopefully Kyrie signs at $38-40M too). Hopefully we’re comfortably in a full MLE and BAE situation.
Kyrie/Luka/MLE/Lauri/Gafford
Hardy/Bullock/Maxi with the BAE as the 9th man (I’d target a 3rd PG).

I swear, if Gafford had an OnlyFans site, we'd never see IGT again.

I’d talk about Hartenstein more except he’s playing himself into staying in NY.
Landale looks to be a good move as a backup.
We need 2 SFs, 2 PFs, 2 Cs and a 3rd PG as quickly and as cheaply as we can get them.
We have THJ, Bullock and the hope of SnTing Wood as well as 2 picks (whether or not we convey to NYK), the hope of one of the MLEs and the BAE, to make it happen before we run into Green and Hardy trade packages.

Hartenstein is a huge contributor for them. He's not going anywhere. We had our chance to get him, and didn't. When was the last time we could say the Knicks are making sound basketball decisions?

I think he has been impressive in the playoffs. Some here have been on him prior to this season. I was not one. I have been on the Josh Hart train for years though.
I can promise you, as flawed as this mavericks roster is if you just added a hart and Hartenstein to this years team with a healthy Luka, the mavs are probably still playing. Mavs need to find these guys.

To me this seems unambitious. I've gotta think Dallas has higher hopes than simply undoing the Kyrie trade with similar pieces to what we gave up. That said, I always enjoy your trade ideas because they're so well thought out.
