If the 7th and 8th seed have to risk their play-off spot against the 9-14 in a eight team single elimination tournament, then it´s only fair that the draft seedings are re-adjusted to compensate those four teams for an upset loss. That means they take the place of their opponent (in our case the Suns) and the Mavs get the 10th odds (14% top 4). If the Mavs reach the play-in tournament finals they qualify for the play-offs and can then tank the final to avoid the Clippers. So instead of getting wasted by the Clippers in round one we either get to play the Lakers or we improve our draft position by ten places. Looks like a win-win situation to me.
