My theory is that Donnie was really tired of tryin to make it work with Bob so he was done. He could see there was no light at the end of the tunnel with this situation, Cuban was going to continue to use Bob as a "co-GM" and Donnie knew it was going to fail. He may not have been one of the sources but it could have been anyone on his staff (Finley, Keith Grant, etc.)
As Cato and many in the Dallas media have noted, this power struggle has been brewing in the past though so the Mavs sources have hinted at it with the media for a while. Maybe Donnie let his staff know he was tired of it and probably ready to step down so that's when the sources said "Screw it, let's just expose everything" Their goal was to make Bob look bad and it seems to have worked because if not for this, Bob would probably have gone nowhere.
