Young teams windows for contention is much longer than teams that aren't young, giving you more bites at the cherry. Unless you are in LA and have the pull for all the best FA every year. So depends whether you want to play the long game, or go all in for maybe one or two shots, being screwed if you don't take those opportunities.

Plus...Luka is so good...if you play the long game...Luka could turn this into a freaking dynasty.
I just dont agree with the rigid "vets trump all other approaches" stance. Luka is young. So young you shouldnt be wasting draft assets on scrubs.

I want to play the long game.
Win now and then win again.
Give me very good two-way players.
If they are done in 3 years give me new ones.

Hmmm…you’d have to pair something with Wood. Maybe Frank? They actually reported that Wood was sick in Detroit but he played through it so not sure if the two are connected.
Hardaway for both of them fits though. Would be really weird for that Rose rumor to be true and for us to make a move for him right after Kemba. I could see why they may want Reddish though (although he seems pretty undisciplined for my tastes based on the little I’ve seen).

Wood will walk in FA. The writing is on the walls. He won’t re-sign here bc of the tension between him and Kidd but otoh the Mavs won’t dump him at the trade deadline.
And his value is even worse now than it was last summer.
It’s all set up perfectly for the next asset management desaster. We know how this stuff works in DAL.

How do you intend to get that done with the current payroll, roster and draft pick situation?

I can't see us being a target for Rose, unless it was a buyout. He has a club option next year, so I would be surprised at a buyout. At 14 million or so, I wouldn't think we would have anything remotely interesting for the Knicks. At the beginning of the season there was talk how Rose lost weight and I thought he looked great in the few early games I saw. Since then, it looks like he has really struggled.
Same thing for Reddish. I wouldn't think we would have an attractive offer for him. Plus, he would probably have hard time getting consistent minutes here....if he deserved them is another question. He is an interesting gamble though. Depending on when you see him, he can look good or brutal. Seeing how he has worn out his welcome at two places is a bit concerning. Although an interesting gamble in Free agency....he is still really young. The Knicks team is weird. Reddish, like Mitchell Robinson, can look great at times. But the more you watch them you wonder if they are winning players.

Coincidence that Wood is missing games too?
Mavs Film Room is making a pretty big leap there. There are 28 other possibilities if there is a trade coming. Plus, Thibs benched Fournier a few weeks ago and it didn't foretell a trade.
With Reddish also a healthy scratch, Grimes played 40 minutes yesterday. Seems NY needs a SF if they aren't going to play Fournier and plan to trade Reddish. The best SF candidates Dallas has are both former Knicks...been there done that. Also, Wood joining a crowded front court with Randle, Toppin, Robinson, Hartenstein and Sims on the roster doesn't make sense. Seems like some big or bigs would need to go. But, other than Sims, none of those guys sat yesterday. Doesn't that kill the healthy scratch theory?
Could Wood play center next to Randle and give them much needed spacing (or better, come off the bench next to Toppin)?. Robinson can't be traded until January. Hartenstein, who would be a dream here, is 10 days from being trade-eligible. Could you do something along the lines of:
Wood/Bullock/(Could send another contract, but don't have to as NY has NG guys who can be cut)
for
Hartenstein/Rose/Reddish?
IH Powell McGee
DFS Maxi Bertans
THJ Reddish Pinson
SD Green Hardy
Luka Rose Frank
Do we have to add something to that? Unprotect our pick? A young player? Wood/Bullock for IH/Rose seems fair straight up. NY paid a first for Reddish and there is some upside there. Seems we'd need to add something for the Reddish part of this.

Oh yeah, for sure. My post was tongue in cheek. Sorry if I didn't make that obvious enough. I promise I'm not an idiot!

Something I find interesting about what I constructed is it could have been the bones of what we ‘might’ have discussed around a Brunson S&T. I always thought Rose would be the core of any such deal. Adding Cam makes the money work on a non-declining deal for Brunson. I always thought Hartenstein made a ton of sense here, but CAA got him just a hair more money than Dallas could pay (which would make the McGee/Hardy split of the TP MLE a fallback position).
Who knows whether that was discussed or where it fell apart if it was discussed. NY had the leverage after clearing space, but recall that the Kemba deal wasn’t actually done until 7/6, Gibson wasn’t waived until 7/8 and the rest of their deals (Brunson and IH signing and the cap clearing trade with Detroit) weren’t finalized until 7/11 and 7/12. So, there was stuff going on behind the scenes. Now, NY predictably needs shooting and the Kidd/Wood marriage doesn’t appear destined to last. 10 days seems like a long time to pretend Wood has a cold though.

I would do this deal, for sure, since we're talking about it.

I would be open to this as a fallback....but for the love of God, please try to get John Collins first!

If it required unprotecting our first would you do it?
If it required including Hardy (instead of unprotecting our first) would you do it?

I hate to say it, because I see Wood trying, but he's so often lost on defense that I worry about the mental aspect of his game even more than his slow feet. I think he would average exactly zero minutes per game for Thibs.

That's a good point, actually.
Regardless of where you are on the Wood spectrum, I bet we can all agree he's not a Thibs type of guy.

Actually, on second thought...I really want that pick to convey this year, and I don't think they'll get one of the top two picks. I still think the most likely outcome is somewhere between the 6th and 10th (play in) spots.
I might be ok with unprotecting the first to get it done because I don't see that as much risk. Still a hard no on Hardy, however.
