There was talk yesterday of Irving 'compromising' at 3 years or doing a 2/1 with the third year a TO. Luka has three years before his PO. In the fourth year from now he can turn down the PO and start his super-max. It would make sense for Wood to be a 3/1 with the fourth being a TO. Maxi's contract runs these same 3 years.
Maybe the smart play here isn't expiring contracts, but guys with three more years left or guys who are extension eligible this summer that you can sign for two years past next season...Wiggins, Collins, Rozier, D. Robinson and any first rounder from the last draft (Jovic) qualify as the former.
It does strike me as odd that Kyrie extension news all of a sudden started throwing around 3 years max instead of 4 or 5. That'll line up directly in line with Luka's contract as you're pointing out.
Some other centers who's contracts line up with Luka's free agency:
Gafford
Nurkic
Ayton
Gobert (Player option so maybe not)
John Collins
Mitchell Robinson
Bobby Portis
