I just have a feeling that the group as a whole didn't believe enough to pay Knick money for JB. There are just a lot of pieces we don't have info for.
I feel like the mistake was made a year ago. This is just the fallout of that. They should have either put him on a 4/$55 contract when they had the chance or traded him at the deadline.
I don't need people to dislike Cuban.
I don't need people to be sad Brunson is leaving - some people are ok with this because they didn't think highly of the player, which is fine, and others are just better at keeping the team's activities on a lower level of import in their lives than I. That's also fine.
What's bothering me (not with you, specifically) is the refusal to acknowledge that - plainly, straight up - Dallas is about to let their 2nd best player walk immediately after the team got to the WCF. I would just hope that we could all be real about that, even if we're not going to dwell on it or be pissed, rather than search for rationalizations on why it might be a good thing.
Life will go on, and the team will still be good. I don't think they'll be AS good, but that's debatable. What's not debatable is that this is NOT the outcome Dallas WANTED. It's NOT going to help them improve in the short term. It's NOT part of some plan. It's a failure. I would just like a little balance in how we deal with the facts around here, personally. Where our individual outlooks fall on the positive/negative meter regarding the future is a totally personal thing.

Letting him walk for nothing isn't smart either. But, continuing the mistake isn't the right thing to do. The time to fix this was previously. Now is the time to let the mistake from the previous regime be corrected.
They would likely need to give him 5/$125 or higher to keep him at this point. He wants an opportunity to run a team as a starter. As of today, this is a mistake of the past. Don't overpay to try and save face. That's my point. There is a good chance he wouldn't have come back at all after having a chance to run a team as a starter. Those opportunities don't come up often. Generally, PGs take them when they can.
I look for Dragic to come to Dallas now. Luka will be happy and Brunson will be happy. I'm happy for Brunson. I have a feeling that he would have ended up coming off the bench again in Dallas. You can only have so many starting PGs.
The issue it is not as simple as saying we made a mistake then and let’s not make one now. This is a terrible loss that sets us back. This becomes even worse when Luka realizes his championship timeline has taken a hit and the team has lost their 2nd best guy who defenses had to worry about. You are minimizing how difficult it is to fin a player of JB caliber, warts and all.

Everyone realizes this. I don't think anyone thinks it's a good thing. Some people are fine throwing a bank at JB and others think that's too rich of a contract. For those opposed to the contract, it doesn't mean they are rationalizing why it's a good thing. It is seemingly a spilt milk situation and everyone is just armchair GM'ing, as we are want to do, to try to turn chicken shit into chicken salad.
The sky might be falling in that we had Luka and JB on rookie deals and the best player we could put next to Luka was actually JB with your runner ups being not particularly close (Dirk on one leg, flashes of KP "greatness", Harrison Barnes). That's front office malpractice but you can only move forward.

And now I'm hungry. For my sake, I hope it was the chicken salad that triggered it.

That's fine if you think this, it's just that my reading around here over the past 24 hours has already started leading me to reach a different conclusion, and it's not even officially a done deal yet.

I think everyone here would love to have JB back. We all just have different ideas of what he is worth. It might be good that the Mavs didn't "overpay" him and it might not. Time will tell if we compounded the mistakes with JB or if we were able to make a second good decision with him instead of just one.

I've said this for years but defense at the PG position has always been overrated, it by far takes a backseat to wings/bigs. PG's in today's NBA are simply too hard to guard. You gotta fight fire with fire.
Marcus Smart, DPOY and the prototypical defensive PG; well, in the playoffs, the Celtics defended 8.4 points better with Smart OFF the court as opposed to him ON the court (99.5 vs 107.9).
Recurring theme once the Celtics lost the Finals was that they needed a PG, someone who can direct the offense. That will always take precedence over defense.
Finding elite shot creators, ball handlers, and shooters are a premium. That's what Brunson provided and they let him go for nothing. Ascending player, will turn 26 shortly.
There's no margin for error when you're trying to compete for championships. The goal is to get better, but the Mavs got worse, that's the prevailing thought. Time will tell but we've been waiting over a decade for Cuban to evolve. Same guy.

So the Knicks potentially have 5 first rounders next year? 3 have protections and hopefully the Mavs pick is somewhere in the 20's. But that gives them solid stuff to offer in trades. Especially considering next years draft has solid hype already.
Also any sign and trade where we are getting a trade exemption I am out on unless we have an immediate trade for it. I just can't deal with the talk all year of our trade exemption only to see it go unused....like most do.

These are the facts. We lost our second best player, our second best shot creator, our second best young talent, second best pick of that draft, our second most important player for reaching the WCF, for absolutely nothing. Not to mention he is young, and the worst of all is perhaps that his developmental curve is from the start of his career until now is still pointing upwards, JB has not reached his full potential far from.
This is a huge mistake. There is absolutely nothing positive in this. This is a massive step back to this franchise. Now, one cant stop at such mistake, Mavs need to continue and make the best out of this. Maybe there is some more room and cap left combined with trading THJ to get something in return and build the team. But JB was not the reason we didnt win the championship, he was our second best player at many many things.

Exactly.
The NBA doesnt allow for proper defense against shifty players or teams. You have to fight it fire with fire.
We arent going to beat GSW with defense. Gotta beat them with better offense or run into foul trouble trying to defend them.
Brunson is that shifty player thats hard to defend because hes skilled all around and can score at all 3 levels.
Bummer.

Reggie's preparing everyone for the Mavs to offer a max 5 year deal at the last minute

It would take the max + a no-trade clause to keep JB at this point - which would turn him into an untradeable cap albatross that we would all be cursing within a year or two.

We've done that before!
Just look at Chandler Parsons.

I am sorry. You do this. F Cuban for messing this up so much. He can pay the tax.
My issue is this should have already been communicated to Jalen.
