Bad decision making, shot selection and a lack of fundamentals (no boxouts, traveling) were the biggest problems. Overall a really low IQ game from most of the guys (basically everyone not named Luka or Johnson).
It´s really telling that Green (the rookie) made the veteran plays. Two really smart fouls against Giannis. He stopped the transition attack at half court and prevented easy points.
It´s a little bit annoying that KP hasn´t learned anything from last season. I had high hopes that this time it would be easier to integrate him into the lineup but right now he is forcing it. Terrible shot selection combined with some really questionable passes. The airball with 10s left on the clock was bad but personally I think the offensive goaltending was even worse.
It was already mentioned. WCS is hit or miss. Only needed to watch the first five minutes to know that he lacked focus and energy.
Luka had the best defensive performance of his career against the Hornets. For some reason he played zero defense against the Bucks. Not even trying to stay in front of Holiday. Second half was a lot better.
Burke had a really good game but in the last two minutes his decision making was really bad. His performance was one of the reasons why the Mavs had a chance to win. Also the reason why they lost in the last two minutes.
THJ had another really good game and during a hot stretch in the 3rd quarter he carried the Mavs offense all by himself.
Johnson was by far the best option vs Giannis and had some good moments on offense. He is a solid playmaker and in the current situation it makes sense to give him the ball when Luka is on the bench but I don´t think him being one of the three main ballhandlers is a longterm solution. Defenders aren´t even trying to guard him on the perimeter and the paint is clogged. Even worse when he shares the floor with another non shooter like Iwundu or WCS.
Positive note: Even with a lot of things going wrong and bad performances from key players (not to mention the missing guys) the Mavs were able to keep up with one of the best teams in the league. Pretty sure that last year this would have been a blowout. The Mavs were down all game long but the Bucks couldn´t finish them. Give up a run. Make a comeback. Give up a run. Make a comeback. And so on.
It´s not easy to develop a winning culture but it makes a big difference.
