So WCS/JRich are almost certainly gone. Melli, Redick as well. Bey and Hinton will be renounced but I don't think they really matter.
So lets pencil in THJ at around 17 mil, that'd leave the Mavs with around 18 mil to play with. Who can they get for that?
Or are they going to again try and swing for the fences and aim even higher?
They can´t renounce Richardson. If you pencil in THJ at 17, we have exactly MLE capspace, assuming they waive WCS.
They´ll probably piss away another 1st round pick to get rid of Powell or Richardson. Would be another classic "short-term, no vision"-decision.

He later mentioned Richardson opts in and the Mavs try to trade him. Said he doesn't think you get a starter for him but maybe a good rotation player or a second round pick. Not sure how working under the cap works if Richardson opts in.

Here I really doubt if doing another "Wright move" is smart, unless you trade for someone serious. Wright made some sense because he had 2 years left, Richardson is expiring. He is not that bad that he can't be a rotation player. You will not get anything better without throwing assets. I will be very, very dissapointed if the move will be Richardson for DJJ or similar. Get creative and do a SnT for a serious player, even if you need to include third team to take Jrich or someone.

Cato didn't really do his cap work, or os it seems. He claims KP is untradeable, THJ should be kept, JRich will opt in and will be traded for a role player and they will (according to him) still have cap space to sign someone good. Simply not true. I have to say I am a bit dissapointed. After all the ranting about how front office didn't build around Luka, one will have to be way more creative than keep KP, sign THJ and trade JRich for a role player. I expect more from him or he doesn't deserve the right to be critical after the season...

I don’t know that we can really rely on any previous plans regarding over/under cap or THJ until we know how the Donnie replacement plays out.
If it’s some internal hire or no name, Mark is probably running the show.
If it’s Ujiri level, then big roster things will certainly happen.

I listened to Cato on the No Dunks podcasts and you could tell the guys weren´t overly impressed with his Mavs fantasy GM skills (very incoherent), but then he cracked a good joke and saved the situation. You get much better fantasy GM value here.

My working theory is that Mavs plan A is to send Maxi, J Rich as salary matching in likely a multi-team deal with Atlanta for Collins.
Now that the front office is getting turned over I am not sure you can rule out any player getting moved. I hope this new GM is really sure they want THJ.
Usually when a new front office is brought in they immediately want to make pretty significant changes. We saw Morey do the Horford dump + Curry trade.
I don't know if anyone has some other recent examples of GMs making big change. I am pretty sure they want to put their stamp on the team pretty quickly.

If it weren't for KP, THJ would be the most interesting subplot of all this.

Oh, I'd say there's one if the GM isn't a complete moron.

Figured if they're operating as under the cap it means Richardson would decline his option and WCS's option would be declined.
Signing Timmy at 17 gives the Mavs around 17 mil of cap space.

Guys I would not be penciling in anybody. I think everything is on the table except Luka.

Oh for sure. My OP was made before the Donnie ousting.
Just clarifying what I was trying to say then.

That does not reek of incompetence. Turner has been fairly injury-prone himself. Just like with Porzingis there are some red flags. He´s not the classic rim-rolling center that Carlisle knows how to use either.
Yeah Bird was there for a long time tho too. I think whoever the new basketball guy is sucks there.

Got to ask after tonight.....
Would you do KP for Simmons? I'm not sure if I would. I honestly don't know how to use a guy who won't shoot.

Of freaking course you do that if you're the Mavericks. No question about it. Hell will freeze over before the guy you talk to on Philly's end even brings it to Morey's attention. They wouldn't trade Simmons for freaking James Harden a few months ago.
How you use him? Picture the role traditionally played by Powell, Dwight, and then imagine one of the most gifted basketball IQ's in the world replacing him.

I mean I probably do because he is young and tradeable if it doesn't work out.
I might make the trade but I have 0 confidence that the trade works.

Screener, ballhandler, cutter. Problem is that the 76ers are running a high post/ellbow heavy offense for Embiid. When Embiid isos Simmons has no role on offense. Would be a different story if he plays the PF/C role.

So basically you are saying that he's not a ball handler but a center...
that's radically different that what he actually does tho.
My reaction of watching that collapse tonight is utter disgust at Simmons. How he still can't make a shot is mind blowing. Complete lack of assertiveness.

I'd happily take my chances with the Luka/Simmons pick & roll surrounded by shooters. Honestly, being on a team like Dallas with a clear alpha ballhandler might be the best thing for Simmons long term to force him to rethink his game. IMO his future is at forward.
