Just listened to this. The tweet is extremely misleading.
The guy basically said Dallas is trying to do anything they can with THJ's contract, so it wouldn't surprise him if they tried to get in on the Grant situation. He didn't say he'd heard they had already done so, nor did he indicate that they had any chance.
He DID speculate that Grant would probably like to play as the second option next to Luka or another star of his ilk.

Just for the Westbrook fanboys here I ran it by the ESPN Trade Machine. Hollinger says Lakers would lose the trade.

I know this is a joke, but that is a window into how useless that Hollinger evaluation is.

I don't get why the Mavs resigned him if we are so desperate to get off his contract. These reports just don't make any sense nor does moving him now, in the most expensive year of his deal, with the most years left, and while injured.

Sorry, I left out the part where he reasoned that this was due to the injury. He was compared to Rubio and Ingles, if I remember correctly. I think the idea is that they want to maximize their chances this year, if I understood correctly, not that they had buyer's remorse already (though they might).
The point I'm trying to convey is that the tweet makes it seem like there's some ongoing conversations between the Mavs and Detroit about Grant, and what Fishcer said was that they're basically trying to use the THJ contract in any way that could possibly make their team better because he's injured, so he thought they'd likely get around to trying for Grant eventually.

It would still be bad asset management. I think THJ will have decent value in year 3 & 4 of his deal. But right now he'd be nothing more than salary filler and maybe worse than that. If Detroit wants to gift us Grant, spoilers: they will not, sure but I wouldn't give up much for him. It sounds like he wants a big raise and nothing I saw from him last night screams he's worth anything more than his current contract.
Pistons were a 20 win team before him, a 20 team win with him and are headed towards an 18 win season.

Hey, email Cuban, I agree!
But, I don't expect them to get anywhere, anyway. Just trying to pass on Fisher's sentiments that they're basically just seeing what they can get for THJ, rather than hotly pursuing any of these big names. Tomorrow will be easier on us all if hopes don't get too high.

His body is a special one - that kind of length and fluidity doesn't come around often. He reminds me a bit of Lamar Odom, only maybe more athletic and better defensively, while being significantly less skilled offensively.
But yeah, I pretty much agree with the above.

Not jumping on you are the MBT really. This just seems more like the media looking for clicks. Nico should be talking to anyone but we probably shouldn't do much short of moving KP if decent value can be returned. This isn't the time to invest our limited asset pool. We are only a year-and-half away from halving a draft picks paid off and being free of Powell's contract. KP will be an expiring the following season and THJ will be a trade asset with only two years left.

Mavs using Br’er Rabbit technique. Take Tim. Tim I say. Tim’s available. Don’t ask us for Kristaps.

Not a fan of adding Grant but I do love PJ Washington as we can use a solid offensive Power Forward that has a more expansive game than Kleber.
Not to contradict myself but Grant slightly intrigues me because he fits that Shawn Marion swiss army knife combo forward and we would almost be assured of having him or DFS on the court. That is big given the team that eliminated us from the playoffs the last few seasons.
I am assuming that the person going out is THJ for Grant.
I guess time will tell but I do not have myhopes up.

Thanks for passing this on. Makes sense. If THJ is the only trade chip on the table, then I don't expect anything of significance today.
THJ alone returns someone between $16.2mm and $26.7mm. Obviously we could add salary to get to a bigger number or the other team could send two players who add up to the right number. Here is a list focusing strictly on players who can be traded one for one for THJ and have been rumored to be available:
Dinwiddie
Fournier (back to NY...probably not)
Gordon*
Dragic
Grant*
Barnes*
Gallinari
Hield
Collins*
G. Harris
* would certainly require more assets than just THJ
Current LT Teams:
Golden State
LAC
Nets
Bucks
LAL
Utah
76ers
BOS
IND (barely)
Indy is the only team among the LT payers who is also outside the play-in. Of course, we still have the TPE and could take a player into that without sending out THJ (so could several other teams as well though). I wonder what it would cost to take T. J. McConnell into the TPE since Indy now has Brogdon and Haliburton. He'd also provide some Brunson insurance.
Boston is about $2.77mm over. Besides the often discussed Schroder, Langford and Nesmith also make the right amount of money to get them under the tax. Nesmith hasn't been good as a pro and is less strategically important to Boston than Schroder. I'd pay a second to have him on our roster instead of Moses.

I hate admitting this, but I'm firmly in the "just do SOMETHING.....anything" camp. That's the irrational fan boy in me. But, if we're putting our GM hats on, I'm struggling to see a realistic move that actually makes sense for now and still keeps us cap flexible for the future.
Using the TPE on a rental may be the only move we make. But then who do we cut? Moses? Then we have to make another difficult cut to play in the buy-out market.
I know I'll be refreshing the boards every 30 seconds, but we better prepare for NOTHING to happen. And that makes my fanboy side very upset.

Yeah as long as KP stays there isn't a lot of interesting moves to speculate on
I was thinking we'd absorb Lamb into the TPE at some point but who knows what the Kings will do. They may just want to keep him
That just kind of leaves us waiting around for a Dragic buyout

A note on Dinwiddie...he and THJ work for trade matching purposes straight up. However, doing the deal like that throws Washington into the tax by $2.2mm. So, something else would have to happen in either a separate trade with another team or in this trade. Everyone probably knows that expiring Bryant and expiring fit our TPE. Rookie Kispert is also enough, combined with Dinwiddie to do the deal and keep Washington under the tax.

I am wondering if us trying to get involved with Levert, with a weak hand, means they know Dragic isn't going to wind up here?
My baseline for a good trade deadline is Dragic and using the TPE. Even if the TPE is a rental or not a great fit. I will base my grades from that. I would be satisfied as a good end if that is what we wind up with.

I am just glad that Nico is getting involved with weak players with a weak hand. The Mavs obviously have coveted assets (1sts, DFS, JB, etc), they just aren't going to use them for players that aren't actually that good (like LeVert).

Dinwiddie could be one of rare options I see as possible for THJ contract without assets. I would be fine with any throw in from their side (Harrell, Bryant, Holiday) to make the money work.
I doubt anything big is on the table for Mavs. I hope they surprise me. I hope Mavs don't spend assets for a minor move (like Ross mentioned yesterday). I think (bought out) Dragic is a far better option.

Those Dinwiddle shooting numbers are so horrendous. I hope we don't touch him.
Before Brunson's emergence as a starting level PG I would have been maybe a little more tempted but as-is that's a hard no from me.

_____
A bit under 6 hours left.
I‘d happily move on from THJr but I gotta agree with the concerns re the timing.
A) I don’t think he ever played any worse than he did before the injury
B) He signed for less money than what NO (iirc) offered just a few months ago (terrible look)
C) Assuming he returns to the level of play of the last seasons he should be more valuable later on when his salary comes down
Maybe he still has some fans around the league but I dont expect much on that front tbqh.
