We need a term for the Luka Doncic & Kyrie Irving play where they just stand close to each other on the perimeter, pass it back and forth as they drift apart to make the 2 defenders choose, and then the more open one takes a three.

Sort of wish the All star break was not here. Mavs are playing well. The rest of the west midtier is playing well too. We play a hot Suns team after the all star break. Kings beat Denver last night. Pelicans won again. Lakers look like they are getting in a groove. The Warriors lost last night, but they have been playing much better too. Hopefully are injury woes are behind us, because a two weeks of a key player injury and you could really feel those missed games. Should be a fun finish.

The good side of this break is that it gives Gafford and PJ some time to work on the playbook. I hope we can come back strong after it's over.

P.J. Washington has only played 88 minutes for the Dallas Mavericks but has outscored opponents by 51 points. That's despite the Mavs shooting 29.5% from 3 during those minutes. They have shot 91-175 FG (52%) while holding opponents to 68-182 FG (37.4%) and 17-71 3P (23.9%).

Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving have shared the court on 1,399 possessions this season. On those possessions:
122.6 ORTG
113.7 DRTG
+8.9 Diff
For reference, the Celtics own the #1 ORTG at 121.8, the Pelicans own the #7 DRTG at 114, and a +8.9 differential would rank 2nd in the league, per cleaning the glass
When Luka and Kyrie are on the court together the Mavericks are the best offense in the NBA and a top 10 defense.

Just want to point out that for us to end up with the same record as last year we will have to go 6-21 post all star break and there were folks here who thought we'd do that again.

Yes, but… can they actually play together?

I was a believer that the team would go 41-41 cause I thought Jason Kidd was/is a basketball terrorist and there was no way a rookie center could lead an actual playoff hopeful.
I was as wrong as humanely possible on Lively. Maybe even more wrong than that. Kidd still kind of sucks though even if I've come around on the idea that he can keep the locker room steady.

Williams's constant yapping got him shipped out of Dallas.

I'm so curious how PJ Washington has boosted these numbers. Kyrie has been out for 22 games. Luka has been out a good chunk too. 1400 possessions seems like a lot but it's still less than 30 games worth.
So still high variance and PJ has come in and become a defensive maestro.
In any case, these numbers are about as promising as can be for this duo. I hope it translates to playoff success

Only downside is that the Mavs traded him when he finally looked like the Boston version when it comes to foot speed and mobility.

I think I was probably with you on both points and had us at 43 wins I believe in the prediction thread. Feels like we could get a handful of wins higher than that (knocks on wood).
I'm not going to lie though, I'm honestly starting to complain less and less about Kidd the past month. I don't have many issues with the rotation and the increased pace has really gotten everyone more involved (in my opinion). I think he still is bad at understanding when to use timeouts to stop the bleeding at times and figuring out a rotation before the playoffs will be interesting but I think he's done fairly well with this roster when you start to factor in all the injuries.

Yeah. He's playing well for Charlotte. That's how it usually works right?

I actually thought that he was on an upwards trajectory in his last few games as a Mav. Watching the games he just looked a little bit quicker. Less sluggish.

For the last month, Luka has been the NBA's best player.

Good article if you’re interested in Luka’s future as a Mav.

Good article if you’re interested in Luka’s future as a Mav. Good explanation for why we targeted 2027-2030 for trading picks, Luka is not giving up $100 million. He signs the max extension next summer. We have him under team control until 2030. We have until then to convince him to sign the next extension after that.
Between now and July of next year we do everything we can to improve the team to his liking. So nothing stands in the way of him signing that. If we can keep making moves and keep the 2031 FRP we will be in great shape
