I’m colder than warm on him, but if the Mavs are in on him, I don’t know where else to go other than try and see the fit.
Mavs get interested in Gobert after exposing all his flaws in the playoffs.
We expose the flaws of Ayton and McGee the very next series and sign one and now have interest in the other....
What the hell are we doing here...

I don't want Ayton. I'd rather keep Wood and extend him of the two choices.

But Wood would be an expiring contract and no way to do an extend-and-trade where it's at a salary and years he is expecting. I'm sure there would be other issues too, making it hard to find a win-win.
Do you invest big money in a center, like Ayton's salary, in today's NBA?
We showed in that seven game series it's easy to neutralize Ayton. I thought he was going to punish us. He should have.
IMO, Ayton has a buyer beware quality about him, perhaps more so with his 7' 250lbs body. He's dinosaur-ish.

Some of these rumors make me hope we get involved if for no other reason than to up the eventual acquiring teams’ cost.

It is just conflicting information thrown out there by competing parties.
ATL wants him to be worth picks. ATL wants people to think they will hold on to him as a threat to raise the price. But other teams are in conversation with ATL and they know the truth.

Ayton wasn't exposed in that series. It was CP3.
The Suns were rolling and up on the Mavs. The Mavs then ran full court pressure and doubled Paul the rest of the series and tired him out. Neutralizing Paul neutralized the entire Suns offense.
By then it was easy for them to pick the Suns apart.
If anything, all that series showed is that Ayton requires a good PG to set him up. Thankfully we have one of those...

Are you implying that Chris Paul isn't a good enough PG to get value out of his big men?
After our last win over Phoenix where he simply got bullied away from the rim by a MUCH smaller Mavs defense I have totally given up hope on Ayton. That game had nothing to do with PG play and everything to do with his lack of ability to enforce his will on smaller defenders which is basically the whole point of having a player like that. If he was getting paid 10 mil? Sure. But dedicating that much money to a big man who doesn't seem to want to be a big man is going to lead you to the same spot we were in when we were paying that much to KP.

They can have the very useful Davis Bertans and Tim Hardaway Jr. for him.

Add to the confusion that Ainge is in the media saying he’d WANT picks to take Collins.

Luka-GTJ-Green-DFS-Wood with Dinwiddie-THJ-Kleber-Holmes coming off the bench.
I’m not a huge fan of GTJ here (not violently opposed either). I’m also not a fan of being held hostage by Klutch. But, wanted to comment that this seems to be a well balanced trade.

I agree on the balancing of this one. I do think GJT is a solid 3rd guard as he can play next to Luka or Dinwiddie. Certainly would be an improvement if he took all the THJ minutes. (Assume THJ is gone if he was perused) Overall, an AAV close to $20 isint a bad value going forward. Higher than that and I’d have no interest.

If we know CWood isint signing an extension, would we do Bullock and CWood for JC? That return certainly qualifies.

Ayton went 15pts, 8rbs, 0.4blks in 26 minutes. Not exactly a franchise foundation performance.

I would rather keep the Bullock powder dry. Wood, maybe. The whole point is that Collins is overpaid. We could use a guy like him as our #4 guy, say, in the event that the Mavs don't want to keep Wood. Collins is a hot potato. If you can use Atlanta's interest in getting rid of him, and his low value, as leverage to dump Bertans and/or THJ (BTW, those two together don't work for Collins, but THJ and Frank, or Bertans and McGee - yes, please - do work), then that's a golden opportunity. I certainly wouldn't tip them with a first in either of those deals, but a second or two might be okay - and then you can make a more favorable trade for Wood and/or Bullock, and keep SD (stop your sobbing, Kamm) and DFS for the home-run deal this summer.
